DETAILS OF THE LIFE OF AN UNHAPPY YAMILY—HOW ELEMENTS OF DISCORD WERE INTRODUCED—THR STORY OF AN ADOPTED DAUGHTER AND A DISCARDED WIFE—A suIT LIKELY TO TERMINATE WELL FOR TL2 LAW- TEES. Povucuxerrrsig, Dec, 17, 1876, “ Aw stated in @ previous letter further examination in the Parish will case has been postponed till Thurs- day next, before Surrogate Peter Dorland, Previous to the coming fourth hearing it is eminently proper to give additional information which surrounds this re- markable suit. THE PARTIBS CONCERNED. Thomas Parish, deceased, was a young man well known, He was very genial in hia habits, and was surrounded by boon companions, whe basked in the sunshine of bis generosity and who joined with him to many e “lark.” That he aud bis wife Mary did hai serious difficulty early in 1862 or 1863 is, we be- Heve, not questioned, and it is also not questioned that @ young man was thecause of it, and it ts alleged that the wife was not altogether blameless in the matter. This led toa coldness between them, but friends in- terceded, and after a mutual understanding Mr. Parish “let bygones be bygones," and once more tho couple lived happily together tillin 1863, while both were at a ball tm Pine Hail, a scene occurred which again led to coldness between them, and the same young man (then married) was tho cause of it, The sight of him at the ball awakened the old feeling of reproach and bitterness in the heart of Mr, Parish, and as the latter was slightly under the influence of drink, the old feel- ing of hatred showed itself, and, as previously related, Mr, Parish ordered the young man from thw festive scene and he went, and for a few days that sceny was the gossip of the town, The interest in it, however, died out, and again Mr, apd Mrs. Parish became recon- oiled and their domestic biiss remained undisturbed for years, DOMESTIC AND SOCIAL BAWITS. They attended balls and parties together, mado sum- mer trips to popular resorts together, drove and rodo together and together entertained company at their rural home a short distance east of this sity. At times Mr, Parish would take his rod and gun ard make a two weeks’ tour of the Adirondacks, and during his abs sence would write endearing episties home. Tn uimost every leiter he spoke of tho inroad the uso of strong drink was making upon him, and he tirmiy resoived to do better. He wrote her that be woud give up his club room, give up the society of men whom he named in the letters und try and become a useful member of society. AN RLNMRNT OF DISCORD. Jn 1870 the happy house was entered by Miss Susio Hayt, of Newburg, daughter o: Nathaniei Huyt, of that clty. Susie was then between sixteen and seven teen years of ago, modest, unassuuung, gentie natured and of good character, She eutored the Parish family as an adopted daughter, and up to this time the evi- dence thus far taken shows that estrangement, sepa- ragion aud Mate followed ber coming. Mr, and Mrs, Parish agreed to disagree; but it is not known for cer- tain, except amoug tue most iutimate friends of both sides, whether legal papers of separation were drawn or pot If they were one can almost imagine Mr, Parwh using Will Caricton's words to bis counsel Draw, bp the papers, lawyer, ‘And make "ou good and stout; For things at home are crossways, And Betsy and I are out. Auyhow the separation came, and Mrs. Parish wont to her father’s bome ip this city, Mr, Parish ullewed her $2,500 per annum to © On, and also, it is al- leyed, the, use of # horse and wagon. Mr, Parish re- mained at tno farm with ais adopted daughter, now named Susie Hayt Purish, aud shortly alter wont abroad with her a8 a companion, visiting the principal cities of Europe. They also visited Florida and San Franeisco. all this while public opinion was forming, and the separation, the adopted daughter, the ignored wile, and the European, Florida and C: fornia trips became chiel topics of gossip in Pough- keepsie soviety. MR. PARISH’S DEATH BED, Suddeoly Mr. Parish was taken 11i with dropsy at his dwelling on wis farm, His daughter Susie Hayt Parish was constantly at his bedside, not leaving the room night or day. ‘The separated wife sought an in- verview wita the dying mau, but could oot obtain it, It was reported, and, too, with a great degree of au- thenticity, that ‘she ‘did once gain admission to the sick room, but was peremptorily ordered out by Mr. Parish, who was then lying sick in bed. Next camo death and a few day: r the will now in contest was wade known, and thus the bitter fight is opened. Nelson, counsel for James rarish. He desired that tho counsel on both sites should meet at the Nolsyn House in @ room previous to the alternoon session, Tho meeting occurred, and Judge Nelson asked Mr. Thorne, counsel for the executors, if they could nol come to some arrangement. Mr. Thorne had an interview with his clients and with Miss Susie Hayt, and was told that it was too late; that Mr. Thompson bad thrown so much inud at the girl in his opening address that they ‘were now ready to Jaw it to the vitter ead. AN INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR VINTON, OF COLUMBIA COLLEGE—THE HERALD FULLY INDORSED. ‘The interview in yesterday's Heraip with Mr. Albert Hill on the specifications for the wire contract for the Brooklyn Bridge has created considerable excitement amoug cugineers and others interested in mathemat: ics, The attack made by Mr, Hill was no mere Suppo sition, but aclearand lucid argument backed up by figures that could not be controverted, The question was freely discussed during he morning, and people were evidently satisfied that Mr. Hili bad brought to light some glaring errors that required immediate tn- vestigation, as it would be ridicujous to let a contract through specifications so fundamentally jucorrect. With a view to obtaining the very highest scientific opinion on Mr. Hill's statement a Heranp reporter paid a visit yesterday afternoon to General Francis |. Vinton, Professor of Mining and Civil Engineering Schooi of Mim Columbia Coliege, and graduate of United States Military Academy and Evole Lmpéri- des Mines, Paris, The reporter found the Pro- fessor at home, in his comfortable bachelor quarters at the Racket Clab, and, after apologiang to him for moking a business call on Sunday, the following con- versation ensued PROPESSOR VINTON'S VIEWS, Rerorrer—I ave called to ask you, Professor Vin- ton, if you have read the interview with Mr. Albert Hill in this morniug’s Hekarp. Professor Vixtox—I bave read the article, and, with the speciticanons before me, have mvostigated the matter with care, carefully studying giah pulah 80, that 1 have deen able to form a very decided opinion ou the points to which Mr. Hill takes exception. Reroxrek—Will you kindly give the HexaLp your opinion upon Mr, Hull’s work and state whether you belteve Lis deauctions are correct? Proiessor Visroy—With regard to the first point, Which touches on the use of a peculiar formula for the cross section of the wire, | will say that use can be mude of the formula given In the specilications; but 1! will almost necessarily i @ diferent cross section from that ofa wire No. 8, full Birmingham gauge, be- cause the formula used is: based upou the density of the given which is a variable, while Mr, Hill's formula is a formula of constants only. ReroxteR—Wbat do you think of Mr. Hill's state. ment as to the ultimate breaking strength? Mu. HILL INDORSED. Professor Vixtow: agree periectly with Mr, Hill’s that po'nt, and freely admit that the true ngth ol awire No. 8, full Birmingham gauge, 16 3,600 pounds, Kuporter—Now in rogard to the ‘total streteb.” What are your views on that point? Protessor Viytoy—I must admit that after reading the specifications there seems to me to be an absolute incompatibility in the requirements as to stretch thal are presented in different portions of that document. I bad thought at first that there must have Some error that might have arisen in the printing. The formula Mr, Hill bas used, in which the engine: own modulus is applied, 1s, I believe, the getyr! ‘corr formula, and that the stretch determined thereirom it the stretch that is demanded tn paragraph Sof the specifications, whereas under the head of teats an en- tirely different and singularly discrepant stretch 18 do- manded. There also seems to me to be some typo- graphical ‘error in the tigures in the printed intervi im the Heratp, but not in the location of symbols in the formula, which are entirely correct and in accorda- ance with auy treatise I have ever secn for the de- termination of a stretch under a tensile strain, A TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR, To raz Epitox or tHe HeRaLy:— Will you oblige mo by correcting a typographical error tn this morning's edition of your paper? On the seventh page, secoud coluinn, tenth line from top, your reporter's intorview tb me should read, after the words ‘‘we have, foilows:—''1,600 equals 000,000 X divided by 47.2 L; hence X, the total stretch for one foot, equals 1 divided by 17,500 muiti- plied by 47.2, equals 94 divided by 35,000, instead ol”? &e, Respectfully yours, ALBERT HILL Brooxtys, Dec. 17, 1876. FAST MAILS RE-ESTABLISHED, A PIONEER TBAIN TO START THIS MORNING— DETAILS OF THE ADVANTAGES OF THE NEW SYSTEM. The pioneer labor of the Heraup in reducing the running time between important points along the Hudson River and New York Central Railroad, and delivering the Herap abead of the slow mail trains, ts still bearing its fruit, The force of example was weil illustrated in the work of the Post Office Depar* ment last year in establishing fast mails to the West via the Pennsylvania Rajiroad and the New York Cen: tral Railroad, and this morning another tast train wit make an essay to reduce the time between this city and Washington by three hours and fifteen minutes, Details of the plan for this last experiment in fast trains appeared exclusively in the Hematp a few days ago. It differs very materially from the fast mail system of last year, which was abolished owing to the parsimony of the govern- ment, in that the former was intended to benedt cities ulong the line of two railways ouly, while this is in- tended to be the inception of a system that will bring the Kust und South in closer connection. Of the trauma between this puiut and the West it is not necessary to sj ‘The on@ that now attracts attention ty the fast train that leaves with to-day's Heraip from Jersey City via the Pennsylvania Raiiroad at 4:30, and arrives in Washingwn at 1:02 P.M. The prosent service between this city and Washington consists of traps leaving bere ut 8:40 A. a. and 9 P. M., arriving atthe capital at 6:37 P. M. an. A. The 4:30 train, that be comes the pioneer this morning of tho new system, Mr. R, C. Jackson, superintendent of the Rallway Mai) Service, reports will be avery important one for the Southern seaboard cities, It takes tne place of tb: old limited mail, but its chief connections are at Alex. andria, with the Southern railroad lines From that point can be rapialy distributed to all the sea coust cities the mails from the Kastern and Central Staves that now centre in Washington, as well as foreigs mails, destined for the South, arriving w this city. Another advantage of this train it that it makes close connections with the Hos ton express, vie Willimantic, Hartlord and New Haven, that leaves Boston the previous nigit at To’clock. This New Englund express comet ladened with wail matier from all the New Engianc States, and ull the through bags for the South will be despatched {from Washington several hours advance of the previous arrangement. By it the Heratp this morning will reach Newark at 4:63 A Rabway at 5:11 4. M., Princeton Junction 6:57, Trenton at 8:07, wy cat Philadeiphia at 7:05, Baiti- moro at 11 ea ie aud Washington ut 1:02 P, -» &8 formerly.
