THE GRAND DUKES. THE DISTINGUISHED RUSSIAN VISITORS ARRIVE IN THIS CITY—THEY GO TO THE OPERA HOUFFE AND ARE WARMLY RECEIVED BY THE AUDIENCE, The proprictor of the Clarendon Hotel, Fourth ave- Bue and Kighteenth strect, was very unexpectedly yesterday morning advised by telegraph from Balti- more that the Grand Vuke Alexis and his party might be expected in New York by the tour o'clock evening train. The two large suits of rooms on = the”—=s first’ = floor, front, were accord- iogly = marked ‘Lugaged,” and, by way of Providing for the evening entertainment of his dis tinguished guests, the proprictor telegraphed to Mr. Maurice Grau, of the Eagle Theatre; to resecve acouplo of boxes for the two Grand Dukes and their party. With that tact for advertising which distinguishes dra- Matic managers, Mr. Grau, in view of the situation and oof tts magnificent possibilities for t+ tracting a lurge audience, did two things. First, he went paragraphs to the evening newspapers to the effect that the Russian Prince was expected at five o'clock, and had engaged two boxes tor the evening, by way of renewing 118 acquaintance with ‘La Per- ichole,” as joterpreied by the piquant Aimée; and, second, be despatched a tnessenger to Dolmonico’s to Degotiute for a couple of flags with which to drape the two boxes at tho leit of the stage, which were assigned ‘to the princaly visitors, From velmonico’s the news | Our repsesentative pianist, and inaoy amateurs attend radiated in all directions, and Murray Hill‘ was thas advised of tie coming event un hour or two belore | rs were delivered. Leaving Norfolk quietly, the two Princes, With their attendants, urrived in Balumore by sue Bay route yesterday morning. here they were met by’ Mr. Fravk Thompson and escorted to a special car for New York, which had been provided in their houor. The journey under such circumstances was a eosey one, the princely purty taking their meals in the privacy of the!r own car, and thus eluding al! populur demonstrations en route. ‘the arrival of the Ducal party at the Clarendon took Place at a quarter betore tive, aud in half an hour they Were comfortably ana cosily settled in the upartments assigned them, which are the most elegantly turnished and commodious in the establishment, although, in uccordance with the expressed wish of the two princes to be treated as private citizens, they are not dig figured with any insigui indicative of the distinction of their occupants. ‘The names of the party appear on the register as “H. 1. A. the Grand Duke Alexis, H. 1. H, the Grand Duke Constantine, Baron Schilling, Dr. Coudaine and two servants, Russian frigate Svetlund in Norfelk Harbor.’? So unceremonious was the ar- rival that it did not even attract the usual group of wpectators ubout the door, and not a single street rec- oguition occurred from the Jersey City depot to the hotel, ‘The Grand Duke Alexis will be remembered in the first cireles of New York as having been of rathor Doyish appearance, although of tall and manly bearing at the date of his former visit His tigure 1s now sonsiderably fuller «nd more portly than it was in those days, and his then delicate complexion has been somewhat bronzed by exposure. No special demonstration on the part of the audience greeted their appearance in therr boxes, nor were they disagreeably ogled during the progress of the representation. Among the audience were Mr. Auguste Belmont, Vohce Commissioner Smith and muvy other notables, and the actors appeared to draw just a zephyr of enthusiasm from the Presence of spectators of such distinction. — In fact, many 4 furtive glance trom dazzling eyes was cast upward and askance at the bale cony, Saving a single soug in Russian in compliment to the Grand Duke Alexis who hud ad- mired it in St. Petersburg, there was no recognition of their presence, although both princes applauded with the beartiness of inveterate lovers of opera bouffe at every dnusual stroke of acting, and laughed as gleotully as other mortals uk absurdity tole Jowed absurdity of situation, The nuptial © between La Perichole and Piquiilo was on e of occurrence, und the revel wat height when La Perichoie, with such dramati ety as seluom occurs except in real life, advanced and Sang a Russian version of Ah! quel diner je viens de faire! Hepps, struck ap the Russian national anthem. At the conclusion ot the anthem the audience rose en masse and saluted the royal party with loud applause and waving of bandkerchiets. The Grand Duke Alexis stepped to the irent of the box apd bowed in reciprocation of the acknowledginent. He then took a seat, und, us he did so, the Grand Duke Constantive came forward.
