FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Speculative Activity in the Stock Mar- ket—Prices Firmer. GOLD 107 1-2 A 1075-8 A 107 8-8 A 107 1-2. Government Securities Firm and Higher—Rail- way Bonds Steady—Money on Call Loans 5 and 4 Per Cent, Wau Starner, } Trvrspay, Dec. 14—6 P.M. The Board room {s scarcely as fragrant us Hymet- tus, and brokers in these dull times can hardly bo likened to busy, bees, worse luck for them, still they are quick “to improve each shining hour;” in this view they sucked honey to-day from the orders cre- ated by the lively speculators in Lake Shore. Perbaps they were more like flies arout a sugar barrel and less tike pecs in a hive, in that their labors benefited nobody but themselves and the stock gam- | blers who employed them. At any rate, a very lively business grew out of tho situation, and at times the txcitement reminded one of the “brave days of old,”’ when at this season of the year trade was brisk and brokers had their ‘‘pockots full of money and cellars tall of beor,”” Favorable reports, backed up by good buying, and faith in promises of higher figures, sown broadcast, together with a garden tull of bears, more or less slspmed, caused the price to advance this morning trom 673; to 5814, without a eet buck, though it lost about half of the gain at the close. Ma waa further assisted by fresh reports of a settle- meént« railroad difficulties, which received additional forew fn the fact that Mr. Garrett, the prosident of the Baltimore and Obio Railroad, had arrived in the city with the object of a conference with Mr. Vander- bilt, The mountain having refused to goto Mahomet Mahomet bad come to the mountain, and the meetiug | was to be pregnant with auspicious events, i Central and Hudson, on transactions of about 6,000 shares, influence’ by the same causes, moved up from 1054 to 106%, but dropped back im the afternoon to 100, To a less degree the remainder of tho tailway list was benofited by the strength of the Vanderbilt spe- eialties, but presented no indi@dual features of inter- est, New Jersey Contral seems to bave fallen into a den of thieves, or at least into the hands of some unscru- pulous speculators, who are endeavoring to steal protits through the medium of bogus telegrams. A second attempt for the week was made to-day, in the sbape of a despatch from Newark, N. J., to the effect that Mr. Knight, president of the road, had appeared before Chancellor Runyon for the purpose, it was surmised, of applying for the appointment of a receiver, As Mr. Knight was not gifted with the faculties of Sir Boyle Bochis’ bird, of boing in two Places attho same time, and as it was discovered ho had ever left Philadelphia, and, consequently, couldn’t be in Newark, the fraud became palpable, and was ex- Posed almost as soon as perpetrated. The effect was, however, to drivo the stock down from 3434 to 3314, from which it subsequently rallied to 33%, closing at 33%. Telegrams trom Washington quote the Secretary ofthe ‘| ‘Treasury as saying, in explanation of the shipment of $10,000,000 of 41; per cent bonas beyond the original subscription, that it was due to the very tavorable es- timation in which United States securities are hela Qbroad, and he further thinks that a European war would open the way toa speedy placing of the entire oan, Gold has remained steady during the day, opening and closing at 10734. There were no withdrawals from the Bunk of England to-day to affect it, and the pas- Sage of the Silver bill by the House under the pros- peet of it being rejected by the Senate, or at least vetoud by the President, tailed to produce any result. ‘The Silver bill docs not appear to be looked upon ‘with favor by the street. Apart from the doubjful policy ot a dual standard it fosters infi::tion to the extent of an ieaue of silver dol- Jars without a corresponding retirement of greenbacks, And sets up as a standard a commodity entirely lacking ‘stability aod one which during the current year bas shown greater fluctuations in value than any or all of the baser metals, THE SALES TO-DAY, The transactions to-day aggregated about 96,000 shares, which were distributed as follows:—Now York Cen- tral and Hudson, 4,970; Erie, 12.600; Lake Shoro 88,800; Northwestorn preferred, 400; Rock Island, 2,970; Pacific Mail, 2,600; St Paul, 1,000; St Paul preferred, 7,6C0; Obios, 800; Western Union, 6,100; Wabash, 1,600; Union Pacific, 100; ©.
