“HINANCIAL AND COMERCIAL. ———_.____. The Stock Market Irregular and a Shade Lower, with a Decrease in Transactions. GOLD STEADY AT 108 78 A 109 \ a os Government Bonds Quiet and Steady at the Decliue—Money on Call 21-2 and 2 Per Cent—Railway Bonds Firm. ee Wats staer, |} Wepyaspay, Oct. 11—6 P. M. The bull party did not seem inclined to sit on the safety valve this morning, consequently there was less Steam made than for some days back, no progress effocted and scarcely power enough developed to siem the current. In fact the advance was rathor backward ‘han forward, most of the active fancies showing a lendency to arag their anchors and drift toward the leo shore of lower prices. The disposition to sell Lake Shore, as noticed in our last, prevailed again this morning among the pool tellers, and the price gave way moderatoly under the pressure. Apparently the clique were satistied to reap & moderate crop of profits trom their culture of Lake Shore to give the fleld of their labors a period of fallow: Bess which it bas not enjoyed for many a day, On the principle of a bird in the hatia being worth two in the bush they may be right in their pro- cedure; but as a way to invite and secure the co-oper- ation of » resilient public they ore unquestionably wropg. “Springes to catch woodcocks” are not sprung with a clatter tor experimental purposes when the bird is eying the bait, and outsiders are not tempted into speculation when a market gives way beforo it has well got going. Lake Shore, opening at last night’s figure of 58%, @ropped off to 57 before noon, railled subsequently to 67% and closed feverishly at the latter quotation, the pool having meanwhile ted the market caretully but copiously. The tactics of the combination seem to be to capture the bears In detail, and their attack fe directod in turn to such specialties as show the liveliest short interest. So to-day the bears in the St, Paul stocks received a taste of their quality and were made to squirm unpleasantly under an ad- vanee of 14g per cent for the common and 1% for the preferred, and this, too, under the apprehension of diminished receipts for the current week. Next to the St, Paul stocks in point of activity came Western Union, marked by a quick rise of over one per cent, though less than half of it was retained at theend. Thoannual mceting of the company was held to-day, at which the old board of directors was re- elected, who in turn will eboose executive officers for the ensuing year on Friday, The presentation of a favorable report of the year’s business gave a start to the stock above noted, but fuiled to hold It, There is an increase of $470,000 in gross receipts over last year, which was to be expected in view of Centennial matters and the Presidential campaign, and a corresponding increase of gross expenses of $300,000, which seemsan ‘intolerable deal of sack” for so limited an amount of bread. An examination of the statement én extenso is necessary to ascertain the precise stand- ing of the company and of its ability to pay 8 per cent dividends in the future. . Dealings in the coal shares were restricted, with a tendency to lower prices, Delaware and Lackawanna falling off one point and Central of New Jersey barely holding its own at the close. Having been turned adrift by the pool, these securities have been left to wander alone, like speculative babes in the wood, with ahazy future before them and an avuncular enmity manifested by the continuea bearish feeling. Bonds were strong and in some cases higher, witha fairly distributed business, The amount of transactions in the share list wero considerably smaller than on yesterday, tho specula- tive feeling having cooled down and given way, in some measure, to discussion of the political situa Von.
