NDALL, ES AN AEROLITE FALLS INTO THE OCEAN, [From tho San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 11.] Tho largo number of meteors lately observed in the sky has attracted considerable attention, especia: among scientific men, who are of the opinion that the earth i# passing throagh a belt of these vagrant ultra- terrestrial brickbats whose orbit intersects that of the earth, There is some diversity of opmion regarding the watare and origin of these stones, of which it is calculated at least 5,000 fall upon the carth’s suriace yearly. The theory most widely accepted is that they are bodies of our planetary system that have come pear enough to be acted upon by the earth’s.gravita- tion, and thus drawn out of their orbits, A groat many acrolites have been found, and nearly every scientific institution in the world is possessed of one or more. The largest of which there is any authentic record was found by a Swedish Arctic ex- pedition in 1870 on the west coast of Greenlat It weighs twenty-five tor and is now Academy at Stockholm, seen last Friday nigt Ocean House round. At about 12:45 he noticed a pecaliar light on the sand ‘and sex around him, aud upon looking upward dis- covered What appeared to be an immense ball of fire descending toward the earth. Ite co ag was 80 rapid that belore he fad fairly recovered from aly astonish- mont the mass fell into os es sp mt half amile trom shore A loud “gn wed by & sharp explosion, enon} ‘and. 80 frigntened the horse'which th® reporter was driving that his whole attention tor the next live minutes was directed toward the unruly animal, but he neticed that the tail of the meteor, as it is called, or, more Properly, the combustion occasioned by the im @ mense ‘velocity with which the stone travelled through our atmos; rematued visible for about two minutes, From the brilliancy-and area of the fire surrounding» the failing stone and the splash occa. Sioned by its sudden immersion, it is certam that the aerolite must have been of :mmense size, although, of course, no estimate could be made with avy ge 4 it 1 during the few seconds the aerolite was visibie. to bo rogretted that the stone did not fail on asin that case au unequalied opportunity meteoric formation would have been afforded to the scientists of San Francisco, but as the walter is com: paratively shallow at balf a mile from sbore, ii barely possible that careful dredging might recover the stone, The resistance of the water would prob- , ably check the velocity of the failing body sufficiently to prevent its imbedding itself in the bottom to any great depth, and possibly the stone is simply resting ‘on the ved of the ocean. It 18a good opportunity tor scientific investigation, and if recovered the aerolite would be a great acquisition to the collection of 4 Academy of Sciences.
