GOLD 106 1-2 A 106 3-8. Money on Call 5 and 4 Per Cent—Governments Strong, but Not Notably Active— Railway Mortgages Steady. WAL. StREzT, } Moxpay, Jan, 22—6 P. Mf In comparison with the long succession of diurnal Contests between bull and bear, which in importance have been little better than sham fights, this morning has turned out a pertect fiela day. The tires of specu- lation, which had commenced to burn up brightly at the close of business on Saturday, remained banked over Sunday, and to-day wore raked into vigorous life, creating a full head of steam and setting the wheels of trade going merrily. An aggregate of over 200,000 shares was the summing up of the day’s transactions, ot which nearly one-half is to be placed to the credit of Western Union, rendering this at once the cynosure ot stock jobbing eyes und an enigma to puzzled brokers, ‘The vigorous advance to 78 from 76}, and the sub- Wequeént slip back to 77}, at which it closed, is more pasily recorded than are the intentions of the manipulators, which have mystified the “‘ly-catchera’’ of the street and sent them home with distended and unsatisfied jaws. The purchases to the extent of tome 40,000 shares by Messrs. Work, Strong & Co., tet the quidnuncs wildly guessing as to for whose ac- count the transaction had been accomplished, whether for Gould, wno is imevitably made to father every oc- cult movement, or for the California party, which, for ‘®& week past, has been bearing the sweat and burden ot & rather obstinate speculation. It mattera little whether either or neither surmise be correct, but tho fact remains that the entire burly-burly secured but \ per cent advance as u net result of the day’s work. Surely a seanty return for the extensive laundry ar- rangements which were put in operation. Transactions in Lake Shore, less but more legitimate, figured up for 53,000 shares, and were made between 663g and 5734, at which latter price it closed, Michi- tan Central came in for 30,000 shares at prices ranging trom 49 to 5034, apart of wnich advance was lost in Anal sales. Both of these two stocks were benefited by the favorable wind which blew trom Western Union, wailed along with sheets lifted and under no obliga- Mons to other assistance than that of a timorous short interest for their strength and buoyancy. As the three Mocks referred to ubsorbed more than three-fourths of the day’s transactions, but little was leit to divide ap through the rest of the list, though that littie was for the long account, and withan attendant stif- feuing of prices. Gold bangs fire in spite of the better state of politi- cal matters at home, and sold vo-day ai 1064, a 1063, with the latter as the final price. Bulls are less ine clined to sell. as they are carrying their load at the easier rates of 4 to 6 per cent, and still have hopes of a bellicose break-out in Europe during the carry spring. Aneary universal belief exists in the share market that the Presidential question will be settled without popular turmoil, and this has given birth to a strong teeling in favor ofa higher market. Hence the set back in prices this afternoon is no more evidence to the contrary than is the breaking of a 2:20 trottera guarantee that be will not win the race. The sales to-day were as follows:—New York Central and Hudson, 1,950; Erie, 7,200; Lake Shore, 53,150; Northwestern, 1,400; do. preferred, 600; Rock Island, 5,285; Pacific Mail, 600; St. Paul, 1,000; do. preterred, 9,100; Ohios, 1,700; Western Union, 92,100; Wabash, 800; Union Pacific, 1,300; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 7,750; New Jersey Central, 4,500; Michigan Central, 30,300. i WIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES, ‘The following were the highest and lowest prices of stocks to-day :— Highest, Lowest. 37 3615 Lake Snore... Maplos, Vice Principal of Grammar School No, 19, located in the Seventeenth ward, It appears that this dispenser of education has been before the Committee on Teachers before for a breach of the bylaws, the offence being the chastise: ment of a pupil, Upon examination, however, be wag exonerated from censure and continued. Recently @ charge has been brought against bin for meompe tency to ll his position, Ho was accordingly sent to jo City Su ntendent for examination, and a meéting soon to be held before the Committee on T to imvestigate the charges, A reportor of the Hegaip sought an interview with Mr. Maples (the offending Vice Principal), and pro- ceeded to Grammar School No. 19 for that purpose. A janitress of Kind but decided mien quietly informed the reporter that ‘Indeed, Mr. Maples did not be there can I find him, thon?’ inquired the tntere locutor. “That's Just what i don’t know, sir. Perhaps, if you'll step up to tne male department some hi Fo ee can tell you,’’ and, as if to avoid further conversatt the jantiress with the kind and decided mion quickly 4 off in another direction, CLIMBING TO CONQUER. ‘oportet followed her waugeations to “st 4 to the male department, and proceeded to ascend the namerous but easy flights of stairs that led to that provineo, Following the sound of children’s clatter he found himself tn the central room, Where a file of sinall ur- ching wore receiving written Dassen of some descrip. tion from the genial principal, Mr. Doane, As soon a8 this important business had been de- spatched the scribe timorously approached the desk behind which this special supervisor #at enthroned and inquired for Mr, Maples, Had & bombshell ex- ploges before him Principal Doano could scarcely have kod more amazed.
