v0 _NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1876 Fah SHEET. THE XHIBITION. Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washing- fon at the Great Show. THE SECOND GREATEST DAY. Qver One Hundred Thousand People Witness the Tournament. Receptions of Governors Carrull and Cochran— Gallant Knights and Lovely Ladies, Puinapetruia, Oct 19, 1876. With tho single exception of Pennsylvania day, Whereon tho attendance reached the high number bf 274,919, to-day has been the greatest, im point | Bumber, the Exhibition bas had. At ten o'clock 141,171 paying visitors bad entered, and the whole umber will probably be founa to be 160,000. It should be borne in mind, however, that to-day visitors from three State:—Virginia, Delaware and Maryland-- and the District of Columbia were represented. In the histories of Virginia and Maryland the day was the anniversary of two very notable events. Tho surren- der of Yorktown on the 19th of October, 1781, makes the day an interesting one to Virginians, while the burning of tho vessel ’'eggy Stewart, frelghted with tea, in Anvapolis Harbor, Maryland, October 19, 1774, ves the Marylander the privilege of alluwing the bird an extra scream. Certainly, never since the opening of the Exposition have so many reconstructed Confederates been within its domains, Moving amid the crowd a Northeruer Would at once be struck with the different shades of peculiar Southern dialect that greeted his cars on all ides, and his mind would inevitably revert to the his- torical hospitality of “Ole Virginny”? in ante-belium days whenever he witnessed the many hearty welcomes be- Detween friends trom different sections of Maryland, the District and Virginia. There was another siriking peculiarity about to-day’s multitude. It would be sate to wager that never bus the Exhibition entertained more “gemmen” who rejoiced im military handles to their names, A brick thrown in the air would be sure to fall . on she head of a “Kernel” or Major, a gentleman who, like Colonel Starboitie, bad lost all ‘but that honnab 1n the lute Wah, sah ;'all, sah!” Iwas very much amused at one Southern leman who entered one of the narrow #auge railroad cars. He was a pertect type of the rginia farmer. who had foliowed, no doubt, the varying fortunes of Uncle Bob Lee. HE LOOKED THE COLONEL, He stood on the plattorm for some time, and finally yelled to a boy standing pp near by-—"*Look yeah, boy, whar’s this kyar gwine? Is tbis yeah a second class kyart’? Boiug assured {t was not be plumped into a eeut beside a negro and maintained an aristocratic silence throughout tho entire trip. The New Yorker who saw the crowds which gath- erod ulong the East River trout to witness the Hell Gate blast can form some little idea .of the extent of the multitude which covered St. George's , Hill to-duy. THe KNIGHTS. All the participants in the tournament assembled on the Stuck Yurd grounds this morning, mustered and iuily equipped tor practice, and engaged i some taucy Tiding, to the adniiration of a great mass of spectators inside and outside the enclosure. Colonel Cuion” Knight, a boy of titteen, rode an y little more than waist high, and tor boy he did very well, Colonel Clarence M. J, Stewart, of Baitimore, :ormerly editor of the Baltimore American, ns the orator of the day, who delivered « very eloquent auaress, THX TILT BEGUN, At the conclusion of Mr, Stewart’s remarks the Knights rode dewn the lists and took thor places. At ‘actly hulf-past two P. M. the heralds stationed them- elves iu the course below the tirst arch, and the chief marshal, Colonel Suit, gave the order, “Sir Knights, pepare to charge.” A tew moments after the words “korward, charge!'’ were heard, the heralds wounded the charge, and the. Knight of New Hampshire, in modern civihan’s dress, but with a broad’ red sush across his body, dashed down the Jists, with his horse on a dead rao be struck all three mags with his lance and knocked them from their places. ‘Two of them dropped to tho garth, the third was caught on his lanve, and as be rode vack in front of the judges he received a round of applause and scored one ring. The Knight o1 Massachusetts followed. He was un- ortupate in his stecd, for after riding through the first ‘ch, and nearly carrying olf the ring, his horse shied 4 ran out of the course, relusing the second and ird arches. ‘hode Isiand’s knight followed. He carried one but was carelesy enough to bear too abort a lance, he held 1 too near the point and not atthe As toe rules of the tournament require, The judges ruled hun out accordingly. ‘Tke charge was sounded for the Connecticut knight betore the three rings were in proper piace, He sin nied and obtaiped another ride, aud scored one. Tee Knight of New York rode gallantly aud well, Hep acing all three rings, but impaling only ono on #8 sance, scored only one. Poansylvania followed, scoring one alsa. His lance jit>loced the rewt of the first ring, and he was allowed be )4e again, Now Jerscy, a fino horseman, In a handsome blue jrimaned Diack velvet suit, showed excellent horseman- jhip, riding faster and easier than his competitors who qed preceded him. He carried off two rings, boing the iret to wjn that honor. ihe Kasgbttrom Delaware, apparcntly aware that the ayes of Doluware were upon him, rode at a slow pact Shat was barely within the rules, and carried off all dorce rings, His prowess was rewarded with a roand © ©/ applause from 25,000 throats, j ¢ ; 5 ‘ f { *y { f \ rae Carolina one, The satter knight, Maryland carried off one ring, Virginia one and a handsome, trapped young man, rode up to the Judges and to ride again at the two last rings, a8 his lapce val got bung at the first. “You should not have tilted at the second and third, Why did you not drop the point of your lance?” anded a judge. “That would not be knighly, sir,” was the response, yiveh won him a round of applause, but did not ex- yore his violation of tho role. THK UKST HORSRMAN. South Carolina’s knight, Mr. Jarboe, of Princo rge’s county, Maryland, exhibited the best horse ean that had yet been'seou. His time was much apy of the others, riding the course in 10 pin } yet So steady Was Lis puise of the lance that he secured wil three rings and a round of applause, much better doverved than the Delaw knight re- ceived after the same feat. Georgia, the last of the thirteen States, made a miss, The Knight of the Union, Colonei Suit’s son, a boy of about thirwen, nding awoite pony, rode slowly but poorly and scored nothing. The Centennial Knight, wade two, Fngs, but carried altogether Peuvsylvania’s representative, who had been al- ‘owed another tilt, now rede forth again, but the il uck with wret he’ bad begun was destined to last brougbout the tourney and be scored nothing. Mrs, Louise M. Pomeroy, who appeared with success as Juliet last Monday at the Lyceum Theatre, per- formed Pauline in “The Lady of Lyows” 1st night, She appeared to mere advantage as Pauline than as Juliet, for the charactor ts less exacting. The tragedy of Bulwor is different from that of Shakespeare, and the laay profited by the opportunity. In the more delicate parts of the drama Mrs. Pomeroy was very agreeable, but she again failed in the expression of force and’passion, But hor Pauline was intelligent and earnest, und the effect justified the experiment, Mr. Lingham’s Claude Melnotte was a deciuea improvement on bis Romeo, und Mr. Welsh Edwards, Mr, Jordan, Mr, August Pivou und Mmes. Jordan and Prior were ex: cellent. STZINWAY HALL—CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT. ‘The firss concert of the New York Mozart Club, an organization entirely composed of the leading mem- bers of Theodore Thomas’ orchostra, took place last night at Steinway Hall, It was the first attempt in many years by a band of virtuosi to give the highest order of instrumental music in proper form. There were wwo works of chamber music on the bill, the B2othoven quintetto in E flat for plano, obve, clarionvt, bassoon and born, opus 16, and the seplette m © minor by Alexander Fesca, tor piano, violin, oboe, viola, horn, violoncello and con:rabasso, Cham- ber musio hag always been a béte noir in this city. ‘Tho only artistically successful attempt heretofore in this line hag been at Dodworth and Irving halls with ‘Yhoodore Thomas and a few congenial spirits. Yea: after year this devoted band, without adequato com- pensation, applied themselves, for the mere sake of art, tothe study of a branch ‘of music that calls for appreciation only by a small portion of the musical public, American cuncert goers gonerully Jook tor a grand orchestra, and the Meissonier-like cabinet in- strumental pictares of chamber music aro not oltom appreciated by them. Rubinsteta, in bis meteor triamph, with his accompauying comet, Wieniawski, attempted a short chamber music season, Von Bilow, with Damroscn and others, tollowed. ‘The reaalt in either case was unsatisfactory. The Toason {¢ obvioag, Chamber music requires an equality of rendering on the part of performers, ‘The ahghtest predominanee in any one part destroys the necessary balance of mstrumentation, The fiery vehemence of Rubinstein and the — ponderous style of Bulow overpowered the other performers, The chamber music party shouid be en rapport in evory sense of the word, and thon tho result is charming. Take, tor instance, Hawer’s description of the per- formance ot a Hayan quartet—*lt begins with seven 's’ rest 1or the first violin, and scems to glide off tho bows—tacile, casy, ripphug along like 4 summer rivulet. Every oue knows it; every one likes it; ‘murt “allegro, the adagio, just long enovgb, the rousing minuet and’ trio und the smart ‘vivace, which invariably rans all tho Hudiers off their lege, and euds with ‘Bravo, first fiddle!’ and a good laugh at violincello and tenor, who huye too often been dancing through tte move- ment with the light and airy gaits of elephants’? ‘There was little in accord with the spirit of the music on the Load of the members of Thomas’ or- chet evening. ‘The piano, a danger- ou jnstrument in chamber music, was in the hands of a ponderous representative, and the other instruments were in the same condition as the litle fishes in the New York Aquarium whon the whale bogins t6 blow. The soloists were Miss Drasdil and Mr. Arnold, It 1s to be hoped that the next con- cert of the New York Mozart Clab will be more artiste ically successiul than the lirst.
