IN CHARITY’S NAME. THE BALL AT THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC LAST NIGHT, When New York extends its honds fo charity it generally contrives that the hand shall be gloved 10 the daintiest kid, and wi it extends its benison it clothes the blessing in silk, Fashion does even more, It claims the privilege of garnishing its efforts with diamonds, and the bull at the Academy last uigot was the convocation of the élife, as the charity entertainment for the benefit of the Nursery und Child's Hospital alwave is. It 13, in plain, the prospective aud objec- tive poimt of the season’s gayeties. Select coteries ‘wait for the charity und invariably bring with them tbe outside world, This outsido world was tn torce out- side the Academy lust night, The cold, damp pave- ments were trodden by thinly-ahod feet, standing tn Serried ranks of indigenco beneath the glare of the calcium—tor, whatever may be the accorded priv- ilege of those who were driven to the ball io their satin-lined coaches, the belle who shrugs her pretty dimpled shoulders beneath the silken ¢loak, ‘with its comfortable lining ot tur, cannot avoid being looked at by the peopie whose presence in the street Upon festive nights at the Academy, may be compared to tho fringe that borders the yurmeuts of fashion, 1018 a consolation for the under world to look ap to the upper world, and there is ab least & sign of ite, gayety and freedom {rom care ju thes haviliments of expeusive texture, aad gets of the purest water do lovk bupdsome, eves tv poor tolks’ eyes, ax (he wearer steps Irom the couch to tne Academy door, and the breezes of a chill Feb- cuury wight watt across Irving place tie odors of the Doudoir and the drawing room, mingled with th \t 0! exotics in sho bouguels of fasuion’s favorites luside the Academy the decorations — were simple, Wisdom, —perbaps, on the part of the management, dictatea the policy of saving Money wheu times are supposed to be bard, and when even deverving churity 1s compelled to solicit uid witu Teuewed vigor aud Well-timed persistence. Hali an hour later the scene from tue boxes und the back of the dancing Soor Was su- rb. agen fairy land had suddenly veen unfolded, aud, 4g if Aladdin, with his wonderiul lamp, had been an Unvidden guest, tue brilliancy of the grandest ball bf the season developed itsel. Mesmer and Caghostro first feveloped in the last century that occult science, which bangs between fraud and mystery as Mahomet’s toffin bung between heaven und earth, Since then there have been a hundred pretenders—Home, Slade, Foster, aud any number of women—who when they shut their eyes sce more than they ever could when they are open. Onc medium has a strange affection for Shakespeare, and receives revelatious from the seventh sphere, in which the immortal Williams says, “To be or not to be, is not the question.” Another is in sleep coufidential with wwe ghost of Edgar Allan Poe, and is informed by Lim that the grim and ghustly raven from the night’s Piutonan shore should have said “Evermore,” instead of the melancholy refrain which we know. Materialized spirits have come out of wardrobes in the person of Kate King aud Anuie Fay, but havg tor- gutten to get checks for thelr overcoats, Ali sorts of tricks have boen played by these spirits, not quite so jood a§ those of Helier, the Hergwus, or tue tate Signor Blitz, yet chuming to be revelations from the world of spirits. Yesterday afternoon Steinway Hall was crowded from purquct to dome on occasion of a public rehearsal by Theodore Thomas. Never before bas Steinway Hall been so crowded at a performance. The rehearsal was given for the fourth symphony concert, which takes pluce Suturday night. Mime. SAN FRANCISCO MINSTRELS, Birch, Wambold and Backus, with their full troupe of jsixteen .performers, besides a clever orchestra, drow a full house last night at their gem of an operatic salon on Broadway. The latest attraction of the San Franciscans 1g what is termed in the bills an opéra bougfe called the ‘Happy Moke’—tusic by Offenbach and several others of iess note. It i a bighly colored adaptation of the Irish tarce called the “Happy Man,’’ in which the late Barney Williams was once so great atavorite, The present affair is amusingly gotten up, and, with the final dioramic scene ot the Bay ot Jeddo, was well received. Billy Birch as the Happy Moke was funny; Add Ryman as Ram Rusty, the Japaneso Emperor, was stern and peculiar, and Char- ley Backus as Fum-Jum-Bee, the fourt Jester, created considerable merriment by his Teudition of a popular Japanese air in the pure vernac- ular. For the regular parlor entertainment there was a good variety of scrious ballads, comic songs and dit- ties, the finale, ‘A Hundred Years Ago,’’ being espe- ctally received with favor, The end men, Birch and Backus, were full of drolleries, “the middle man, Add Rymao, kept the funny bail busily rollit for the byzlay, while Wambold, as the “sweet, singer,” was admirable, Th recklessness with which Charley Backus throws about his jokes 1s absolutely paraira Charley is also good in his inmitations of favorite actors. Ryman’s political oration ts the first thing of the sort in the market. Johnson and Powers in their ion he songs and dances are also laughable, and E. M. Hall, the banjoiet, 18 fair? but altogether too mouest. A'pleasant evening can always be passed at this cosey and weil ordered shrine of Ethiopic min- iy. MUBICAL AND DRAMATIO NOTES, The fat men’s race at Gilmore's Garden to-morrow evening is likely to be one of the most ludicrous events of the season. “Forbidden Fruit,’? with tho company of which Mr, Lewis Morrison is manager, and in which he plays the principal part, is having great success in the West. The celebrated American prima donoa, Miss Emma Abvoit, mukes her début at Chickering Hall on Wed- nesday ning next. The event will be an interesting one in masical circles, ‘This evening, at Association Hall, the second of the series of concerts given by Miss Arabella Root, should attract a largo audience, not only for its charitable object, but because of the excellence of the entertain- ment, Miss Rovt will sing her charming ballads, and will be assisted by a fyye company. Miss Clara Srorris takes her farewell benefit to-night at the Union Square Theatre, and will play for the jast time but one her great creation of Miss Multon, The terrible strain on her nervous system during the run of the play has been such that rest has been deemed absolutely necessary for this favorito actress, Next week she leaves New York for the more genial atmosphere of California, to regain that health and strength upon which inroads have been made by tho sevore duties of an arduous profession, ‘Tho amatour theatrical performance of tho ‘School for Scandal’? at the Lyceum Theatre to-morrow night, jor the benefit of the Rosendale Mission, promises to bo one of the most successful affairs of the season. SHREYER'S FINE PICTURE, ‘THE ADVANCE,” AT KOHN'S ART GALLERY. & magnificent painting, representing a body of Arabs charging, was yesterday placed on exbibition at Kobn’s art galiery, in ¥ifth avenue, “It is one of the most spirited of the many excellent works we have seen from this artist, who seems to stamp everything ho touches with an individuality and vigor wholly his own, In the preseut work his power of reproducing the characteristics of the people he pants js seen to advantage. These wild, dashing horsemen ure not merely cavaliers, dashing torward at headioug speed, ‘They are Arabs and cannot be mistaken for any people else, not merely in their garb, but in the peculiarity of their formation, their gestures and features, Any one who has bad the not over pleasant experience cf secing a cloud of Arab horsemen advancing to the attack will atonce recognize in Shreyer’s figures the veritable sons of the desert and their not less flery steeds, In the foreground the artist has placed ove well defued and powerfally drawo Arab. His borse 1s going over tne broken, rocky and shrub-encumbered ground at a terrific pace, and so woll is the sense of action conveyed that we icel some justtocfive tear lost mun and horse should leap trom the canvas, The horse is om bis mottie and mad with excitement, while the man, with the assured seat of a boru norseman, tries to plorce the wornuing mists tm search of the enemy. The attitude of the horseman is full of energy, and theartist bas caught, with happy offeot, the peculiar style of riding adupted by the Arabs. ‘he mass Of horsemen in the d'stance are wffectively grouped and we cun well imaging the work these men are vent on in the gray morniug. The technique is also very good but strougly marked by the individuality of the artist, The work as a whole js full of dusn and vigor, It Pleasant to note the marked improvement in the qua’ ity of the pictures whicd dealers are now importing from Europe, 1¢ no longer pays to bring over the in- ferior productions of foreign artists, ag they tind he no purchasers.
