NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1876. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Speculation Still Halt- ing—Prices Irregular. GOLD 107 1-8 A 107. Money on Call 7a4 a 5 Per Cent—Govern- ment and Railway Bonds a Shade Easier. Wat Srreer, } Tuurspay, Dec, 28—6 P. M. Stock operators seem to be agreed that the cream has been pretty well skimmed of the market, for this year at least, and they show little disposition to con- tinue even the milkiug process which has stuod for business during the last tew weeks, Trade, which is only kept going by constant prodding, ts, in the absence of prime speculators, leit to take caro of itself, or moves only ina sluggish way under the manipulation of two penny ha’ penny operators. Consequently transactions are few, fluctuations trivial, and stock weak, To-day hasbeen no exception, and business has yun as low as the Croton in summer, or paterfaml- Nag’ purse in the holidays. The usual morning lift was givon to Lake Shore, which carried it up to 585; the | Intention seéms tobe each morning to cievate the | | quotations of Pacific Railroad bonds:—Union firsts, market to such a point as will give ita good send-off bn the downward track wheu the time comes, some- what us an expert swimmer chooses an e:evation from which to make a success{ul plunge. There was no plunge away, bowever, but a quict fropping away of quotations trom the best figures into the waters of stagnation and neglect. There were more of these characteristics about the market than of positive teebleness, as tne general scope of fluctuations ‘was bounded by limitsof 3, tol percent, and even thése were confined to a few of the more active stocks, Luke Shore, which had given a general encouragement early in the day, soon found a need of help, in turn, faliing, as it did, to 573g, but no help came, and, conse- quently, no improvement of price at the close. At one time Llinois Central advanced to 62 under the covering of u few shorts from Twenty-third sireet, but the im- Provement ceased with the demand, and half of the gain was lost, In the afternoon there was a repetition of the skull and cross-bones gambler, in which Mr, Vanderbilt's tritical condition was mude a pretence for sales of Shore, and Central and Hudson, though little et. fect was produced and no scare occasioned. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company report their net earnings for, six months ending November 30 as equal to 4.73 upon the preferred stock, out of which the two and a half per cent dividend intoly declared will bo paid. Although the statement \g somewhat better than was expected, the stock re- mained unaffected in price, Some little activity was manifested in Mariposa Mining Company shares at ao slight advance, under favorable reports from the mines; this property, being ponsidered, by the older members of the Board at Joast, about as safe to touch asa spitz dog in August, Is not likely to win many admirers just at present. Money was to bo had, for gold and stock carrying purposes, as low as five per cent and as high as seven, coin, the former rate being the closing one, As awhole the market was utterly leatureless, the only sign of excitement being observable when the price of gold fell to and was oflered at 107, under sal by the Osborne contingent. .
