Out of ‘& (ota! amount of 118,000 shares, 63,000 were set down lo the credit of Western Union, the same changing bands at figures which rangea from 74% to 72% and back to 7344 at the close. ‘There have been many curious features pertaining to this Western Union movement. Mr. Gould’s reputed position in regard to tne stock made bim fair game for an attack, and he was set upon by the sleuth hounds of the Califernia party who ex- pected to pull him down tm tracks of bia short con- tracts, The scquel appears, however, to show a dia- metrically opposite result, and ono nos unlike the event sung of by Goldsmith, in which— ‘The man recover’d ot the bite, The dog it was that died, At the commencement of the movement we had oc- Gasion to warn would-be speculators against the wilos of this crafty operator, and to point out the probability bf his sailing along with the pool on the upward tack, Acquiring stock as tnoy acquired 1t, aod -biding his time to tumble the whole Joad over on to their shoulders, _ There ts little doubt bubthat this has happeved just a8 it was suggested it would happen, and we see the Tesult ina five per centdectine. Itis not to bo sup- Posed, however, that this speculative prestidigitateur was content to be as neuter as one ot Mr. HeWitt’s mules; he had his little trick to play and he played it. ‘The siroet calis it a ‘put ap job,’ but the street is never over particular in ite language, and is less 80 when it loses money; so while the pool was hunting Gould Gould was hunting the pool, and ho did it in this wise :—Negotiations, carefaily guarded under the ‘veil of secrecy, were entered into, by which a con- trolling influence in the Atlantic and Pacific line was vo be passed over, fora handsome consideration, to the Western Union Company. This step would, of course, be followed by a cessation of the opposition, a restoration of former prices and an addition of twenty points or so to the market value of the absorbing com- pany. It wasadead secret, but it was contrived that ‘the salient facts should reach the ears of the promi- ‘nent pool operators, Mr. Gould commenced to buy, the pool followed in hig track, and the price rose to 78. Here occurred a mysterious bitch; the clique still con- tinued to purchase wigdrously, but the price refused to advance, One day sonfi# 45,000 shares were taken on a single order, but the quotation did not budge per cent, Shrewd operators, both in and out of tbe pool, dropped out, being satisfied that the supply could come from but oue single source. This was the begin- ning of the end, for Mr. Gould, having shifted his load tothe pool—thereby making a handsome turn and e@heapening «his chronic short line 3 or 4 Per cent—suddenly discovered that the nego- Vations were impossible of consummation and that ‘Western Union was anything but cheap at the then market price.
