NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1877. - TRIPLE SHEET. TINANCUL AND- COMMERCIAL A Flurry in Jersey Central and a Sharp Decline. . Active Speculation in Westeto Union, St Paul, Michigan Central and Lake Shore GOLD STEADY AT 105 5-8. Goseaieeiant and Railway Bonds Gener- ally Steady. WAL StRest, } Wepxespay, Feb. 7—6 P. M. Much of tme intorest which has lately attached to ‘Weatern Union was to-day shunted over to New Jer- sey Central, The announced meeting of stockholders was duly beld according to promise, andthe fluc- tuations in the stocks were mainly due to the flying rumors that emanated therefrom. The meeting was Bot satisfactory. The oflicers appeared to have re- solved themselves into a society of know nothings, ‘and to have adopted the tactics of the non mi ricurdo ‘witness in the trial of Queen Caroline. Questions put to them as to matters of figures were treated hke conundrums, and the guessing at answers ‘was wild and unsatisfactory. Governor Wells, of the Returning Board, had apparently been copied as & mode! of how not to know it, and the information ob- talmed was aa slim and uosavory as that pro- ured from the notorious ballot manipu- lator. For instance, when the amount otf floating debt was inquired into Mr. Koight, the president, surmised it to be about $2,000,000, while Mr. Knox, the secretary, ostimated it to be about $3,000,000. Eventually the matter was compromised by ibe President stating that it “was rising two and one- alt,” Alter some further tooth-pulling for facts upon this point it was elicited that in addition to the above the name of the company was upon Lehigh and Wilkesbarro paper as !ndorser for $1,000,000, and that tm addition nobody had a correct idea of how much was owing for wages and kindred expenses, It was also ascertained that a call loan for $200,000, secured by the ubiquitous bonds of the Lebigh and Wilkesbarre Company, which, like Shakespeare’s actor, seem to have the ability of playing “many parts,’? waa past due, and was only held over'to walt the result of this meeting. ‘The pressing necessities of the company appear to range between $4,000,000 and $5,000,000, und it was plainly stated that if the amount of $3,000,000 was not ft once taken by subscription that the road must go into the bands of a receiver. Previous to the meeting $800,000 had been subscribed for, but it was not learned what amount bad beon added pending the proceeaings, The unfavorable view taken of the company’s con- dition was reflected in the price of the stock, which, from the opening figures of 26, dropped off to 22% and recovered to 233; at the close. The desire to sell Western Union was as eagerly manifested as cver in early dealings, and bad the effect pt lowering the quotation 1 per cent; later on more Mteadiness was shown and the decline partially recov- ered from. Lake Shore, which had been held stub- bornly for most of the day in close proximity to 55, Bave way to 535 during the Inst hour, and showed little or no improvement at the finish. 1t seems pretty certain that cheating is going on in respect to cutting of freights, and an apprehension of a renewed railroad contest is locming up in the distance. (his fear had the effect of pressing considerable Lake 3hore for sale, and exorted a depressing influence upon sho general rallway market, ‘THE BALKS TO-DAY, ‘The transactions at the Stock Excharge to-day Aggregated 190,767 shares:—New York Central and Hudson, 1,230; Erie, 7,800; Lake Shore, 31,000; North- western preferred, 2,400; Rock Island, 1,750; Pacific Mail,” 1,500; St. Paul, 1,000; do. preferred, 8,900; Obios, 1,300; Western Union, 64,400; Union Pacitic, 280; Delaware, Lackawana and Western, 32,810; New Jersey Central, 26,480; Michigan Central, 4,750; Llli- Bois Contral, 805; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 3,900, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWRST PRICES, The following table shows the opening, highest and lowest prices of tho day :— Erie...... 9 Lake Shore. 64: 55 North Western pret. 65 58 83 Rock Islaud...........
