THE SATURDAY NIGHT RAIDS [CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.) Michaol Cullen, the temperance voentist, paid his fine and was discharged. Two of the womeu prisoners gave | their names as Bessie Turner aud Sarah Fuler.on. They were fined $5 each aud paid their fines, Captain James E. Boyle, tho billiard player, who Btrolied into the piace through curiosity and was ar- Tested with the others, was discharged. When the prisoners from the saloon “Le Paris” were Drought up the proprietor, Frederick Hughes, admitted he was the proprietor, aud said that if Justice Bixby would release the waiter giris and men arrested in the place he would promise to sell out the place and Dot re- open it Justice Bixb,, in consideration ,of the fact that the place had been advertised as ove of public amusement, discharged the waiter girls and visitors who were arrosted, and held Huyhes in $800 bail for trial, which was prowptly turnished. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Situation in Trade and Speculative Circles—Encouraging Signs. ADEN hctrk RAPS THE GOLD AND MONEY MARKETS. | Review of the Week—Covernment, Railway and Southern Bonds. tacit aire Want Street, Sunpar, Sept, 17, 1876. Both in Gnancial and commereial circles the business: dealings of the past week have been large nud the re- eults more than usually satisfactory. ‘The city is over- flowing with strangers and trade centres are ali alive with their presence. The demand which bas suddenly | sprang up has absorbed millions of dollars? worth of | merchandise which awaited this jall movement, and a beighter focling is everywhere apparent, In the de- partment of dry goods especially it is noted that a more hberal distribution of goods bas taken place than during any season since 1873. This has given work to the various mills and factories of the country, | and in turn stimulated business in all the industrial channels that radiate from our metropolis and are animated vy its commerce. If the reduction in the price of coal shall affect in asimilar degree the tron interest of the country, and give employment to the hundreds of now idle furnaces and the thousands of id!o mon, we shall indeed have crossed we Rubicon avd be once more on the high road to prosperity, In ‘THR STOCK MARKET there has been exhibited a degree of feverishnoss hat contrasts strongly with the calmer and more en- couraging undertone that exists eisewnere. The rea- son 18, perhaps, sufficiently obvious. Wall street has lest its leadership and no longer reflects far in advanco { the approaching changes in the commercial situation. The outside clement which in former times was a part of sucecsstul speculation is both poor and absent. The men who have swept into their coffers the bulk of profits during the decline of the last sixty days are chicfly the professional operators. ‘The majority of brokers are impoverished and disheartened, and to- | day, instead of recognizing the cheering signs beyond the doundaries of the Stock Exchange as likely to pro-- duce immediate benetit to themselves, are despondently expecting the worst, This is attested by the dillleulty with which stocks are sustamed and tho immense number of short sales that have been made of securi- Mes heretofore among the most favored. The lack o¢ tonfidence bas rarely been more prevalont, and yet it would seem, in view of all tio fa that the time is acar at hand when there must bo a change for the vetter. THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE WEKK were large, and at times the fluctuations, especially of ‘ne coal stocks, were wide. The best prices of the week, Lowever, are not shown at the close. The chief tiention was bestowed on Delaware and Lackawanna, New Jersey Central, Lake Shore, ‘Delaware and Had- son Canal, Pacific Mail, Western Union and Erie, The greatest decline was in New Jersey Central, which foll from 83% to 203;, with arevovery tn final dealings to 225. Among the bituminous coal shares Consolidation declined & per cei Delaware and Hudson teli from 75 to ¢4, and ended at 69; Delaware and Lackawanna from 7944 10 73%, closing at 7734. Lake Shore opened at 61%, rose to 643i, alter selling at 5044, and closed at 6334. St. Paul common declined from 33% to 30%, which was the last price. Tie preferred was steadier. Aichigan Coatral was also weuker, falling from 41% tg 89 a 397%. ‘yhe following tablo represents the opening, highest and lowest sales, regular way, of the principal stocks during the past week, together with the number of shares dealt in:— Atantic and Pacitic pref. The Condition is one of extreme case, and the rates are stercotyped 1 and 1; per cent, with exceptional | transactions as lowas 1 per cert, The tmprovement | in mercantile circles and the freer distribution of goods resulted in more activity in the market for dis- count, there being more paper written which found | equally ready buyers, but at firmor figures for ali | grades. The best lines of dry goods paper ruaning sixty and ninety deys were quoted at 34344, four mames fetching 4 per cent, and singlo name: four to six months, 514 per cent There is good ine quiry for grocery paper, and four mouths is quoted at | 4 per cent, while 3 & 354 is the quotation for sixty days. | Single names rate as high as 6 per cent and are but | little asked for. The toreign exchanges bave been | heavy and lower, and tle bankers bave reduced their rates several times, owing to the somewhat limited de mand for bills and the increasing supply of commer ciai sterling made against shipments of cotton, broad- etafls and provisions, The bank statement published yestorday makes a favorable exhibit, and it is noto- qworthy that the increase of loans ilustrates a better @emand for money resulting from the general improve- meat in business. BXPORTS AND IMPORTS, ‘The foreign commerce ot the port for the week was an follows:—Genersi merchandise importa, taelnding y dry gouds, $5,001,875; produce exports, $4,876,624, and bpecio exports, $429,724. ‘The total imports of merchandise at the port since NEW YORK HERALD, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER i8, 1876,—WITH SUPPLEMENT. January 1, this year, were $208,$16,969, against 15,848, 718 for the corresponding period in 1875 and $295,437,515 in 1874. ‘The total exports of produce from the port since January 1, this year, Were $185,544,953, against $176,722,155 for the corresponding period in 1875 and $208,326,021 in 1874, The total exports of specie were $39,908, 852, against $62,226,172 in 1875 and $42,552,814 im 1874. THE GOLD MAREXT. ‘The gold speeulation was heavy early in the week and the prices declined trom 1103 to 1093%, but subse- quently there was a firmer feeling and a recovery to 110 1-3. Cash gold has been somewhat difficult of access and lent for use atl, 2 and 3 per cent per an- num. GOVERNMENT BONDS were quist and firm. ‘There was, however, no special feature in the market save that it closed at the best prices of the week, la reply to numerous, inquiries from investors, officers of institutions, trustees of estates and others having money to invest as to what government bonds they sHould ouy for imvestment, or whether they should exchange the government bonds they now hold for the vew four and a half per cent bonds, Messrs, Fisk & Hatch, bankers and gealers in government securities, have issued a elrcular, in which they compare the relative value of the new four and a half per cent bonds with the old government 1ssucs. ‘They say, in substance, that the rapid decline in the price of most of the government bonds consequent upon tife negotiation of tne four and a huaif per cent bonds has led many to suppose that in some way the older igsucs bad suddenly lost some thing of their value an mmyvestmont; that the sale of the new bonds necessarily involves the early calling in for redemption, and @ conse- quent Gepreciation in value, of all the older issues; and that there must be some advantage tn selling their old bonds and buying the new. The facts, as stated in the circular, are:—“he amcunt of the four and a half per cent bonds authorized by law is $00,000,000. The amount of the five-twentics of 1865, old (May and No- vomber), outstanding is $15,558,050, The amount of the five-twenties of 1865, new (January and July), out- standing ts $202,663,100. These bonds are called in tor redemption only in the order of their issue and only as the new bonds are sold; and when called tu draw interest for three months after the date at which | they are called. From which it will be seen that $150,000,000 of the four and a haif per cent bonds must ve sold before the oid 18658 can be called in und before any of the new 18653 can be disturbed; and that the sale of the entire amount of the four and a half per cent bonas authorized will still leave $53,000,000 of the new 1865s outstanding and all the five-twenties of 1867 and 1863, “It has been no partot our purpose to depreciate the value of the new jour anda half per cent bonds, but only to indicate the relative value of the other government bonds in comparison. We believe that, in the present condition of our national credit, and with its steady growth throughout the financial world, a bond of the United States, bearing four and a half per cent interest, and offered for sale ata little over par in gold, is the most attractive investment now otfered to the capital of either this country or Europe, excepting only, for the time being, the other issues of United States bonds, which, through misapprebongion, have temporarily declined below their true relative value. We have heretofcre opposed the issue of four and a half per cent bonds, but only on the ground that the issue of such a bond way unnecessary if the gov- ernment would abandon the policy of short and op- tional loans and issue a four per cent bond having a suficient time to run, say filty years, and thata four per cent bond having fitty years to run would bo more desirable and attractive to capital than a four anda half per cent bond having the promise of but fitteen years of life, and would, in time, be available for the funding of all the outstanding six per cent bonds, at an enormous saving to the National Treasury in the inte! est payments for futuro years,” SOUTHKRN BONDS. Virginias were firm, without sales; Louisiana consols better, Texas bonds lower, Tennessees weak and de- clining and Alabamas in fair demand by home buyers, The unsettled condition of political affairs in the south is not without effect on this market, RAILROAD BONDS, ‘There was, a8 usual, a large and active business in railway mortgages, and more than the usual irreg- ularity existed, especially in the coal lines, The most conspicuous were the bonds of the Now Jersey Central system, which were feverish and subjected to wide changes, The bonds of the Western roads were erally frm and higher, noticeably the Chicago and Northwestern ‘coupon gold consols. The Pacific coast bonds wore in good request at firm Sgures, At the close bonds were firm on Northwosts and Missouri, Kansas and Texas, continuing weak on Central New Jersey. MEMORANDUM, ‘The American Mining Board will officially commence business and tho call of tho stocks which have received approval on Monday, tho 2d of October. New York was never so full of strangers as it is at the present time, Tho hotels of all classes are thronged to overflowing, and the streots are filled with our cousins from every section of the country. The hotel people state that the ‘rush’ ts entirely without preco- dent in the history of Now York. The unusual travel to this city is due, it is said, aimost entirely to tho Centennial Exposition and its attendant attractions, Tho terrible heat of the summer just passed prevented thoufands from visiting Philadelphia. 1t was at first whispered, then talked about, and finally accepted as @ fact, that tho proper time to eo the Centennial” was during the month of September, ‘The natural result of this is the overcrowding of rail- ways and hotels, To the Western people New York is as much of an attraction as oven the Exposition itsell. To the Easterners it is the gate tolhiladelphia, In consequence, many from choice, a few perhaps from necessity, flock to the metropolis. ‘The hotels most affected by the influx are the down- town houses, At ove of the largest downtown hotels the rush has continued unabated for several weeks, At Grst the house filled ap rapidly, itis true, but not unusually so, then they “doubled.” The rush con- tinued, and many were turned away, Last evening tho gcene in the balls and corridors was inost animated. Tho reception rooms and parlors were thronged with ladies; the halls and smoking room with gentlemen, who were the happy possessors of cots. There were 150 cots in use last night, and every nook and corner of the house was pressed into service. In almost all of the downtown houses the guests have Leen obliged to “double up.'’ In one of the houses well known to Western men it was found noces- ry to put cots im the parlors, In some of the hotels around Washington Market no rooms are to be had, and hundreds are daily turned away. A large cast sido house, generally patronizod by Kastern people, is aflected as are the others by the Centonnial travel. At one of the larger downtown houses numbers were | turned away on Saturday evening and all aight long, | and yesterday people were clamoring for what tho clerks could not give—rooma The scene on Saturday evening in and around this house was singular, Men and women stood in groups eagerly discussing their chances of obtaining places to sleep. They spread into Newspaper row, aud quickly searched vut the SMALLER DOWNTOWN HOUSES, They were in turn soon filled, but still the tncoming trains poured their buinan freight into the already over-tilied hosteirics. THK UPLOWN HOUSES, although well filled, were too large to be seriously af- fected, particularly as the cheaper houses were more in demand. . Altogether the rasb at the hotels has been, for the ast two weeks, extraordinary? aud, although & might Pave been expectod, it has iound many hou uo- prepared, * i BROOKLYN ROBBERIES, Henry Lang, aged nineteen years, residing at No. 20 Bayard street, New York, was arrested on complaint of Andrew Nuke by Officer Roach, of the Third pro- | cinet, Brooklyn, on charge of burglary.
