10 ——— THE NEW YORK BENCH SHOW. @EOWING POPULARITY OF THE COMING DOG SHOW—SOME OF THE CELEBRATED ANIMALS ‘THAT ARE TO COMPETE FOR HONORS. To the student in capine matters, or, indeed, to the ebeerver of human nature, a visit to the office of Mr. Charles Lincoln, Superintendent of the Westminster Kennel Club, during the past few days was full of in- \erest, Here the ‘elegant” of sporting circles, who Keep kennels of setters and pointers merely tor ap oc- tasional week at snipe on the Jersey meadows or \ fortnight at ‘chickens’ on Western prairies im the fall, ore to be seen, Here was aso «the §=«‘‘workman,” balf gentleman and baif protessiona), in velveteen shooting cost, who combines profit with eport and who always bas the “best dog in the world, sir.’’ And agaip was to be teen tho fancier, keon-eyed and shrewd, with a cross- bred terrier at his heels, but atwo anda hall pound skye ipa dogs, who were awaiting their turn to enter their pugs or their terriers, or, iu many instances, dogs of the jarger breeds, fur the coveted honors. Yesterday was Abe last day for closing the home eutries, for, although foreign exhibitors have the privilege of ap eatended period (May 1), the liste may be sata to have been completed last night. ONK THOUSAND DOGS ON EXMIRITION. ‘The exact tigures cannot be given until delayed let, Vers have been received, but it is weil within bounds to say that considerably over one thousand dogs will be brought belore the judges for examivation ; and it must be borne in mind that these are all dogs of high degree, whose owners think them qualified in the necessary poimts to carry off the prizes. 1p variety they rank trom the champion setter—the acknowledged leader of bis race—to the Japavese spaniel, the Esquimaux, or tho hairless Mexican, who are classed 4s misceilancous, WENCH SNOWS IN AMERICA, lt is pow ovly four yeara since beuch shows were rst inaugurated 10 this country, At that ume a tew sportsmen of this city and vicivity suggested to the managers of the Queens County Agricultural Society, whose annual meeting te bold at Mineola, L, 1., to bold ts beach show of dogs in connection therewitn, Prob- woly lese than one huodred dogs were gotten together ‘on that Occasion, but the fever spread, and, stimulated by the demand which had sprung up tor fine dogs for heid purposes, shows of a similar nature were bela in rapid succession at Watertown, Spring- held, Chicago, Geneseo, Philadelphia, Buitimore, De- sroit and other cities, This competition led to the im- portation uf the best of the Kogiish sporting dogs, and avery large number of those red tor competition at Gilmore’s Garden in May have already achieved su cess on the bench, or in the field in Great Britain, ‘There is no more interesting fact in connection with the present show than that Mr. J. Cumming Macdona and the other eminent English sportsmen wbo accom- pany bim will meet on their arrival here the do; with whom they have been familiar and whose a scendants are still winning fame tn their owa country, THE CLASSES. Of sporting dogs there may be said to be four varie- ties—that is, of cogs used with the gun—viz., the thi varieties of setters, English, Irish and Scoich (or Got dons), and pointers, ‘he first aro subdivided into a ariety of strains, of which perhaps the most cele- brated is the “Laveracks,” the founder of which, Mr. Edward Laverack, died only afew aays since at the Tipe ugo Of eighty years, ‘This strain will be repre- sented by Pride of the Border, Guy Mannering, Young Laverack und others owned by Mr. Charles H. Ray- mond, of Morris Plains, N, J. ‘The next tu this list 1s (he Ficld Trial strum, a cross between the Laverack and what is known as the Duke-Khaebe strain, 5. HH. Smith, of Strathroy, Canada, will show, of tnese, Leicester, Paris and other dogs whose reputation ts al- reaay world wide, The nattve Enghsh will be repre- sented by Mr. Thomas Morford’s well known ‘orange aud whites,’ and ut cust a bundred otbers that It would be tedious to mention. The Red Irish will bea grand class, Firat of ali will be nobio old Plunket, the only English Field Trial winner of nis breed in Ater- ica. Rev, J. Cumming Macdona, who comes over to adge (but not in this class), was formerly owner of Nupket. Scarcely iess celepratod aro the maguiticent race, Elcho and Katnicen, owned by Mr. William Jarvis, of Claremont, N. H. "Iu tois class ulone there ‘will be 250 doy Tho Gordons will also be a splendid jot, Mr, Muno’s, Mr, Coleburn's, Dr. Fleet Speir's and a dozen other equally well known kennels aro all entered. The pomters will bo represonted by tho thampion, Sepeation, whose head now adorus half tho yoards und fences of the country, but who, as the property of the Westminster Club, will not ‘compete. Mr. SB. Dilly brings his champion, Ranger, from far-off Minnesota, and the oid ce Jand strainy, tracing duck @ dozen generations, will bo rong delegation. ST. BERNARD DOUS. Of other classes tho st. Bernards will bea magnifi- cent collectior Mr. Burdet Loonus, Hartford, Mr. Thomas Pearsall, of New York, and others, sent at least thirty specim while to competo with (bem aro a number of the descendents of Alp and Hospice, the champions for many years in Englund Several entries of mastiffs have aiready been cubled trom the other side, and the home country wiil furnish ® quota, many of them the descendants of Lyme Hull breed, bara to beat, ‘Ibe tox terrier, Jachshund, hound, and, in tact, ali other classes pumed jn the premium list’ will be well filled, General Caster’s celebrated pack of deer hounds have been cote by Mr. Miller, of Poughkeepsie, the gentle man in wiose kennels they have found a home, POPULARITY OF THE SHOW. As an indication of the popularity of this show tt is worthy of mention that Mr. August Belmont has en- tered ten, including bis well kuown Gordons, tox ter- riers, &c. Indeed, tbero 1s scarcely a lady in the tash- lonable quarters: ‘of the city who is the owner of a dog who has not entered tt for the coming exbibition. The railroads centring in New York bave uil agreed to carry dogs to and trom the show free of charge. The Western Uuion Telegraph Coinpany will have an office in the garden, and Wagons will be sent tu meet all dogs. a TRAGEDY. Much sympathy is expressed for the officer, as he has been a faitntul and upright member of the department over fourteen years, and hasa wife and six children, At the post-mortem examination on the body of Loux, oid yesterday afternoon under tho order of Coroner simnms, it was learned that the bullet from Oticer UWurtha's revolver eniered between the supra orvital ridge and the frontal eminence on tho right side, going directly through the three lobes of the right hemi- aphere of the brain, passing a little downward avd backward and joaging in the apex of the right posterior Jobe, within about ap inch of the cranial wall, Officer Murtha has been suspended from duty, pending the investigation of Coroner but this action bas been taken iorely as a of torm, every circumstance clearly indicating je officer Was entirely justified 1n shooting Loux. ‘The deceased has always been considered by the police as a quarrel us man, and hes been ar- for drunkeun about forty-five Sincksmith by trade and employed in ® ‘works, ‘THE HOMK OF THK DEAD MAN, ‘The apartments in which the deceased rosided are very poorly furnished, but kept in a neat condition by Mrs. Loux, who is mother of four children, all of whom are living, the oldest beiug eight years of age, Mra, Loux thought a creat deal of ber husband, not- withstanding he treated her badly, and lately, when ‘was committed to Kaymond street Juil for ten days, she jurnished tivm food and tobacco, which she pri ded out of her own scanty eurnings.
