FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, A FE urther Decline in Stocks. GOLD STRONG AT 1047-8 4 1043-4 A 1047-8, Investment Securities Quiet and Steady— Money on Cull Kasy at 2 1-2 a 3 a 2 Per Cent. Wann Stnant, } ‘Tuorspay, March 22—0 P, MM. Tho average stock gawbler ts us industrious as the busy bee in bis searco tur good things offering, and fits from one stock to another as does the msect in question from flower to flower when sweets are becom: ing exhausted. Yesterday the coal stocks were perfect lollipops of sweetness, to-day they had lost more than half their attraction, Literally 80, for transactions iu their shares were diminished in tnis proportion, wile fluctuations fell off tn the samo ratio. Bull Delaware and Lackawanna swayed backward and forward between 567¢ and 58 to the tune of 60,000 shares, and Delaware and Hudson followed with 5,000 shures only, between the limits of 58}; and 593% as tho best showing it could make tor the day. The surplus Stockjobbing energy found its outlet, however, ta Lake Shore, which ever pushes its way to the front, when Speculation fags tm otber quarters. lt was helped to this position to-day by San Francisco influence, which took the shape of extensive sales at the point of 49 and upward and carried the quotation down to 4834, from which there was scarcely more than 3 per cent recovery in final dealings. A htUé moro than the average diurnal’ interest trickled into [llinois Central and Pacific Mail, and tn both instances to the discredit of the stocks, The first turned up uotubly weak, declining from 50 to 47, and the second was all at sew at Irom 2234 to 213¢ and back auain to 2244, Pretty noarly the only evetit of the day was to bo found in the meeting of representatives of the Burling- ton and Quiticy, Rock Island, Nortuwestern and Union Pacific railroads, which was intended for, and took the shape of, a love feast, having ior its purpose ga feconciling of all diflerences between them- selves and an establishment of a satisfac- tory tariff of through freight, It is said that all this was accomplished to the satisfaction of everybody, but the eflect upon prices was practically nil, except thut Burlington and Quincy improved a shade wad grew slightly more im demand, us it was Feasonable it should do, as being most nearly afected by the terms of reconciliation. Although the amount ot transactions in the general market was less by over 50,000 sbaros than that of yesterday, it was more widely and eaually distributed through the eutire list, scarcely a stock that had any Claim to Qotice but that obtained a record of purchase sndsale, Final dealings showed a faint improvement, the news from London that the ‘wrecking’? party in international securities were making no headway pro- ducing @ more cheeriul tecling ia our own market, THK BALKH TO-DAY. ‘The sales of active stocks to-day aggregated 166,000 shares, which were distributed as follows:—New York Sentral, 6,020; Erie, 600; Lake Shore, 64,100; Wa- dash, 100; Northwostern, 900; do. preferred, 800; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 60,700; Now Jersey Central, 100; Velawuro and Hudson Canal, 5,100; Morris and Essex, 340; Michigan Central, 3,840; Tilinols Central, 1,550; Chicago, Burlington aud Quincy, 1,210; Hannibaland St. Joseph, 100; do. pres ferred, 100; Ohio and Mississippi, 1,700; Wostern Union, 11,550; Atlantic and Paciflc Telegraph, 700; Pacitle Mail, 12,400; Quicksilver, 500; American Mor- chants Union Express, 310; United States kxpress, 408; Rock Island, 1,370; Milwaukee and St Paul pre- ferred, 1,100; Pittsburg, 200. = OPENING, HIGHEST AND Lowsst.
