MENT. NEW YORK FZRALD, THURSDAY, JANUARY Ui, 1877. ‘WITH SUPPLE - AN OLD LANDMARK GONE. [CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.) England before the Revolution, are still kept in the archives ofthe church. A magnificent silvgr chalice and paten tor the communion service, whidh had been Pp resented by Queen Anne, had luckily been removed ‘m the morning Irom the church to the sexton’s resi- dence, where the reporter saw them. They were of Massive silver, and bore only the words *Annw Regi- nw,” with tife imprint of tue maker and the letters A. ‘The total coat of the church was $80, xclusive of the bells and windows. The tront and side walls and the tower are still firm, but the rear wail, being cracked by the heat, will have to be rebuilt. The congregation, numbering about 300, will be com- pelled to use the little chapel, distans about 100 fect, as @temporary place of worship until the main edifice can be rebuut, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL AO BE Ed The Stock Market Alternately Weak and Firm---A Reaction from the Lowest Prices. pa date Bote 106 A 106 1-8. pal IE hi GOLD Money on Call 7, 6 and 5 Per Cent—Government and Railway Bonds Steady. Watt Senaee, Wroyxspay, Jan. 10-6 P.M. Dealings in to-day’s market were boiled down to a concentration of Lake Shore, Western Union and Michigan Central, while the rest of the list simmerea Jike a scum that was unworthy the attention of any- body. The pot wag kept boiling with a good deal of vigor in these three favorites for the most of the day, though the ebullition slackened off about noon, only to be re- newed again toward the time of closing. The idea previously suggested that Lake Shore would Go into mourning for the Commodore's death seems to be shaping itself ito a fact, judging by the depression which hung over the stock this morning aud the “vears in the voice’? of the deluded holders who were busy selling out shares at 54, which they fondly hoped to distribute at twenty potuts higher. Novertueless, ut the end of business a rexction set in under some lively buying to cover shorts, and the @ rallied back to opening figures and firmly closed there, Michigan Contral was simply noticeable for its steadiness and a sturdy refusal to sympathize with its Jugubrious side partner. In fact, the Fidus Acbates connection seems to be dissevered now that Lake Shore has grown in disfavor and that Michigan Cen- tral ig showing an amendment in the reduction of its floating debt and a generaily more thrifty manage- ment, Of the three actives, Western Union proved tobe the top sawyer in the day's business. Over 33,000 sbares changed hands at prices which slowly, but surely, advanced from 727% to 7: The inevitable, tn- separable mystery still haugs about this fancy, like the scent of the roses round the vase in Tom Moore’s ballad: for, though shares were greedily acquired, few buyers could ussign a better basis for their action than that something was going on “inside the com- pany,’? as though the corporation were a human being whose vitals and viscera were regaining abealthful tone after a spell of illness. Although not specially active, the greatest advance of the session occurred in Illinois Central, which fluttered up from 6234 to 64, with a final recession to 6334. It was the old story of scared shorts with small margins, who, baving rushed iuto a gunpowder maga- zine, where richer and more prudent operators have feared to tread, precipitately attempt to rush out again on the first symptoms of an explosion. Ohios und Mississippis were almost completely neg- lected, although favorable reports continue to be made of the business of the road, and hints are thrown out of a projected allianes with the great Baltimore and Ohio corporation, At onetime the St, Paul shares showed considerable weakness under the report of a further dimination of earnings. These statements are likely to come worse than better, as comparisons will be made between the undoubtedly slim business of the coming spring and the very large earnings {rom grain transport made at the corr:sponding season of last year, The report of the probable Interference of United States troops in matters at New Orleans, which came in just at gong sovzd, stiffened yold up to 10634; but was too late to affect the share market, even if it were likely to do so, THE SALKS TO-DAY.
