FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Market Firm and Fairly Active. GOLD DOWN TO 104 7-8. ’ ‘ Advance in Atlautic and Pacific, Harlem aud Fanama—Becline in the Coal Stocks. Money Easy at 3 and 8 1-2 Per Cent on Call. Government Stocks Feverish—Railway Bonds Irregular at Mostly Lower Figures, abana: . Watt Strut, Weoyespar, Feb, 21—6 P. M. Dally business in the Board room furnishes, one day with another, an entertainment which, in ita variety, is pot unlike that of the average dinner table. In the latter case we are on one day treated to the artistic achievements of a cordon bleu, on avother we sub mit to the pot luck regimen of a “pig's foot and a car- rot,” In the former case we encounter one day a market swayed to and {ro by astounding rumors, on another we experience u period of calm inactivity. There is an alternation of feast and famine, with fre- quently a spread of cold meats between the two, To- day’s business was somewhat like the latter, resting, WWdid, midway between the extremes of a boisterous excitement and an intense dulness, The coal compani baving made their reports and submitted them to an anusual scrutiny on the part of mvestors and specu. ‘ators, have awaited a verdiét to-day and have read itoa the telegraph tape. It is not favorable as so declared, for the price list shows a fallin Delaware and Hudson of points and in Delaware and Lackawanna of 134 points in the day’s transactions, 1t is aot doubted that the statements are fairly presented so far as they go, but it Is questioned by cuvillers whether, in the words of a legal oath, ‘‘the truth, the wholo truth and nothing but the truth” has been fully told, and whether, in the profound well of their financial troubles, wome particles of this commendabie virtue are not still allowed to linger, Such, at least, was the impres- sion prevailing this afternoon with regard to the Lacka- wanna proporty, god there wore those who shook thoir heads doubtingly at the Hudson property as well. Western Union tmproved upon yesterday’s lowest prices, at one time over 2 per cent, but lost half of it at the close, while Atlantic and Pacife advanced to 21 and = held = there, Lake Shore and the rest of the list remained comparatively Bteady, although Northwest preferred showed considerable strength and unusual activity, The Con- solidation Coal Company held its annual mecting to- day, and elected Mr, Charles F. Mayer president in place of Mr Allan Campbell. The new executlve, as well as all but three of the directors, isa citizen of Baltimore, where about one-half of the stock is held by parties more or less intimately connected with tho Baltimore and Obio Railroad. Mr. Campbell took occasion to present to the meeting,.as the results ot his five years’ administration, the facts that $500,000 of the funded debt had becn paid off, $2,000,000 in cash divided among stockholders anf the company’s railroad fur- uished with steo! rails and new and improved rolling stock, The result of the election indicates a romoval of the company’s offices to Baltimore, and at the same time enables Now York Aldermen who were having their fling at Mr. Campbell to possess their souls 10 peace, THE SALES TO-DAY, . Gold clearings at the National Bank of the State of at the close last ‘The carrying rates Currency balan Gold cleared... One of the causes for the. decline in the gold pre- mium has been the reporting of a bill to-day by the Finance Committee of the Senate authorizing the issue of $10,000,000 of thirty years’ four por cent bonds to redeem an equal amount of Treasury notes, not more than $25,000,000 of the bonds to be issued, or of the ‘notes to be retired, in any one year, and no more than 64,000, 006 in any one month, The bill also authoriz the issue of silver coin to tho amount of $80,000,000, which must include the amount of silver coin already authorized to be issued, to be exchanged for green- backs, All the legal tenders thus retired shall ve caa- celled and destroyed. It is not atall likely that any buch measure as this will become a law during the present session of Congress-—firsi, because the time is too short, and, second, because there are too many in- flationists in the Senate and House, GOVERNMENT STOCKS, Government bonds were lower this afternoon and tlosed feverish at the following quotations:—United States currency sixes, 123 a 12314; do, do., 1881, regis- tered, 111% @ 111%; do, do, do, coupon, 112 0 11254; do, do,, 1865, registered, 108 a 10834; do, do., do., coupon, 108 a 10544; do. do., do., new, registered, 108% 2 109; do. do., do., do., coupon, 108% a 108%; do, do,, 1867, registered, 111% a 112; do, do, do, coupon, 111% a 111%; do. do., 1868, registered, 115 a 116; do, do., do., coupon, 116. 116; do. ten-forts registered, 1093, 0 110; do. do., coupon, 1134 a 113%; NEW YORK .HERALD, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1877.-TRIPLE SHEET. — dy, fives, 1881, registered, 109% = 109%; do. do., do., coupon, 100% a 100% ; do, 44's, 1891, registered, 10535 & 106 34. ‘THUY UNITED STATES TREASURY.
