KING OF THE BILL STICKERS. ANOTHER INJUNCTION TO RESTRAIN PAULDING FROM ‘‘COVERING” OTHER PEOPLE'S BILLS-~ HIS CAREER AND ITS TERRORS, A war among the, bill posters is tho meeting of two etient but terrible forces in something very like morta, conflict, People who read from the street car windows such lines in bold letters as “Forbidden Fruit,’ “Miss Malton’? and ‘‘Lemous”’. can form no adequate concep. tion of the constant watchfulnoss and warfare neces- sary-to keep these names conspicuously displayed. Searcely a week passes that the manager of somo theatre is not in despair because his bills have beon “covered.” During tbe last week the observant traveller arouna New York might havo read in tho course of his peregrinations announcements like theso, “Edwin Booth Walking for That Cake,” ‘Tbe Happy Moke Forbidden,” ‘All for Her Divorce,” “Daw’l Druce Taming the Shrew,” “The Amorican Azurene Female Bathers,”’ and “Miss Multon Tony Pastor’s Lewons.” 1{ he had known the meaning of these dreadiul phrases he would have been aware that another battlc between the bill posters was imminent, and the courts would be again imvoked to exert their inefloctual authority to shield the bil! boards from such direful desecration, Paulding was evidently at work once more to compel the theatres to employ him and to drive his rivals out of the business, and on Saturday Mr. William Reagan, of No, 26 Ann street, filed an audertaking in the Court of Common Pleas, asking for an injunction to restrain the king of the bill stickers from violating tho autonomy of other princes in the same line, THE KING OF THE DILL STICKERS, Mr. Henry J. Paulding, who deserves this title by the spirit und gallantry with which be maintains his pre-eminence, acquired his regal authority in the same way as all predatory chieftains who preceded him, As the good King Arthur, aided by lis Knights of the Round Table, put down all the turbulent kings of Britain, so the great King Paulding has overcome oll rival bill stickers. He is, however, not the first ruler who was the terror of his own peculiar domain. Nixon, of unfragrant memory, who died suddenly in the Tombs cue morning trom dislocation of the neck, was not only before bim in actual kingship but in prowess also, A terrible man was Nixon in the man- ager’s office of a metropolitun theatre, More than once did the valiant Tooker trembie at his demands, and half the theatres in New York kept him tn thor employ through the fear engendered by his arrogance, Jt i tuir to assume that Nixon wouid nover have mur- dered Pfeiffer but for the facility ho acquired in that direction by browbeating theatrical managers, If they resisted him he threatened them, and they were gen- crully glad to surrender; but if they shut themscives ju from his approaches “he covered their three-sheot posters with the worst rubbish that sought publicity at bis hands, AS NIXON'S SUCCESSOR, Paulding, his successor in the kingship, 1f not so bold, is not legs terrible. Managers have fewer occa- sions to tremble before him, but they havo no less rea- ron to fear bim, He deties bis rivals, the theatres and the courts. Ho 18 ‘in contempt” oftener than any man in New York. It 16 only a week or two since ho was fined $50 for detying tbe authority of ono ot the judges and a tow weeks before he was compelled to pay $450 for differing with the courts in regard to his rights in bis own kingdom, And now he has been at it again covering the sovereignty of Mr. Reagan with his vicious proclamations, When Mr. Reagan adver- ised a moral weekly newspaper Mr, pagonoas, eovered his bills with the “gutter suipes” of a naughty place’ of resort on the west sido, When Mr. Reagan filled his fences ite information touching soap and biack- ding wi and polished them alter his own fashion. Reagan’s billboards were not safe day or night from Vaulding’s 1ucursions, and it was plain that ho must cither overcome his udversary or ullow bis dominfons to be swallowed up in those of the king of the bill-stickers. To this end he has just applied to Judge Joseph F. Daly to restrain Paulding and bis co- adjutore, and the law and the offender will again met face to {ace one of these fine mornings, STICKING TO KACH OTHER. It will thus be seen that bill stickiug as an occupa. tion is exceedingly precarious, and that the bill stickers, who are always at war with the theatres and with each other, are people one would prefer not to meet in the dead hours of the night. When they are nt comparative peace, however, their occupation 18 an index of the prosperity of those who turnish mankind with amusement or with soup, When tho bill sticker |s busy the rest of the world 13 in the height of enjoy- ment When the bill sticl is idle the business ot amusement 18 at alow ebb pr the unwashed and un- lished are tuo poor to buy cither soap or blucking. ust now the prevatling theatrical staguation works Injery not one to the king of the DNL stickers but to ail the tribe, The flaming pictures of impossible scenes in impossibe dramas in these dull times seldom adorn dead walls and fences. Nowadays bill stickers ure not often mirusted with the flattering portraits of ‘leading ladies’ or pictures of distin- suished “stars”? ip the most marvellous of attitudes. The business of the theatres is so dull that 1t does not even pay toudvertise, It is this, perhaps, that puts Paulding on bis mettic and induces him to try to make bill sticking both unprofitable and impossible to his rivals. He evidently thinks that the fleld is small enough for the king of the biil stickers, and that there js bo room in bis Kingdom for the princes of bis pro- fession, At any rate, lie bas again defied thy law and the courts, but it remuins to be seen whethor Reagan’s wrongs are to be redressed or whether Paulding is to conjinue to exercise his sovereignty undisturbed, ORDERED TO DEATH, A STRANGE STOKY OF AN ‘‘UNLUCKY" SHIP AND A MUTINCUS CREW—THE SHIP FIRED— TWO SAILORS ORDERED BELOW ARE SUFFO- CATED, On the night of Thursday, December 27, a fire broke out on board the sbip Harvey Mills, of Thomaston, Me., lying in Beaulort River, beiow Port Royal, and ladon with a full cargo of cotton for Liverpool. Tho United States vesecis of war in the vicinity, as soon as the ularm was given, sent strong detachments of men, with firo apparatus, on board the ship. Other vessels sent aid, and every effort was made to quench the flames which rose from the hatches, but in vain. The fire continued severa) days, and it was not until the vessel was towed to Port Royal and filled with water that the fire was entirely extinguished, Two lives were lost and several mon were injured. The Coro- per’s jury returned a verdict of accidental death—a verdict which did not satis!y the sailors who suryived, aud who tell the following strange story :— THe SHIP, ‘ihe Harvey Milis is a pew full rigged ship, owned in Thomaston, Me. Her captam 1s named Mills and he is & parLowner, She carries a crew of eighteen to twenty men, inoluding her officers, The Harvey Mills took on ber cargo at Port Royal and dropped down the haroor Leberg ® to h@ voyage to Liverpool, ‘The crew, engage ‘New York, cume down, and tho first night they passed on board ‘the ship seemed to impress them unfavorably. This feeling grew upon them unul they pronounced the ship “umucky.’? A few days be- fore the time appointed for the commencement of the voyage the crew determined that they would not sail inher. Going alt they go informed the captain, who, assisted by his officers, promptly replied by putting them all im irons, THE MUTINKERS FIRE THE SIP, On Thursday night smoke was discovered carling up from the after hold, and that most terrible ery on sbip- board, “Virel’? was passed along the deck. Of course there was nothing at bond to put out the tire, und everything was ata standstill ontila large number of men trom the United States naval fleet arrived on board, wader command of Lieutenant Rockwell, They brought with them fire exupguishers and the pumps were manned, Water Was poured into the snip, but the fire continued to make headway, and the volumes o! emoko rolled up denser ana denser trom the hold, The crew, suilor-like, now turned: to with a wili and helped undo the, mischief they lad created, All daring the night the fire continued to burn; the cotton had been well fired and it was found impossible to put it ont, Steam tugs trom Port Royal came food the Vessel with water, and a party of cit unteers from Port Koyal also appeared upon the scene aud offered their services. ORDERED TO DIF. ‘Tho following day it was thought that the only chance to save the vessel was to weigh anchor and proceed up to the Port Royal docks. There the vesrul could be scuttled and sunk and afterward raised, Thre could not be sutely dove at the anchurage. One of the poatswains of the slip (she hud two) ordered two men into the chain locker to be ready to stow the anchor chaims when the anchor wag raised. The chain locker ix a small place forward, below the lower deck, was reached on the Marvey Mills through a woode shute. The lower bold of the vessel was filled with carbonic acid gas, and the boatewain must bave had some suspicion of the danger as he did not as was bis usual custom, necompany the men into the locker. ‘The opinion of the sailors and of one ot the Coroner's Jury, who bad been a sailor, as afverward expressed, was ‘that the men had been deliberately ordered to their death, any rate the men ordered by the oficer that dared not accompany them went inio the shate and were brought out dead, THE KRSUUK. Immediately upon heariog that some men wero in danger, if not already dead, a rush was mado forward and every effort put iorth to save the two unfortunate suilors, he wo boatswaius volunteered to go dowa, The one Who bad ordered the nen there went down ng far as between decks und Was driven back, almost over: come, The other voatewain then went down and with the assistance of several of the crew succeeded in get- ting up one body, There was a hush tora tew mo- d then several volunteers came forward, in- Lieutenant Rockwell, Andrew A. Wails, of ork, a volunteer, was chosen, and went do In afew moments (he other body was recovercd and Walls was drawn up. Tbe names ot the untortonate nen were Charles Hodge, of this city, and ——- Antone, residynce uuknuws. Hodge leaves w wile and cuild in this city entirely destiute, TUN CHEW DESERT. A day or two afterward, the fire still burning, the ship Was taken to Port Royal and docked, Hardiy Was she (here Lelore almost the enure crew, inelnuing fhe LoatsWalhe, veserted and scattered over the coun. wy. But from remarks rt oe men and heard by dur informant, and circumstances ofthe fire, itis pretty Ge jury returned a verdict of acci- one, ‘beand one wishing to censure the oflicers for sending the men below, THE LOST CHAMPION. The sehooner Champion, of Prince Edward’s Island, bound from that port to Baltimore, was wrecked in midocean and the crew saved by the brig Apollo, from Quebec for this port, The schooner was sighted on Jauuary 6, and was then in a waterlogged cond She was dismasted and sinking when tho rescue took fac , und but afew ‘hours more aud it would have mn too late, She was loadea with potatoes and car- riod a crew of six men, including the master, Jonn McDonald, all of whom were saved. BUSINESS TROUBLES, Tho report bas ‘beer received in this city of the failure of the Lohigh Valley Fire Insurance Company, of Allentown, Pa. Inquiry was mado at the ofice of the National Board of Fire Underwriters as to the resources and liabilities of the concern, but no state- ment had been received, as the company ha no repre. sentative in the Buard, From the reports on file it appears that the fepcke f ‘was incorporated i 1866, and insured on the mutual plan, but had been doing a losing business for several years past. Money; Treasurer, Reuben Stabler; Secretary, H.C, Hunsberger. ‘The liabilities of Trippe & Son, wholesale druggists, at No, 243 Canal street, whose” assignment was an- nounced yesterday, will not amount to $25,000 The cause of their tailure was tho goneral business depres: wi id lack of capital. *'The failures of Thomas K. McKeon, boots and shoes, at Ne 470 Third avenuo; Josoph Spor, boots aud shoes, at No, 445 Etgbth ‘avenue, and B. Crandall, dealer in toys at No, 182 Fulton street, Brooklyn, to Isaac Leopold, of No. 114 Chambers street, New York, The business of Mr. Crandall tor several years previous to 1876 was more than $30,000 perannum. The holiday toy trade last year tell be- hind $4,000. His liabi ities are about $12,000, and his assets $5,000. PUNISHING IMPIETY. To tae Eprror or THe Hrranp:, An article 1n tho HEKALD, of the 10th inst., headed “Thrifty Reformers,” does a great injustice to the new Shoriff, Bernard Reilly. It states, ‘During the last week the Deputy Sheriffs have made over 100 arrests, compelling men under arrest to change or renew their bonds, in many cases not an easy one,” and “charging enormous feos,’ and giving a serious charge of a Mr. F, H, Muller against tho oifice, The facts are that every Sheriff hi: number of men in arrest ‘out on the limits,” as itis called, and under bonds, Sheriff Conner has been trausierring these as fast as hia assistants can mako out the negessary papers and thereby get rid of so much responsibility, 3o far from 100 arrests having been made this week, not twenty have altogether been transferred since the now Sheriff took charge, and in no case has an overcharge been made, A8 the Sherif 1s responsible fur all those whoso bonds he he takes the care that any prudent man will bonds are satistuctory, There are many bondsmen whvu are bankrupt this year t year were in atlluence, With respect to the case of Muller, the transaction occurred on the 20th of Novem- ber Inst, and consequently not under the jurisdiction of the new Sheriff. The case has never even been trausferred to him. Deputy McGonigle states, how- ever, that Muller was given time to perfect his bonds. but did not do it until very lately, although be had ample time. It was possible in old times, when these five dopu- ties were In the offices, for each item of business, some overcharges may bave occurred, but Mr. Reilly, bim- seit anexperienced old deputy, has altered all that, He has only appointed twenty good men, and as the business of the olfice will give them a good competence he purposes holding them to strict accountability for overcharges, &c, FAIR PLAY, _PIANUFORTES, URGANS, &C UPRIG kati af JARE AND GRAND sule and rent, @ num- 16th GREAT OFFER.—WE WILL, DURING THESE: hard simon, dispose of 100 Pianos and Organs, now and Second hand, of first class makers Gneluain; ") at Tnwer prices for cush or instalinents, or to let Maul pald fore than ever before offernd.
