AMUSEMENTS. WIBLO'S GARDEN—THE SPECTACLE OF ‘DATA.’ Niblo’s Garden was reopened last evening, aftera lapse of several years, before a large audience. The ccasion was the first production of s new spectacle sailed “Baba,” The plot deals with a simple fairy Nory. Thero is a Turkish tailor, a grand vizier, lots of fairies, bathers, a talisman, a pacha, a crumbling palace and a transformation scene, in which ail the art of Ben Sterwood seems to have expended itself The Story is such as may be found in the ‘Arabian Nights,”” Bo matter at which page the reader may be inclined to intrust himself. In tho course of the piece there are two ballets, {n which appear Miles. Elizabeth and Helen Minzein, from the lmperial Theatre, Berlin, supported by a full ballet corps of 200 dancers, These ladies exhibit pe- culiar grace ip their coryéeagraphic measures, mixing them as they do with the melody of the music, Last Right they fally deserved the tumulteous applause they received, aad justified their European reputation, They are bound to make a tremendous hit. The bal- let movements that accompanied the solo perform. ances of these artistes were devised by Mensiour A. Blondowski, and very sincothly filled out the enchant- ‘ng. beauties of the fairy scenes. ‘he orchestra is under the direction ef Max Maret- ek, and the incidental and vocal muste throughout the Piece is his original composition and proved harmoni- ous and popular, judging froin the applause tt received, The music that accompanies the ‘March of the Ama- tons’? was especially brilliant, and the evolutions of the ballet in this march were, considering ‘t was a lirst public performance, very commendable, Miss Eliza Weathersby played ‘the Amoret with rollicking humor, sang her songs with eflect, snd made u very charining young lover. Mr. W. H. Crane, who played the title part of the piece, Baba, convulsed the house with his unctuous humor. The Twin Princesses, played by Miss Emma #tockman, a new comer, from Majtimore, and Miss J. Weathersby, were bright features of ‘the dramatic action. The Vizier of Mr. J. W. Jennings was artis- Hieally grotesque and did tuli justice to the situations in which the character was placed. The Fairy Queen (Miss Lulu Jordan) and her attendant spirits (Misses Ltynge, De Vere und Latour) quite filled the cthereal measure of their responsipilities. The tumbling sprite of the piece is Jean Ravel, who was so popular years ago when child this place under the sobriquet of ‘Young America.” His performance was unique, Vining Bowers, S W. Glenn, Vincent Hogan and others contributed matertally to the success ef the dramatic portion of the spectacle, One of the tongs coniained local reterences of piquancy, and was weil sung by Miss Eliza Weathersby, popular. LOUDS” AT THE PARK’ THEATRE, The season opened at the Park Theatre last evening with a new play entitled “Clouds,” written by Mr. Fred Marsden. The house looked fresh and noat, as if tecently brightened up, and a good-humored and Moderately full audience assisted at the initial fepresentation of the play ana the season. The action of “Clouds” deponds upon the righting of | im injured woman’s wrong. In the first act, under the umed name of Ralph Gordon, Ralph Randall, the von of a wealthy ex-Congressman (Hon, Walter Kan- dail, residing on tho Hudson), is discovered living with bis ostensible wife Stella in a cottage at katontown, N.J., which he supports with bis father’s money His trequent absences trom home become the sabje dt comment with the village goxsips and the worry of bis wile, Betore the act closes, his whereabouts being discovered by his futher, who has determined to tut bim off without imberitance unless he murries a Mise Cora Adair, whom the old gentleman had adopted ato hia family on the death of her father, Welter Kandail’s hfe long friend, the profligate aud unprinci- vied youth deserts bis Jersey cottage, the woman ho talled bis wite, and her chiid or his father’s | ey, leaving a letter to say his marriage a sham. ‘Through the instrumentality of \ friend, Fred Towne, the deserted "wile ander tho name of Mrs, Loc, 1s introduced into the Randall mansion, on the Hudson, as a housekeeper, During her stay there her late pretended husband ffers his hand to Miss Adair, who kindly accepts it without his heart, in view of prospective du Before the loveless pair are ied to marriage, however, Mrs, Lee discovers, through the aid of Fred Towne, wat the real Miss Adair is dead and that tho woman who fills her place is an impostor. All that remains, therefore, 1s to establish this fact to the old gentloman’s satisfaction, and, that obstacle veing removed, he naturally, though rather reluctantly, tonsents to aidiin splicing the 6 d_hearts of bis er- fing son and the mothero! that son’s child, ‘The plot, ag may be seen {rom this brief outline of it, 18 siender, rather weak and = without noyelly in ita tonstruction, The morais of the chief actors, wf American, are peculiar to that phase of Yociety that may be denominated “mixed.” There is fome forced passion and a little cheap wit here and there and the persons upon whom chiefly rests the duty of advancing the action are given too much to the delivery of homilies of a rather common- place sort, But then there are aleo 1 the play and these evoked a good de: of laughter at Mon of characters :— Hon. Perhaps a better name for “Clouds”? would have been “Smoke,” since even Whose who ought to behave with propriety all seem so mystified as to the proprieties, But there are no shght possibilities for the provo- tation of merriment in the new piay, and when it shall Aave been trimmed down somewhat it may become a favorite like other plays, which have ua iittle if not ess to recommend them. Miss Augusta Dargon, a lady well known in the West, but # new candidate for public favor in this region, ap- peared at this theatre last evening as Deborah the Jewess, in Mosenthal’s drama of that name. Miss Dar, gon 1s an artist of no mean power, and she possesses talent that stamps her as a tragic actress of bigh rank. Despite the fact that she played to a small audience, Deborah ts one ill calculated to win sympathy from the Spectators, Miss Dargon achioved a decided triumph. In the earlier scenes she was somewhat cold and stagy, but as. the piece progressed and the part gave scope for her talents she rose to the full strength of the striking situations in the third and fourth acts. The wild aud devoted love of the Jewisb girl for her Chris- tian jover was well portrayed, and when ghe finds her- seif abandoned for another her grief and wrath were thrilling and effective. Trying to hate Joseph, yet loving him, she is finally ariven to curse bim, his bride and his fortune, in this scene Miss Dargou gained her chiet triumph, and in delivering the curse she fairly roused the house and carried it with b Fearless, heart shaken, doubting the God of her fathers and the truth of mankind, the ill-used and forsaken woman seemed for ‘the moment like one inspired, She hissed out her curses with fierce hatred one moment, and the next her tones were weird and stony, as though she remembered that sho was selling Up a terrible barrier between himself and the man she loved, despite his apparent cruelty. But it was in the last act (bat Miss Dargon won over her auditors, Coming back to view the desolation she had prayed for, Deborah’s heart is full of unsatisied ven- ©, but she 18 overcomo by the knowieago she is held in sweet remembrance by those she has cursed, and that Joseph’s child bears ber own name, The sudden revulsion of feeling and tho deep penitence of the woman who has pre- sumed to call down Divine vengeance on those who really had done her no harm was admirably por- tray Miss Dargon reminds us of Mme. Ponisi in her best days, the voice bemg identical, while her ges- tures show great knowledge of stage business and effect, She 18 no copyist, and in: other characters wust be even more successful, for she evidently aims ata high standard, Miss Dargon was woll supported by James H. Taylor as Joseph and Mr. Loveday as the Burgomaster, Mr. Nagle, an old time favorite of the Bowery, acted ti apostate Jow with his accustomed vigor, and Mise Rachel Noah was very pretty and alfectionate aa Anna, 118 to be hoped that Miss Dargon will receive better encouragement during the remainder of her engage- ment than was accorded to her Jast evening, for she deserves it, THR PHILADELPHIA MUSICAL FESTIVAL. Theodore Thomas commences en Wedneaday even_ ing, at the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, a musical festival of moro than ordinary importance. Besides his own incomparable orchestra, which is now larger and stronger than ever, be will have an immense chorus and a host of soloists, Wagner’s music will form a leading feature in the festival, which, from a Musical point of view, will be the most valuable yet known during the Centennial year.
