10 LONDON'S DRAMATIC. SEASON, Two New Pieces at the Gaiety by Henry J. Byron, First Night of Gilbert's New Drama, “Daniel Druce.” RE Ee ED SUCCESS OF HERMANN VEZI ooo . PRONGU Lonvox, Sept. 11—Midnight, The melancholy days have come with a vengeance. Now do we return to our first necessit Bret loves—tho um! the waterproof and golosbes ef the period—tor now it raiueth daily, aud the cold, @amp air sends stivers down the most warmly dis- posed back, permeating the mind with suicidal gloom Bnd tho bones with rheuinatisin, Nature no longer Invites, and art comes to the rescue of such as depend Bpon one or the other for existence. Theatres have Dpened their doors and first nights have begun. Always the avantgarde of dramatic uovelty, Mr Hollingshead ushered in the auiumn season with Henry J. Byron. Byron, Mr, Sou- tar, Mr. Maclean, Mr Royer, Mr. Fawcett, and Miss Farren met with cordial receptions, and peo- ple laughed whenever they could. The farce, howeve: was Byron at his worst, The plot recalled ‘fhe Great Divorce Case,” but imagining this three-act tarce which Montaguo will produce mm New York to be a Dottle of champagne, Byrou’s farce 1s this same cham- pagne aiter the cork has been drawn several hours. tho phiz is gone, Of course Byron cannot help mak- Ing notes, He wilidic with an opigram on his ps, but he is not haif as Byrouic as in “Married im Haste,” where he gave himself and everybo¢y else parts that could bo turned into characters, ag well as indulged in mirth-provoking repartee, He calls Louise Cleum “Unlimited Loo.” “I used ty finish with achap at Evans’, says the very much murried Mr, Cleum, “Now you have a devil at nome,’ retorts Byron as Paul Percival, “I was brought up at the dar” exclaimed the tmpecunious Irishman, The O’Lar- Fagon; “What lad you been doing?” asks Byron, Ono Of the characters, I forget which, refors to something as “like tho end of a comedy where the applause comes fa"? “I have known it the other way,” dolefalty mutters Byron, at which the audience rvars pointedly. But repartee will not cover every deficiency, and when some one, a star, stated that the buman intellect could only stand a certain monial strain, tho pit broke into Applause that binted at baving arrived at this point When tho curtain fell on the third act some one in tho gallery criod out, “Was that the burlesque or tho Pomedy ?"’ and the applause was plentitully spiced with bisses, “1s 19 @ failure,” said ove or moro critic, with a decision of tone that would hare carried conviction to a more creduivus breast than mine. It was not ao artistic success, 1 knew, but perhaps what was to follow would pat everybody ima good humor and turn tho scales in Byron's favor, So at came to puss. “Litlle Don Ciesar de Bazan’? is a capital burlesque on the drama of that name. There is “‘go” and fun in it from beginning to end, and itis capitally acted. Miss Farren has very great ability in Durlesque; so, too, Las Mr. E. Terry. With such a Dou Cesar and such a Cherles IL, with the graceful dancing of Miss Kate Vaughn, and the extraordinary agility of Mr. Royce, who goes through, at and under everything lke astreak of lightning, the burlesque is doomed to be puplar, The Prince of Wales and everybody e'se at it, but the wise dilettante shook his bead, “You know it won't do,” he suid, That was two weeks ago, The Gaiety bay had crowded houses over since, The people gotosce Byron, the author, in the rst piece, and May to cujoy Lin in the second, They take “Tho Bull by tho Horns,” 1m order to make the acquaint. ance of “Little Dou Cwsar?
