THE GOLD AND MONEY MARKETS. Railway, Government and State Bonds. Watt Street, Sunpay, Oct. 15, 1876. To the large class of brokers and jobbers who hoped to find in the late bull movoment the initiation of a ture and permanent rise, the close of the week bas been somewhat disappointing. The stock market has been so Jong in shackles—chained down, as it wero, to the dvor of inactivity and depression—that nothing Jess than the efforts of a financial Baron Trenck could Avail to setitiree. After long waiting the brighter Prospects of trade seemed to announce the hour and the astute bull combination the man. Toa great do- §reo both have been weighed and found wanting. The attompt at release bas in a measure fuiled, The tise has been a matter of ‘sound and fury, signifying nothing” but a sharp turn and a proilt- able venture. The market hus been allowed to go to sleep again with little prospect of more than som- Bambulistic starts of activity and with slight hopes of permanent awakening. in the early partoft the week everything was couleur de rose. The combination had hoisted the coal stocks and imparted strength to the general list; had, withal, yn such good and cogent asons for theif proceedings that even outsiders, who had for so long been promised “the good time com- ing,” began to think it had come at last, New Jersey Centrai, which bad been scouted at as ‘worth legs than ten cents of the dollar, was suddenly discovered to be worth four times the money; the re- tiring directors were not rats deserting a sinking ship, but unpleasant rodents whose room was more valuable than their company; finally, tho new President wasa Daniel come to judgment, who could handie a colony of bears as deftly as he could the denizens of a lion’s den, and from whose masterly management a new era of prosperity for the company was to spring. Jn Delaware and Lackawanna no other plea was neo- essary than that the stoce had been unduly depressed by the rascally bears, who deserved punishment, and, As the sequel shows, got It, LakeShore and Michigan Central, Rock Island and Northwest all bada good word said in their favor to she extent of calling attention to the vast supplies of Brain secking tidewater; the personal responsibility of directors, who were to be made to disgorge the fruits of illegal leases; the immense value’ of land grants, and adozen other reasons showing that the tide was atthe flood and fortune to be reached by free pur- chases of the properties, Curiously these representations were more true than false, and by holding a firm hand on the market the public might have been eventually led to believe them; but at the ticklish moment the combination gave up the ‘stocks and whipped over to the other side of the account without even a “by your leave”” to the creduloua tali that had followed them. The whole operation turned out tobe as artificial as the hybrid image of clay and brass, and of no greater stability. By.the middle of the week the engine had been re- vorsed. Mr. Knight (so the story went) had got sick of both his stock and his presidency, and had sold out the one and threatened to throw upthe othor. The rail- roéad rate cutting business was to be more incisive than aver, and the Vanderbilt house and retainers had been sneaking out of their Lake Shore holdings. Added to these reports, which were principally fictions, was the one fact that the Reading corporation was bothered about its little “bills” which, like Banquo’s ghost, re(used to “down”? at its bidding, but claimed a pecuni- Ary recognition at maturity. Naturally, the course of prices took the downward track and much of the previous advanco was lost, On Saturday many of the bugbears referred to were swept away as fictitious creations, and the market assumed a firm aspect, with higher prices at the close. This, in brief, is the story of the week, and it isan ‘unsatisfactory one, as offering grounds for anything more solid than an artificial amd manipulated market for some time to come, There were no important events in the speculative erena during the past week that call for special com- ment or will not be explained by the tables below. At times the market was active and buoyant and the high- est prices of the present upward movement were made. Subsequently a decline set in, which was due both to realizing and to tho circulation of rumors of a fur- ther reduction of freight rates and that the paper of one of the coal roads had been protested. When, however, these statements wero discovered to be filse and it was announced on the other hand that the Canadian lines J bad advanced freights 25 per cent from Detruit to all points East, a reaction occurred and the market closed strong with an upward tendency, THE BUSINESS OUTLOOK 18 regard favorable to those who aro speculating tor higher prices. Henee the tenacity with which cer- tain securities have been heid and the pertinacity with which they have been manipalated for the last sixty days. It ia not to be denied that an improved condi- on of trade generally prevails, and that, especially in those channels which supply the necessities of the peo- ple, the, tide is moving with « ireer, sironger and broader current. money is in more active demand, Confidence Is increasing. Crops are moving forward to market atarats that will soon tax the carrying power of our railroads to the utmost, Tne valance of trado is in our favor, and in the event of a European war, or of preparations for the same, the amount will bo swelled by hundreds of millions of doilars. Every industrial agent in America will find employment, It is true that during tho past month or two the exceptional activity im business circles must be more or less ascribed to the movement of great masses of people to and from Philadelpnia and New York ana the expen- diture which naturally attends the trip, and it may not -be wise to count upon a similar condition during the rostof the year, Still, it is equaliy a fact that we are apon the verge of better times and already beginning to show the vigor and elasticity that mark our conva- lesence, As AN OFFSET TO A CHKERPUL vixw the October ciroular of Dun, Buriow & Co, presents an ex- « hibit of financial wrecks that at firss sight is startling and discouraging, It is to be renembered, however, that many of the firms were virtually bankrupt previous to 1876, and tho last nine months was 4 period of clearing away that which was already rotten, The annexed table shows the number of failures for seven quarters, ‘with gross liabilitics and the average Nabilities of each fallare in each quarter: — 1875, —-——_——_. THE MONSY MARKET The tendency of money during the week was to highor rates on call loans, and the extremes were 6 and 2.per cent, the last being the closing figure. The most of the business was done at 234 and 3 per cent, A similar fivancial situation is reported in Chicago, St Louis, Cincinnati and other Western cities, where money is being beld with more firmness than at any time during the past six months.
