FRANCE. Spiritualism Before the Courts—A Dis- ciple of Pythagoras. CURIOUS BREACH OF PROMISE CASE. \ Germany's Perfect Knowledge of French Fortifications. Courbet and Napoleon |.—A Boast That Was Ill-Timed. Panis Jan, 14, 1877, ‘A caso of much interest to Spiritualists has just been * decided by the Court of Appes! at Aix, Mme. Placide Reybaud, a resident in the old Roman town, died last year, when she was found to have made a will by which only a life interest in certain estates was re- served to her husband, while the bulk of her property, which was considerable, was bequeathed, including the reversion of the husband's interest, to a female friend of the decessed, Mme. Placide Reyband, who nad disposed of her fortane in so unexpoctod a manner, was during the Tater years of her life a fervent believer in Spiritual- ism. It was also affirmed that she was the victim of frequent baliucinations. She often spoke of the trans- Migration of souls and of the mystic bonds which Unite the living to the spirits ot the departed, Some yeurs since Mme. Reybaud’s son Theophilus died and she long remained inconsolable, At length the mother persuaded bersell that she had power to call up the spirit of her dead child and to bold inte course with him. Muny bours did she pass thus, and Many more in deep meditation, Mme, Reybaud also ‘wrote poetry and romances, in which she devoloped her favorite ideas, Her style is said to have been Bebulous, The deceased was passionately fond of music, and a short time betore hor death set herself to Jearn the piano, a circumstance which, together with the mistiness of per style, seemsto have been noted by her husband as a proof of insanity. 1t shouldseem, moreover, that she had a fancy for playing only with one hand. Mme, Reybaud was not oniy a believer in Spirituel- ism, but A MEDIUM, As such she was naturally in groat request at séances, and hor husband complaiued that she not only exe! cised her medium power at these gatherings, but read her mystic compositions and even caused them to be sung. Clearly, every author who inilicts his or her compositions on an evening party 1s, in the opinion of the worthy M. Reybaud, hopelessly mad. The only serious ground, igdeed, on which the will could be disputed was one particular hallucination which does seem to have more or less affected the judgment of the testatrix. Mme, Reybaud, who might ‘ave boasted thut she was NO MORK MAD THAN PYTHAGORAS, believed that the iriend to whom she lott Ler property bad been in a former existence the wile of Béranger, and that in the next world the same person would be her sister or mother, it did not clearly appear which, Tbe civil court of Aix upon this evidence annulied ‘the will, and the Court of Appeal has now upheid the decision of the inierior trivunal, From these judg- ments one may learn some practical rules of conduct :— 1, Do not believe in spiritualism. 2. Nor in metempsychosis, %& Cultivate a clear literary style, 4@ Avoid the practice of reading your poems to friends. 6. Abstain from meditation, 6. Do not be so absurd as to entertain any serious belief in the immortality of the soul. 7 Do not learn to play the piano late in life, Ifyou will bear these and a few other rules in mind you inay be allowed to dispose of your property as you please—subject to restrictions. The decision of the Aix court by the way should be enough to fill some nebulous writers on both sides ot the atiantic with alarm. Even a man of Mr, Brown- ing’s genius may fcel uneasy. ‘There is A CURIO’S STORY told of the effect produced by Paracelsus” on the lute Mr, Theodore Hook, wno, being contined to bis bed by ilinoss, was sent’ acopy of the new poom to amuse him, After reading a fow lines Hook, with the ‘utmost agitation of mind depicted on his coun bance, thrust the book into his wite’s band, saying, “Read it, read i,”” Mrs. Hook did asshe was requested and uiter two or three minutes looked up with a puzzled expression of countenance. s Well,’ asked ber hus- band, ‘“‘well?” ‘Why, I can’t understand a word of ut,” she observed. ‘Thank Goa!” exclaimed Hook, “then I have not lost ad reason,” ‘A better specimen of FREXCH JUSTICE is to be found in the decision of the Civil Tribunal of Nevers with respect toa breach of promise case re- cently before it, In France both the issue of law and the issue of fact are tried by judges in these matters, without the intervention of ajury, and the legal mind is rarely disposed to be unduly sentimental, (n Eng- land the suit of Gippon vs Charroy would, it may salely be asserted, have had quito another ending than that which French law devised for it, Mme. Gippon, | widow of thirty-ono autumns, and the mother of a family, claimed $4,000 against a young man ol twenty- three, who had made her a promise of marriage which he had neglected to carry out Ts was alleged for the defence, however, that the promise had been condi- tional; that the conditions had not been fulfilled on the part of Mme. Gippon. jon Piainuil produced a document which ran as fol- wa Dxcizx, (Neivre) Nov. 8, 1874, I. the undersigned, Lonis-Lucicn Chareoy, controller of direct contributions’ at Decize, hereby pledge myself to aarry Ippon in case, 45 'a consequence of our rola- tions, she should become u inother, thus to legitimate, by fan eternal union, the child which should be born to rae, UCIEN CHARROY. By and by Mme. Gippon declared she was about to become a mother—a statement which was eventually veritivd, but M. Charroy had grave reasons for doubt @stothe paternity of the child, which he refused to jogiimate “by an eternal union.”’ Hence the action. THK JUDGMENT of the Court set forth that whereas the widow Gippon was of mature age and the mother of atamily, and therefore presumably able to take periect care ol her- self and her honor; and whereas M. Charroy at the time of making the promise was not of an age at Which he could cootract murriage without his father’s consent; und Whereas the coutract was an immoral One from the beginning; and whereas there seemed every reason to believe that the widow Gippon had cunningly speculated on the unreflecting passion of young Charroy, and hoped by the threat of exposure to compel him’ to pay a heavy fine, the Court, taking all these circumstances into account, dismiasea the suit of widow Gippon with costs, Among the subjects over which PARIS 18 LACGIING at the present moment, though somewhat uneasily, Is the publication of General Briaimont’s work on the defence of States and intrenched camps. lecting materials tor bis book General Brialmont ap- pled to the French government for the necessary documents concerning the fortitications of Paris, The French governinent refused to divulge the secrets of the State, whereupon the Belgian author, nothing discour- ‘aged, wrote to Berlin und from the War Uilice of that Sapital obtained ail the mformation be desired concern- ing the fortresses both of Germany and Franee. In- deed, the German military authoritios went so tar as to communicate to him the plan of tho untinished torti- fications around Paris ana several projects which have been suomitted to the Min rot War, When General Briaimont’s book appeared it was determined at first to demand tho seizure of the work, iu order, a8 a critic observed, to prevent the Prussians reading in Frevch what they tad communicated to German. 1 is not supposed here that any treason haw ben committed, France possesses the exact plans of aii the German forts, and it 18 weil nigh impossible to keep fortitications secret. Before the fall ot the Ean- ire interesting models of all the strong places in oon wero exhibited in a gallery of the Louvre. Phe rain of ANECDOTES concerning poor Henry Monnier continues. Here isa ‘whimsical one which teils of @ practical joke played in coucert with his Iriend Romien, The two had taken their seats in au omnibus which was already pretty Well fliled, whon there entered an enormous man, who seomed likely to squeeze two or three of the passen- gery outof ali shape, Now tne tat man wore several gaudy jooking rings on his Mayers, and Monnier forih- with devised w plan for getting rid of the fut man on $hat hot July alternoon, An exchange of giances with Romien was quite enough, Suddenly the lauer seemed to undergo « fearful and wondrous change. His eyes assumed the fixity of idiocy, his lower lip twitched convulsively and sight foam was even visi- bie ou his mouth. ‘The entertainment now commenced. Roms (Pointing to the tat manj—Ring!
