NEW ‘yoRrK HERALD, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1876. —TRIPLE FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘The Stock Market Feverish and Irregular. SOLD 109 5-8 A 109 7-8 A 1093-4. Money on Call Loans 2 Per Cent—Railway Bonds Generally Firm—Governments Steady. Watt Srrxzt, Tacsvar, Nov. 16—6 P.M. } For another day Lake Shore has been a Chinese puzzle to the Board, and there being no Celestial handy to construe it, even into pigeon English, !t re- mains Greek to everybody but the wirepullers them- ‘elves, There was a recovery trom the 55 polnt of yesterday, the quotation reaching 563 shortly after midday, again-receding to 553, and closing at the highest Qgures, Of why and wherefore cach one has an bypothesis, but nobody possesses facts, and in this tage nobody is the wiser, as one cau can ‘go it blind” on either side of the account without being bothered for reasons, which, aiter all, is as safe as any other way. At one time the Board was treated to a scesaw, Lake Shore rising and the Granger stock rapidly fall- ing ut the same moment, It was then universally con- ceded that the favorite was wonderfully strong, and at the ciose of business no reason was seen to change this opinion, Not so much can de said of the Western ana St. Paul stocks, which act as though their figures were clothes, aome sizes too large for prosent values, and they were sbrinking them down to fit, Thus the Northwestern fell from 34% to 32% und 587 to 57%, a8 they were common of preferred, aud closed a shade botter. The Bt Paul shares having been undergoing the shrinking process for some time back were less disturbed to-day, but, nevertheless, lost ground, and finishea. below open- ing prices. The granger stocks are not suffering ap- parently from ary special difficulties other than those pf diminished and remunerative trade, but are simply going to the bad with Obio, Wabash, C.,C. andl. ¢., Erie and other light timbered tancies whieb are hope- jess in respect to dividends and an incubus upon the bands of hoidera, Hopes of reformation were enter- tained so long as the future of trade looked encourag- (ng; but now that this anticipation has bee: foned for this fall, at least, they are beimg voted tbe black sheep of the stock list, and abandoned by all former trienda, In this connection, however, it is due to the @Obio and Mi ippi road to say that the company positively deny the report about a receivership and state that the January interest will bo duly payt, Transactions 1n Western Union and Pacific Matl have been very limited at prices making but little variation. The latter stock remains stcady and strong under the action said to have been taken intne meeting of di- Fectors yesterday, which puts the line on equal terms with the Panama Transit Company in respect to tolls over the Panama Ratiroad. Railway bonds were quiet and steady, with an im- provement inthe Ohio and Mississippi issues, based ‘pon denial by the company of untavorable reports. At the close prices were a shade better under the (fluence of foreign telegrams, which were sonstrued Jo be of a less peaceful nature. ‘THE SALKS TO-DAY. ‘The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day Weregated 189,110 shares:—Erie, 700; Lake Shor 0,580; Northweqyern, 8,700, do. preferred, 5,700; Rock Island, 1,940; Pacific Mail, 2,500; St. Paul, 11,200; fo, preferred, 20,850; Obios, 5.250; Western Union, 8,500; Wabash, 800; Delaware, Lackawanna and West- ern, 2,300; New Jersey Central, 5,800; Michigan Cen- tral, 12,200. (ddreas COMPAN ¥, box 2114 Herald office, Reve ss NEW YORK TAXATION. New York, Nov. 15, 1876, To tae Epitor or tuk Heratp:— In looking over to-day my tax bill for 1876 and com- paring it with one of. 1869, when we were under the happy Tweed réyime, I find serious cause to reflect, aud consider if we aro not worse off now than theo. For tnstance, the valuation of property in 1869 was $684, 183,018; in 1876 it tw $82,423,163. Now, is there anybody who can say that nis real ostate is worth as much, or even within twenty per cont, now of what it was in 1869; or havé such improvements been made since 1969 that New York real estate is worth $200,000,000 more? I for one am puzzled, and shall bo pleased to be enlightened on this point. Now, looking further, I tind there 1s not @ single item of expenditure that h od since then. On the contrary, the expe FO $21,000,000 and now over $31,000,000, Can it be that we population has ii ereased so much in these few years as to make the: $10,000,000 more expenditure necessary? If such 1s Se it is certainly no wonder that trade ts ata stand- still, as there is not a merchant or wochanic that bas derived any benefit trom the increased population, but, om the contrary, more taxation hus been heaped upon him. Ni Mr. Editor, I woa' ‘guing this subject in knowing that you fiud in imvostigating any ba ‘thing that may lead to the public good | would kindly ask of you to compare your tax bills as! have done, and I think we can interest the taxpayers of our city to such an extent that our city government will at loast awaken to the fact that although we pay our taxes willingly wo are not asleep to their actions, and that we have some right to ask that the same do- gree of hemos m should pervade them that it does now say thatlam not begga to overy merchant, mechanic or capitalist. Yours very truly, OM. 8. MARRIAGES AND DEATHS, MARRIED. CaRriisua—Corrix.—At Nantucket, Mass., November 13, 1876, by the Rev, N, A. Haskell, Groros Listen Cana, of gray by N.
