THE SCHARFE-MORRIS BOAT RACE, A GRAND SCULLING RACE ON THE UPPER MONONGAHELA RIVER COURSB—SCHARF¥ THE WINNER IN THIRTY-FIVR MINUTES YIFTY-THREK SECONDS—GREAT EXCITEMENT AMONG THE MINING POPULATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. PrrrspunG, Pa., Oct 21, 1876, A creat stroggle for the championship of America and a purse of 000, between William Scharf and Evan Morris, took place this afternoon over the Upper Monongahela River course, ana proved to be what it was predicted to be, the finest and most exciting scull- ing race ever witnessed upon American waters, No match between any oarsmen of prominence has created sucha fever of excitement or’ brought out such ® flood of money ‘since the determined straggie between George Brown and Morris at St, Jobn’s, when the former won by # scant seven feet, and, it is believed, hastened bis death by his tremendous efforts, ‘That race, it is also said, told on Morris, for many of his warmest friends have never considered him the Tower since that he was previous to it. A more per, fect specimen of physical manhood never stepped into a shell boat than this same man Morris this afternoon, and though odds on his chances of winning ranged from 100 to 80and 70, yet he smiled confidently and had tirm faith m his powers to achieve victory. On the other hand, Scharf and his partisans liad th: longest purses, und had be failed to win the race this aiteruoon, it is said that the inbabilants south of Pittsburg, of which place he 1s a resident, would have been reduced tow state of beggary. Workingmen in glass aud iron manutactorics drew upon employers for ery penny they had in tue shape of wages standing to their eredit, and put it 10 the best advantaye by risking tt on’ the tull, sallow-complexioned stripling who i6 their aquatic ideal, For two years they luoked forward 10 this day aud made provision for it, ‘The men Were sure to mneet, and Morris, in the enthusiasm of a Victorious rowing career, manifested readiness to get on, but the cool, calculating people of the South Side Would not accede to any proposition for meeung uutil their nan wus in every way it to do his best, ‘This time came about a month since, THE CHALLENGE, Scharff challenged any man in the country, and Morris at once took him up, wnd agreed that he should row tor # purse of $1,000. Ata subsequent inceting tho stakes were tncreased to $2,000, and the men Went into active training for the race. ‘The boat houses of the Clipper and McKee clubs, pro- vided with all the comorts of home, were moored on either side of the river at tho’ starting point of the course, and hero preparations for the struggle were made, ‘The part of the river selected was that over which Walter Brown and Coulter rowed, except that the starting point Was some 200 rods further up the streara, and the turning poivt more than a quarter of a mule further up. fhe course was meusured by the amen themselves and their trainers und representatives of backers, and iound full five miles. A more beautiful day for 4 race could not have been selected, The river was without a ripple and the slanting rays of the Octo- ber sun were refleeted like a mirror on the suriace of the stream, The crowds thut lined the bauks of the river, the hillsides and tho various craft on the water were unprecedented. Indeed, it seemed that the entire South Side had “knocked off? work for the day and turned out to see him win, It was the quickest pulled race that has ever taken place in this country. THE CONTKSTANTS. About aquarter aiter four o’ciock there was load cheering at the McKee club, and Scharif was seen to paddle out leisurely toward the starting stake. He wore # light pink shirt and short knee breeches, Weighed 155 Ibs, and pulied ma paper sheil, It wasa preity cratt, weighing 321bs., over $0 foet in length and 114, inches width. Morris’ soon followed, and was greeted lustily by his friends. He rowed a dainty Spanish cedar boat, Dunit in this city, and about o: the same dimensions as his opponent's. His colors were a red shirt and trunk, and he weighed 160 Ibs. THK START. A very litile time was lost in getting into line, as both were anxious to get away. Several false starts wero made, and at last the stem of cach boat was dead even. The word was given and they were off Schartf jumped to the Jead by half a boat's length, and betore they bad got fifty yards was nearly threc- quarters of a boat’s length in advance, Morris was Towing a quick, powertul stroke, about thirty-eight to the minute, while Scharff beld his own at thirty-six. THE RACK. : Betore the City Poor Farm was reached Morris drew Upon bis antagonist, and directly in front of tis Duiluing was seen to be leading by halt a length. At the turn tn the river at this point both men seemed to be throwing the whole strength of their composition into cripping blades, One held the advantage gained over the otber, and recovered that which wus lost, and thus they went up the river, crowds running along the banks yelling like so many war Indians, while a Score of tugboats were shrieking with thelr steam whistles, fodowtng 1 the close wake of the oursman. At Coal Mipple, two miles up, Scbarifstragglea hard for tbe jead, and secured it in the shape of a half boat's length, though Morris did not yield Without a desperate struggle. Here they were at tho turning stake, which the voats reached together, and from the start neither bad ever been twenty-five feet abead of the other, Scharff whirled bis shell around as if 1 ware on a pivot, while Morris made an awkward turn aud seemed bothered. Here it was that the race was lost aud wou, ior tue lead of a boat's length winch Schari! yot was never remained. He straightened up und shooting away for bowe at the speed of a swilt racehorse he seemed aetermined never again to go to the rear, He was now rowing a beuutiful, tony, swinging stroke, and pulled clean through the water at the rate of 3210 the minute, while Morris rowed powerfully at 34. Down they came toward the starting point,’so closely together that it was anybody's race yet, apd huddled together untit only those oo the shore opposite could dixcern which had the advantage at the,City.Farm, Morris made one more grand eflort to recover his lost boavs tength. Setting Limselt to work, be ran the stroke up to 38, and the shell fairly flew through the water. ‘they now were but # short dalf mile from the Winuer's line, and the excitement ou the banks of the river and on the boats was tdeseribuble. It thougnt that be would yet get the lead, but seemed equal to the emergency, for he bent to his ours, «then there: was seen some of the best sculiing of the century. The race was very rapid, and though it had been so from the first it dia not abate one grain of its vigor unlit Scharif sbot over the 1mag- inary winning line a boat’s length in advance, the win- ner of the championship and the $2,000 in the very fust time of 35m. & “SIDE PARK. NINE MASKED DESPERADOES BOARD 4 SCHOONER, OVERPOWER AND ROB THE CREW—THEY MAK THEIR ESCAPE IN THE FOG. Another daring act of piracy was committed on Long Island Sound, between Riker’s Island and Collego Point, one-eighth of a miie from shore, on Friday night last. Nine masked pirates boarded a small coasting schooner, and with loaded revolvers pilfered the vessel andcrew, None of the latter were injured. The des- peradoes got but a comparative small booty, the en- Ure property stolen not amounting to more thau $300, The name ofthe vessel plundered is tho Joseph Marsh, 8 200-ton coasting schooner, hailing trom Port Jefferson, L. 1. At the time of the occur- Tence she was proceeding to Jersey City, after deliver” ing a cargo of coal at New London, Al a quarter before twelve o'clock on Friday night she rounded to and dropped anchor in Upper Flushing Bay on account of the tog, which was unusually thick. ‘The crew consisted of the Captain, Joseph 8. Brown; mate, J. C. Campbell; William Saddler, the cabin boy, and William R, Hunt, a passenger and part owner of the schooner. Immediately after coming to anchor the Captain, Mr, Hunt and the boy turned in, leaving the mate on watch, The latter sat down on the step of thecompanionway and began reading a newspaper by the aid of tho bin- nacio light, He bad beeo in this position but a tew minutes when he was startled by some person setzing him from belind aud placing the muzzle of a pistol close to his eur, He shouted for assistance, which Drought the Captain to bis fect A moment afterwur d bine dusky figures, bolding one and two revoivers each, rusbed into the cabin Lurliug the mate down be- fore them and blocking the companionway. Tbe desperados were all disguised with handkerchiefs tied around the lower part of their faces, leaving the upper parts exposed. They were of ull sizes, two being quite small in stature; the leader being tall and slim, and the others stoatiy built and muscular. They were barefooted, and all aressed in dark clothing of rather good texture. On rushing into the cabin the leader shouted ina tone of determinaticn, brandishing bis pistol to give emphusis to bis words, “All we waut is money and Valuables and no ropes or togs. Theo first man that resists will be shot dead |’? The gang then separated in pairs, two seizing each of the crew, the Binth one going on deck to keep wateb, The first vic- tim robbed was the Captain, in whose pockets they found a few dollars, Not satistied with this they pro- cvoded to divest him of bis clothing, searching each article thoroughly as they took it off, In the inside vest pocket they found $25 in bills, whieh they appro- printed, During tbe search the Captain resisted, whereupon one of the pirates seized a bianket from tho bunk anu threw it over his bead, while tbe oth mutiered menacingly, striking’ hun at the sume time in the face with his revolver, “Keep still, or Vil blow your brains oat!” The mate ‘proved a less remunerative victim, only $7 being found on bis person, Mr. Hunt, the passenger, suffered most, ho having $100 in his vest pocket, which the robbers seized upon, together with his watch, The latter is a gold hunting case, No, 7,078, C, Faivre Perrin, maker, and valued at $150. The cabin boy was then searched, the avaricious thieves not sparing a five cent nickel which comprised all the youth's earthly possessions. The only other articles of value tound which they cared tor were » double barrelled shotgun and two suits Of clothing. These they seized upon, On the crew emergtvg trom their temporary prison they signalled tor assistance, which soon brought a tug alongside. The fog was still heavy, ‘wo schoon- ers lying near by were quickly boarded, aod tho story told, but none of their crow bud witnessed anything suspicious, Yesterday morning this vessel weighed anchor and proceeded to her destination off Communipaw ferry. Last night Cuptain Brown, accompanicd by Mr. Hunt, called at Police Headquarters aud related their adven- ture to Inspector Speight, The latter, alter taking a description of the men and property stolen, placed the case in the hands of detectives, Subsequently Captain Brown called on Captain Murray, of the Fourth precinct, and gave » miaute description of “Bristol Bill,” who is believed to be ono of the river He is aescribed as having Captain FILES.
