DISASTERS ON THE DEEP. Unloading the Stranded Steamship . Amerique. THE BARK SCOT’S BOY. Sulferings of a Crew of Landsmen on Her Voy- age from Liverpool. WRECKED IN THE ICE. The Loss of the Perished Passengers. Montgomery—The —__-—_———_ ‘The Iuckless steamship Aimorique is still lying bigh and dry upon the beach at Seabright, N.J., in tho same position’as when she first became fairly fast, and there sbe will in all probability. remain for at loast a month, if not torever. Bright and carly yester- day morning the Coast Wrecking Company’s employés, assisted by the crow, continued the work of securing the vessel from the danger oft being driven further on sbore in case of a strong southeast wind, A Heratp reporter who visited tho scene shortly before noon found the beach lined with spectators from the adjacent country, guzing in wonder upon tho hugo ship so singularly situated. Tho tide was low, and the vessel, lying not more than a couple of hundred yards from high water mark, stood bolt upright with her broudside to the Shore, and bedded in the fino sand almost down to the water line, One could walk out almost within arm’s Jength of the craft without wetting his fect, so little water was there Detween her and the beach, and standinng by her side the gaping rustics gazed upward to the deck as far above as the roof of un ordinary house is above the sidewalk, Looking down over the gpil stood Captain Pouzoulz directing the movements of a portion of the crew at work upon the beach below. Access to the deck of the ship was gained by menns of a bourd seat, or “boatswain’s chair,” sliding upon a hawser, one end of which was made fast to a swncheon upon her quarter deck and the other to the anchor on the beach. The reporter, having obtained permission to go on board, seated himself in the chair aud witha dozen brawny arms bauling upon the tackle was sent flying up the ne at a rate which made his bead swim, On board the vessel everybody except the captain seemed to be perfectly satisfied with the situation and to move very deliverately, A gang ol the Coast Wrecking Company's men were engaged in lowering the topmasts and run- ning rigging to tho deck, and another in haul- ing adoard a mighty hawser, the outer end of which was attached to an anchor susk some distance seaward trom the vessel. This is the third Dhawser now holding the ship from going furthor in- shore, and two others will be added to tho number immediately, The wrecking people buve no Gefinite plan with respect to getting tho vessel afloat, but will lighten her as much as possible, and when the wind ehall blow strong off shore, and the tie shall, atthe same time, begin to tlow out they will bitch on ail the steam tags available and make a grand pull for it, The beach on wuich the vessel lies is a sort of quicksand, and she is so firmly smbedded that it will require un enormous power to Aislodge her. At present she 1s supported evenly wong her whole bottom, aud as the water is perfectly smooth sho is in no immediate danger. Experts who know the coast, however, declare that should a strong wind blow from the southeast the sarf would swirl around the sbip in a sort of eddy and Sweep the sand from uoder her keel at the stem aua the stern, leaving the entfre weigh: to ta'l upon the bottom xinidships, und the vessel in two. Tho general nisitors yesterday was, “she ma do to let her settle too long.” Late in the afternoon yesterday the ship was con- sidered by those in charge to be pretty weil secured from sbiiting, and a whip being rigged from one of her spars and connected with the deck engine the work of removing the cargo was begun, It proved to be very slow work. A sur! boat was rowed around opinion of nautical y get off, but it wou’t w to the ice of the Amerique, and into it were lowered | several casks of wine trom the hold, Then the boat was rowed out to @ lighter, some dis- tance off shore; the wine was hoisted on board, and the boat returned tor another load. 1t was thought that the cargo would be landed upon the beach ava forwarded to this city by the New Jersey Southern Ratiroad, bat it is now stated that a contract bas been made wiih the wrecking company to carry it hither in their inzhters, When the sea is smuoth and the tide high it 1 hoped that the lighters can bo brought di- rectly alongside the ship and so render the work somo- paar ions slow. ‘The cargo is a general one und easy to nde. The schooner W. Connors, of Bangor, Me., nineteen days trom Brunswick, Ga., with a cargo of 150,000 feot of hard pine consigned’ to partics in Boston, was placed on Burgess’ Mare Railway at Red Hook, yesterday morning, she baving reached this port ia a sinking condition on Monday morning. ‘The following ig the Statement of the captym concerning her long and perilous voyage:—"We sailed for tho Kast with a splendid load of Georgia on December 2% After getting well to sky became overcast with lowerip, uds, and a gale sprang up from the wortheast an changed over to the northwest, which continued tor three days. ‘he waves ran almost mountain bigh, ‘The weather was bitter cold, and the spray froze ag 5000 a8 it touched us, rendering it perilous for any one to remain on deck, To add to tho terror of the situation we soon discovered that the deck load of lumber began to shilt, waking it extremely difficult to keep the sbipin trim, and several times we camo near going on our beam ends, ‘After beating around in almost a helptess condition for tweive days, during which we were off Hatteras, we were again struck by a fearful galo 1p latitude 83 deg., longitude 78 deg. 40 min, which swept over- buurd about 15,000 feet of luinber. Thero are few particulars to add concerning the loss of the steamer Montgomery to those forwarded to the Hzraup bast evening. The captains of both the col- ding steamers, however, have mado statements to- day concerning the disuster, which are herewith ap- pended, The statement of Cuptain Winters, of tho Montgomery, is as follows:— CAPTAIN WINTERS’ STATEMENT. The Montgomery steamed away from New York, bound for Havana, at half-past oue o'clock on Saturday, 6th inst, Discharged pilot ut Scotland Lightship, and proceeded on to southward, Wind north northeast and moderate, At eight o’clock P, M. Barnegat light boro west by north, distant nine miles, At eight o'clock A. M. weather thickening and wind hauling more easterly; ship going along very handsomely about nine ules per hour, At ten, wind southeast, At twelve, wind south south- east und [reshening, with raim and fog; Montgomery blowing whistie ouce a minute. At half-past one or thereabouts heard the whistle of a steamer about one point on starboard bow. The helm was put to stur- | board and brought the steamer’s light abeam, then righted, judging all to be clear. In two or three mis- ‘utes the steamer’s red hght showed, coming bead on, when the eogine of the Montgomery was stopped, and in less than two minutes the steamer Seminole struck the Montgomery on her starboard bow about three fect abslt the stem, cutting her through to the foremagt and cutung @ hole in her the whole breadth of the Seminole’s bow, The Seminole | then backed out aud swung alongside, the Moutgom- 'y sinking very fast. [saw there was no chupco or o do apythinug Dut to leave the ship as soon as ible. Ordered all hanus to get on board the other | ship, as the Moutgomery’s deck was to the water then, 1 saw a number obey the order, and thinking all tuat could would do so 1 went forward to take unother lvok. ‘Tbe ships were then soparating. Myvclf and mate then got hold of the Seminole and got un bourd, and found but nine belonging to the Montgomery there before ux, The bout ‘of the Seminole was cleared away aud went for the wreck as soon us possible, and met a bout with seven persons cumming trom the Montgomery. The Seminole’s beat found but three persons in the water, and these were clinging to the bouvm of a boat, Brought thom in and went back for more, but found nothing. Te Montgomery weyg down in less than seven minutes, The boat tWR was cut away wis flouted as soon as the falls and lashings wero cu, ‘Turce persons only got in a tine. CAPTAIN MATTHEWS’ STORY. of the Seminole, makes the fol- ‘On the moruing of the 7th, ut halt | just one o'clock, about forty miles east of Capo May, collided with steamer Montgomery. At the time the wind was from the southeayt, and the weather was thick and rainy, All precaution was taken on the Seminole to avoid the accident, whistle blowing and | engine working ‘uil speed. Lookout reported a light ove point on port bow, aud the wheel was imino- | diately hove to port and beil rang to stop. A lew moments alter a green hgkt was seen coming ucross the bow of the Seminue, If the Montgomery bad portea her wheel instead of starboard, or kept her course, the w nt would not bave occurred. At the time of tue accident several of the crew got on board the Seminole. Alter separating the Montgomery sank | in afew moments. HOW THE RESCUKD MEN WERE CARED FOR. Although it was uot tacumbent upon Messrs. Nicker- fou & Co., agents of the Seminole, they buve provided the men saved from the Montgomery with transpor- tation to New York city and turaisbed them with suit- able clothing to Wear, a8 most of them hud lost nearly all ther clothing. They leit this city for New York to-day, INJURY TO THE SEMINOLE, (he damage to the Seminole will probably be from $2,000 to $3,000, She is now discharging, and carpen- tere will be able soun to make an cautnination of her stem, Which appears badly injured, Had she not been aremarkably strong live oak vessel she too would | doabtiess have gone down and left none to tell the fate | of the steamers.
