% FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Still Irregnlar—aA Sharp Decline the Former Investment Securities. -_-— GOLD STEADY AT 105 5 Money on Call 4 and 5 Per Ceut—Government Bonds Active and Firm, and the Best Rail- way Mortgages a Trifle Higher. Sraeer, } ‘TUESDAY, bo 30—6 P.M. There was no such thing gotting the bearing Of prices from the Stock Exchange compass to-day, for the needle of fluctations was as variable as the card in a ship’s binnacle in Northern latitudes, At the opening st pointed most unmistakably to lower Prices, next swung clear round toward higher ones and subsequently repeated the previous inovements, reeting at the end of the day in the dircetion of a compuratively strong market. The antbracite fancies Proved to be the loadstone of the day’s business, at- tracting the wandering attention of operators, and in a mannet directing the course of speculation. Now Jersey Central turned out to be the most erratic Of the trio, dropping from 27 to 243; and ending at 25% alter frequent fluctuations between the highest and lowest points. Although the injurious statements put forth against the property have been qualified and even denied in a semi-ofllcial way, it does not seem to have dispelled the disbelief of shareholders, judging from the amount of long stock which daily seeks a market. This {s the more observavle trom tbe fact that the supplies are reaching here from Philadelphia, where the Inst and Girmost friends of the road bad made a stand, as though ft were a modern speculative Thermopyla, {t was predicted that matters would come to a pass like this, when investors would get tired of holding the fort, and sauve qui peut would become synony- mous with orders tosell. In the afternoon a check was given tothe rout by news that ald wou!d be fur- nished from an unlooked for quarter, in the shape of a new president anda reconstructed dirgetory, the same to be turnished directly or indirectly by, or at it under the auspices of the Lehigh Navigation Company, Although the report came in questionablo shape, it still proved a straw to be clutched at by sinking hold- ers, while at the game time it appoared a threatening spectre to overveniuresome bears; hence, between the two interesis the prico was rallied as noticed above, Even larger transactions are recorded in Delaware and Lackawanna, though prices wore not 60 sensitive A matter of 3 per cent decline from the opening figures formed the maximum of damage, though a por- tion of this was recovered trom at the close, With the foregoing prominent coul fancies lumbered along the less excitable Delaware and Hudson, making, however, about the same decline and sticking to it at the ond. In the same groove with the anthracites moved along the Llinois Central, pushed downward by the weight of unfavorable business and a cloudy future. Less than 5,000 shares were dealt in at prices that gradually yielded from 5514 to 52 and so finished. - The great tavorites, Western Union and Lake Shore, Were overshadowed by the excitement which hung about the coal stocks, and were only sparingly dealt in by the pools. Late inthe day the market improved and closed moderately strong, the impetus upward being Kiven by St. Paul preferred, whieh suddenly spurted from 463¢ to 4774, but fell back again to 474; under rumors that some legal steps had been taken which ‘would be of advantage to the company} THE SALBS TO-DAY ‘Aggregated 127,000 sbares, which werc distributed as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 1,330; Erie, 400; Lake Shore, 27,200; Northwestern preferred, 900; Rock Island, 1,800; Pacific Mail, 600; St Paul, 1,100; do, preferred, 13,000; Ohios, 950; Western Union, 20,000; Wabash, 600; Union Pacific, 1,750; Dela- ware and Hudson Vanal, 2,725; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 39,960; New Jersey Central, 21,675; Michigan Central, 4,500; Llinois Central, 4,550. * OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES, The following table shows the opening, highest and lowest prices of the day:— Opening.
