The demise of Commodore Vanderbilt, so long ex- pected and, in a measure, feured, from its possible un- favorable effect upon the stock market, was announced this morning, ‘The false intelligence to the same ef- fect, which on more than one previous occasion bad been noised abroad, bad made so little impression on prices, thut the fact was taken as a guarantee that none would happen when the event really occurred. The Stock Exchange had thoroughly prepared Itself by long auticipation and, in street parlance; had discounted tho various contingencies likely to occur, Conse- quently to-day when the report caine in authentic shape upon a market of innate strength and one disposed to ferist, it scarcely caused a tremor of excitement, Lake Shore and Central and Hudson, which are known par excellence a8 the Vunderbilt stocks, halted and re- ceded for a brief time and then returned to the aver- age selling prices of the day. It was evident that preparations had been made, and wore strictly carried out, to bold these securities firmly, and as the bears had boon patiently waiting for many weary months, not to sell more stock, but to cover that which they had already sold, there was no antagonism met with from that quarter. The Twenty- third strect skull and bones party have this time, at least, reckoned without their host, and are no more successful than they were in their gold venture, which they based upon a Republic’s death and “shedding seas of gore.” For Jay Gould, with his long line of shorts, which must have grown musty from ago and the charging up of many dividends, there is no way out of the scrape as yet, but, on the contrary, # fair prospect of his continuing a borrower of the stock for an in, definite period to come. While these remarks are per- tinent as to the immediate effect of the Commodore’s death it cannot be overlooked thatthe event may bave an important bearing upon the future values of the propertics, and particularly of Lake Shore, fhe cool head, farseeing mind, executive sapacity and indomitable energy of Mr, Vanderbilt will scarcely be repiacod by those who step “ip bis shoes; nor can they be expected to, for the con- ‘ation neh rare’ abilities in a single individual {8 oo; \be world’s wonders, and docs not happen over lad wtury, Yo hye gr cs wae added hie great wealth, aud his readiness to app-chry fatter to the support of his sheos anchor Wint', MM ators on either sido of whe accouns Had a hoo Pain of, volt SAP SEUMY be axpe asore will ps8 readily come to irout, or (hat with a divided Ricrest, they will have Gre ane y to do wy, and, sousequently, greater fluctuations aid @ more sanst- dive feeling will be likely to ruie m Central and Hud- On, as well as in Western Union and Lake Shore, in the tuture, The undertone of the market is decidedly firm and the tengency of prices upward, and not the less 30 that one of the disturbing causes was removed jo-day. A satisfactory settlement of the Presidential question would clear the way of aimost the only re- maining obstacle to a more dvaithy and vigorous stock market, Disbursements from banks and other institutions are commencing to be felt in the greater ease of the money market and in the brisk demand for government and railroad bonds, Prices of the best sorts of railroad mortgages are creeping up toa figure that is no longer considered cheap, and consequently those of the second tlase are finding bayers at enhanced values, At the close the market was a trifle offon realizations and through some apprehension that the news of Mr, 4 ne om favorite Pay nen panic threatened was a ed th this sa Vanderbiit’s death might bring orders from out of town parties to sell to-morrow, THE SALES TO-DAY, The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day aggregated 98.890 shares:—New York Central and Hudson, 5,680; Brie, 500; Lake Shore, 36,050; North- western, 400; Rock Island, 500; Pacific Mail, 700; St. Paul, 300; St. Paul preferred, 2,900; Ohtos, 2,000; Western Union, 11,400; Wabash, 200; Panama, 200; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 9,690; New Jer, sey Central, 1,140; Michigan Central, 22,100; Detu- ware and Hudson Canal, 1,300; Illinois Central, 1,250, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICKS, The following table shows the opeuing, highest and lowest prices of the day :— Opening.
