NEW FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. —-+—___ The Stock Market Irregular—Coa!l Shares Higher—Fancies Lower. GOLD 107 3-8 A 107 1- Government Bonds Strong—Money on Call Loans 7, 6 and 5 Per Cent—Rail- way Mortgages Steady. Watt Street, Friar, Dec. 22—6 P, M. Railway bulls pulled long fuces to-day, swore at the ‘Weather, and rogarded things generally through an at- mosphere of wintry discontent. The glorious summer anticipated for their favorites is banked in with clouds aud the hoped for crop of profits shows no nmmediate prospect of maturing in a harvest, The nelarious con- ductof Lake Shore and Michigan Central, with tho attendant satellites of light-timbered fancies, in going down instead of up, hag created the trouble and dis- turbed the placidity of holders. There was a net loss of one per cent on both of the above stocks, and an equa! amount tn Central and Hudson, as a result of the day's work, the heaviness being created by Teports that Mr. Vanderbiit’s condition is very critical and by information from the meeting of freight agents to the effect that these gentlemen have found them- selves entangled in a labyrinth of details out of which ‘they can find no satisfactory issue. fhese, with the recent attempts to realize profits and the closing up of short contracts, have been reasons sufficient to give a set back to the market and render it necessary to do the work for a rise all over again. * The iess important railroads were more successful in resisting the prevailing depression, St. Paul preferred ‘m particular exhibiting considerable strength, with Unusually numerous transactions, Some far sighted observers, who believe they bh: the power of seeing Imtothe middie of next spring, think they discern the misty outlines of a problematical dividend. Their assis- tance in the search for Vulcan would be of infinite benefit to astronomers. The absorbing interest of the day gathered about the coal stocks, which, with their usual contrarlety, persisted in rising, whiie the railroads pur et simple were falling. Thus Delaware and Lackawanna was rushed up trom 715; to 73, occasioning a lively stam- pede among the shorts, The flurry, however, soon subsided and with it the price, which dropped to and closed at 72. The major portion of its strength was due to sympathy with New Jersey Central, which showed unwonted activity {rom the announcement that the company had hit upon ‘‘a new way to pay old debts” and a plan to restore its fallen fortunes forever andaday. Tho scheme is a curious ono, to say the least of it, and runs as follows:—The company pro- poses to issue $3,000,000 ten-year seven per cent cer- Uillcates of indebtedness, convertible into the seven per cent bonds of the Lehigh and Wilkesbarre company at Par, and secured by $5,000,000 of the same bonds Placed in trust for that purpose, Further provision is made for the acceptance of these certificates as a legal tender tor freight bills of the road. Should this project bo carried out the result would , Seem to be the creation of a new debt of $3,000,000, with its attendant $210,000 of yearly interest and the pledging ofan o'd debt of about the same amount in present market value as collateral security, As the Central Road is already bound as guaranteo for the payment of the Lebigh and Wilkesbarre bonds, it does bot appear that much more security is offered than that of their own corporate obligations, It is like the old story of Colonel Jones holding the stakes and the | tnteresting inquiry which followed asto who was to hold Colonel Jones. The company ts to hold the se- curity, but who is to hold the company at that point of solvency that will make the bonds any better than their own LO. U’s? Presuming further (if any one tan be got to take the notes) that the amount obtained Will be disbursed on account of old indebtedness, it is manitest that the cash receipts for tolls will be di- minished just to the extent that these duc bills will be received for such payments, As a matter of information to brokers and dealers in stocks it may be of interest to state, in view of the coming holiday, that all contracts falling due on Mon- day (Christmas Day) stand over and are not payable until the next day (Tuesday), as per ruling of Stock Exchange Governing Committee. As time wears on and the excitement and turbulence growing out of the late election and the consequent squabbie for the spoils of office subside, and the politi- cal situation comes to be regarded from the ‘sober second thought’? standpoint, the assurance that there will be a peaceful solution of the existing muddle begins to exert a salutary influence throughout busl- ness circles, where a much better feeling hes existed of late, as shown by the more steady condition of the markets geuerally, Business was light in nearly every department of trado throughout last week, it 13 true, and even yet the demand for merchandise is very moderate, yet the prosent week opened with a much better promise than the last, and a fair business has been consammated in most of the principal commodi- ties. Dry goods have been aud continue quiet, but the mar- ket is generally steady, while in some departments there hasbeen manifest greater buoyancy and firmuess. This is especially the case with now siylea of both) cotton and woollen fabrics. Hardware is doing fairly for this season of the year, asare also boots and shoes, drugs, olls, wool and most other commodities On ‘Change business has in- creased somewnut during the current week, and full or im- proved prices have universally obtaingd, stimulated in part by the increased rates of trausporta- tion to the seaboard, Flour has been songht after to only ® moderate extent, and prices show some decline as compared with those current « week ago. Wheat hasbeen in moderate demand for the most part, but with u break in ocean freights, Toward the close of the week un active export movement set in, and @ largo business was consummated at improved prices for all de- scriptions, Corn has been in steady, fair demand all through the week past, and prices, though without radical change, have tended in seliers’ favor. The diversion of the corn trade from the three ports of Balthnore, Philadelphia aud Boston, owing to the cheape: of road treights, occasions no ttle = discussion. Some ridicule the idea of New York being injured to am very ap- preciable degree, while others. are more solicl- tous. New York will undoudtedl: in the chief commercial emporium of thi United ¢ but New York merchants should not jut their eyes to the tact thas the jvs above mentioned have bent all their energies past to the effort to cuusé a diversion of commerce from New York in their favor. nor shquid they remain in norance of the fact that they have been purtiaily succe: ful, What with the heavy port charges in years agoi system of vex 8 annoyances to which vessels, pi larly those engaged in the coffee trade, were for 4 subjected, combiued with the fact that railroad fre! been in favor of other cities, New York has suffered very oonelderabir, as Grae mfg tient by the large increase of corn at the three cities of Baltimore, Philadeiphia and Buston, which have prot nearly or quite doubled within the past year, during the week has increased, und the mi udily in favor the well i they are considerably higher than they wi wweek ago. Whiskey has advanced somewhat, bit has ruled quiet. The market for provisious has been erratic all through the week and prices have alternately advanced aud deeling although the market price of bot! lard at tl higher th: mencement. Ovean freights and charte: xperienced @ break, owing to she preverends of favorable winds, which it was foreseen wteriully augment the number of available vessels in the harbor, bat ri declined and the export trade received # decided stimulus.
