FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Market Quiet and Steady. GOLD 105 1-4 A 105 1-8. Government Sonds Lower but Firm at the Close. RAILROAD BONDS IRREGULAR Money on Call Easy at 2 1-2 a 8 Per Cent. Tupusvay, March 8—6 P. Whatever depression existed the night betore was recovered from this morning, and the market ex- hibited a commendable firmness during the day. ‘There were some irregularities, however, Western Union and St. Paul preferred being inclined to sulk and hold back from the general advance, The course ofthe Western Union Executive Committee in dodg- ing the dividend question was not looked upon favor- ably and the price of the stock testified to the tact by declining from 64% to ¢354, though at the end of the day it recovered nearly the entire logs, under the re- port thata dividend of 14; per cent woald be recom- mended by the committee on Monday. ‘The parties who purchased largely against seller 60 options, with the idea of pushing up the price and and then launching a thunderbolt of cash stock upon the market, are disappointed im that the scheme has failed, and that they find themselves possessed of a brutum fulmen only for their pains, The fact 8 that the stock is loaded down with the welter weights of a vigorous opposition, and it js no easy mattter to make the running satisfac. tory to backers, The St. Paul stocks, as noted, were weak in comparison with the rest of the market, busl- ness still continuing unfavorable and the outlook the Teverso of encouraging. Lake Shoro reassumed its position to-day as first favorite, with dealings to the amount of 66,000 shures, and at prices which advanced from 5044 to 62 and returned to 51% at the close, Some of the Twenty-third street peoplo betrayed quite as much anxiety to buy as they had to sell, while considerable amounts of stock were taken for the long account. More confidence js placed in the continuance of the present rates as agreed to by the truuk roads, aud there is further added the statement that 50 per cent would be added tothe tolls of Western bound freiguts on Monday next, At one time a report gained credence that the Suspension Bridge at Niagara Falls bad been condemned as unairworthy, and quite a flutter was oceasioned thereby in tho price of Michigan Central and other roads, Ag it happens, however, that not one broker in twenty has any correct idea of where railroads, as a whole, either commence or end, the speculation became considerably muddled, und in most tages the Bridge story became a veritable pons asino. rum to those who acted upon it, The anthracite fancies, without making much head- ‘way on opening prices, remained strong during the day. The refusal of Judge Lawrence to appoint a receiver for Delaware and Hudson was hike a good mark toa schoolboy, and a fact which the shorts had already anticipated and acted upon, judging from the loaning tate, which to-day in many instances was free from premium. Another clement of strength lent to the coal stock lay inthe report that anew combination was Imminent, but nothing clearly was known of tho matter, and it may be simply @ repetition of the old cry of **Woll!’’ that has so fre- quently startled dealers in their properties, Central and Hudson showed an unusually active besinesz, over 12,000 shares having changed hunds between 957% and 9744, the price at the close falling off gome % percent, It became known that Mr. Vander- bilt had been a purchaser at even higher figures, aud this fact stirred up the bears to the danger of their uation and set them climbing for shares, as the real article does for upples in a zoological pit. There was a general improvement in the bonds of the coal roads, perhaps tor the reasons given for the steadiness of the stocks, and there was more inquiry In this direction on the calls, ‘Toward the close thore occurred a slight reaction in the share list, but the market dnished undeniably strong. a Watt Street, .
