FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Dull and Irregular-—Busi- ness Interrupted by Politics. GOLD 109 8-4 A 109 7-8. Government Bonds Firm and Active—Railway Bonds Quiet and Steady—Money on Call 3 and 2 Per Cent. Watt Sraser, } Saronvay, Nov. 4-6 P. M. Three powerful foes, the election, the Jerome Park races and the Wall street politieal meetiug, made war on activity in stock circles to-day, and vanquished it completely. From one o'clock to half-past two the ball was literally cleared out of operators, as though the political meeting bad been a species of Hercules and the Board an Augean stabie, which in- deed in many puints it resembles. During this period the entire transactions aggregated but 300 shares, while the whole day’s business did not exceed 5,000, or about one-quarter of the usual average. This sparsity of business presents a very weak text fora very slim sermon, which 1s necessarily confined to the notice of Lake Shore, Western Union and the Ohios as the only stocks which survived @ parturition of dul- ness and possessed life enough to draw a speculative breath, The inhalation, however, showed consider- able vitality, for prices kept well ap In Lake Shora.and Western Union and closed strong, though there was no ald to be had for the former this side the race meet- ing and no interest attracted to the latter, which ts very much of a white elophant just now on the hands of its proprietors. The holders of Obios seeem to be in alike category and exhibit symptoms of elepbantiasis of the same virgin hue, but with a étrong disposition to get out of the bargain, as was shown by the tree sales of the stock from 1075 down to 9%. This security appears to be one more addition to the {ist of railroad fizzles, which, dying s lingering death under the cancer of a hopeless floating debt and dimin- ished ousiness, is sinking juto the grave of unfortu- enterprises. In the remainder of the list there was scarcely movement enough to furnish quotations, and fluctua- Hons were of the smallest description. ‘TRE SALES TO-DAY. che tramyactions at the Stock Exchange to-day ag- fregated 55,000 shares:—New York Central and Hud- ton, 446; Erie, 500; Lake Shore, 18,500; North- western, 100; do, preferred, 1,800; Rock Island, 400; Pa- fific Mail, 800; St, Paul, 1,900; do, preferred, 2,800; Obios, 11,825; Western hang 12,870; Wabash, 2,500; Union Pacific, 100; C., C. and I.
