THE HEADLESS COMMON COUNCIL. | THE BROOKLYN ALDERMEN CAST ELEVEN BAL- LOTS—NO CHOICE—CHANGE IN THE DEMO- CRATIC SLATE— DONOVAN NOT CIRCUMVENTED. ‘The corridor of the Brooklyn City Hal! was crowded yesterday afternoon by ward politicians and citizens who are inverested in the election of a permanent Presi- dent of the Common Council, a task which has puzzied ‘Mme members of that body since their first meeting in Senuary last, Betore the usual hour of meeting, two o'clock, the chamber was crowded to excess, and the police, under command of Sergeant Rogers, kept ‘watch and ward’? over the audience with a view to preserving order in the event of any unseemly excitement among the constituents of the rival aspirants tor the long Contested honor of wielding the guyel. There wore whispers current, in semi-official circles, that there Would be no organization effected at that session, Owing to the premature disclosuro of intended move- ments, which had blocked the wheels of diplomacy. The statement published in the Hexanp of yester- day, that the name of Robert Black, of the Fourth ward, would be dropped by the democrats for President, and that William H. Murtha, of tho Nioth ward, would receive the support of the “regular” democratic Aldermen, was verified, The stubborn rep- resentative of the Twelfth ward (Donovan) re- mained true to bis antecedents by voting for himself with unwavering duelity, despite the jeers and scowls of his associates. A considerable amount of general basiness had byen transacted, occupying three hours’ time, when Alderman Griswold introduced the question Of interest to the impatient avd expectant constitu. ents in the lobby, by moving that special meeting of tue Board of Aldermen be Deldes ‘hursday evening xt, at hali-past seven o'clock, for the purpose of considering means for tho election of President. As au amendment Alderman Fisher moved to adjourn to Monday, attwo P, M., und Alderman Lason op- posed the amendment. Alderman Griswold said it would be the old story over again, He, for one, was heartily tired of the abuse wnich had been heaped upou them, it being charged that the Aldermen had motgiven proper attention to the subject. Ho was willing to come there on ‘Thursday evening and, even at much personal inconvenience, do his duty. The Mayor, be understood, would call the members of the Board together and force them to take action if thoy did not ‘themselves show a disposition to do #0, Alderman Burnett (republicun) beheved that out of Tespect to a proper pirformance of duty they ought to heid a special meeting and try to elect a President, but vas Jabor jatendant upon the regular meeting of the d the bad wir which they were compelled to breathe while in sessions on the latter occasions up- fitted them for much uction alter tive o'clock. They had been too long before the public, and special meet- heme yr abe nals until such time as an organization alt be Aga Saostittite for Alderman Griswold’s motion, Alderman Kane moved that the Board proceed to dlect a President viva voce, Tho latter motion pre- vailed, and a vote was taken with tho following re- wult;—Black SOa ty 11; Ray (rep.), 10; Arnott (rep.), 1; Donovan (dem. ), 1. “Alderman Fisher moved that ten succossive votes be tuken for President, Carried. The resuit on the decade of ballots was as follows:— CANDIDATE, > BALLOTS. ‘Ist, 2d, Bd. Ath, Sth. 6th. Tth, Sth. Oth, 10th oe DMM Uh wo gl -10 10 10 10 10 10 7 9 9 10 pene ale then tiie Cane | ‘ 7 21 1 2 7 bee Dees Wale A eae | ballot Alderman Arnott rose and with- drew his pume, requesting that tho members would vote for some otnor candidate, Alderman Burnett, however, cust his vote from first to last for Arnott. As the result of each ballot was announced by the Chair a broad grin and suppressed laughter greeted ‘the announcement among the spectators, Aldermen Ray aud Murtha retrained from voting for ‘Yhemsecives, The number of votes necessary to a zhoice 18 thirteen, ‘The Aldermen who voted for Donovan were:—Baird and Wiiliame, republicaus, and 3terling, democrat, Alderman Fisher said that the balloting had demon- tirated tue fact that there was no way clear out of this feadlock, und therp was no necessity tor holding the 4 ecial meeting proposed by Alderman Griswold’s mo- Hon, Several umendments were offered as to tho time af holding a special meeting to eloct a President, the result being in favor ot Thursday evening next. The democrats usserted frecly after the adjournment of ‘tbe Bourd that they would elect their candidate at the uext meeting. REAL ESTATE.
