Railroad Bonds Quiet—Government Bonds Steady—Money on Call 3 and " 2 1-2 Per Cent. q Wat, Street, } Farivar, Nov. 10—6 P.M. ‘The coal stocks, which have been lagging behind for some time back, were whipped into activjty this morn- ing and set jogging down hill ata lively gait, as though to catch up with the rest of the market. The journey carried Delaware and Lackawanna from 18% to 715, and New Jersey Central trom 35 to 323;, and was brought to. an end for the day at only a shade detter figures, Whip ang spur were applied by the Osborh-Milis party through the medium of free sales, while an additional goad was used in the shape of re- ports that the New Jersey road was again hard up for ready cash, With some truth apparently, for sales of its convertible bonds were made trom 84'to 81, and with 2o great eagerness to acquire them at that, In the railway shares the market opened with a sharp decline and closed with another, there being in- serpolated in the interim a moderate rally, like a thin piece of meat inasandwich, The St. Paul stocks still continued im their wonted fecbleness, though their symptoms, as exhibited by a decrease of only $49,000 tor the first week in November, were better than had beon expected. . As usual, Lake Shore was the trysting place of the great crowd of speculative admirers, and at times most of the business of the room was centred there, creat- ing rapid fluctuations and large transactions, though brokers are inclined to toucn the stock gingerly, tor fear the pie may be indigestible, now that Jay Gould has a finger in it. Michigan Centra’, as a matter of course, followed the upy and dowfs of the favorite, and like the Sjame twins, stuck closer than an ordinary brother to its varying fortunes. There was not the seme luck, how- aver, for the unhappy Ohio and Mississippi shares, for they ovtained no support, fraternal or otherwise, but were delivered over into the hands of the Philistine shorts, who even at the present low figures continue to smite them with further contracts. There are ugly rumors prevalent which prophesya default in the January interest, deciare an inability to provide for maturing loans, and proclaim the existence ofa float- ing debt amounting to a million or more of money. The common stock sold down from 8 to 7 without rally at the close, while. tho iniection crept into the second mortgago issues, which sold in cynsiderablo quantities at 4934 regular and were offered at 3 per vent lower on option of sixty days. Jn miscellancous shares there was only a moderate business, the furtive Nubians failing to make an ap- pearance in Western Union and the Pacific Mail peo- ple lying at anchor with firos banked until an oppor- tunity offers to got steam up again. ‘Taking the market for ail in all there was but little interest taken in speculation to-day, and the declining prices show that operators do not want that interest OPENING, HIGHEST ANP LOWEST PRICKS, The following table showg the opening, highest and lowest prices of the day:— Opening. Fruvay, Nov. 10—6 P. M. Business marts, in common with every other place, have been so surcharged with political excitement during the past week that almost the entire mercantile public bas been practically mcapacitated for doing business, and by consequence almost every description of merchandise has been neglected and the markets are at aco te standstill ‘he steadiness every- whore exist!™g, however, affords complete assurance that mercantile matters were nover before 80 little dis- turbed bya Presidential election, while the gloomy prognostications of ihe demagogues have been com. pletely refuted by absence of depression or anything akin to @& panic im commercial circles. Tho tact is, business and politics have come to be so completely discounected that, no matter which particalar party may be in favor or in power, the mercantile affairs of the country will run along in the same old groove without let or hindrance. Demand and supply are far more potent in coma jal circles than politics—and thisisasitshould be.
