5 NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1876.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ——_—- -—_- The Stock Market Irregular— Speculation Feverish, GOLD 109 7-8 A 110. The Money Market Firmer at 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent—Government and Railway Bouds Steady. —_-—- Watt Strzsr, Tnorsvay, Sept. 28—6 r. M. Tt Reading bas met with such « precipitate tem- ple while in the bands of oa Soewty of Friends, query what would have been its fate bad it “been left to the tender mercies of its gmemies——ihe Twenty-third street party, for in- Stance? Not that its destiny is settled as yet, for Philadelphia brokers have shut up shop to-day and are airing their patriotism as the Centennial, while the stock ts lef ina purgatory of suspense until to-mor- fow. Street quotations, however, name 58 as the nominal price, which gives a clean drop of thirty points for the last twenty-four bours, and in quickness of descent beats out of sight the decline of our own @ore sluggish coal carriera, Theso la:ter, rick enough at all times without tho ur- expected pill trom Phiiadelphia, were made to swallow an additional bolus to-day in tho shape of a probably well founded report that the directors of the Delaware and Lackawanna Company will to-morrow vote to ‘pass’? the usual quarterly dividend, If there be foundation forthe statement that the concern is run- ning behindhand at the rato of $100,000 per month the step is a wise one, though stockholders will not be apt to look upon it in that light. It is only the fret Step that costs, and this having been already taken holders of the security argue that a resumption of dividends will now be more difficult than ever, There was apother improvement in prices at the Delaware and Hudson sale of 100,000 tons of ceal to- flay, which brought figures almost up to schedulo fates; but there was no responso in the quotation of the stock, Delaware and Lackawanna selling down rom 7434 to 7244, and New Jersey Central oscillating between 25% and 26%. A curious story 1s told of Reading, which is dificult to digest without recourse to u saltcellar, 10 the effect that the company itself has been the buyer of the large amount of seller 60 stock at 88, and that the reason thereof lay in the necessity of supportiwwg the tredit of the road up to such time as certain accept ances of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, indorsed by the Philadelphia and Reading Raliroad, should mature and be renewed. The story is of the streot streety, but if true, furnishes method to the apparent madness of the McCalmot-Borie com- “bination. Whilo the old bull party were carefully dry nursing Lake Shore (and it is curious to note, in parenthesis, how many stocks are literally brought up on the bottle) the malignants of the ‘‘corner’’ were playing Herod with the innocents of the West, St. Paul and the Northwester swo per cent decline on each class of stock, though late im the day tho second recovered the greater part of the loss, while the first closed only fractionally better. Tho falling off in the receipts and the belief that the stockjobbing directors have sold out and bave shipped over to the short side invite attack and encourage the attention of the bears, The market, thus divided against itself, proves rather a quandary to the street, which bas been expecting the dovelop- ment of a campaign to-day, either up or down, as the result of the pow-wow held at the Gilsey House last evening. All the braves and bucks of the contending factions were said to have been present, and it was rumored bat the hatchet was buried, the pipe of peace smoked and a puil-together arraugement settled upon that was to be pregnant with great resulta. So far thore arc no signs of fecundity, and instead ofa “pull togother,” the day’s business has shown a ', all devil, pull tailor” order of things anything tut Ngniticant of « love feast. Dealings in other stocks were lmited and [ree from ‘xcltement, and will probably remain sv until their turn comes for the artilicial manipulation which makes the market. ‘The transactions at the Stock Exchange to-day ag- Bregated 143,100 shares.
