NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 135, 1876.—-TRIVLE SHEET. “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL — —+—-— An Active and Higher Market—A , General Advance Along the Line, GOLD FIRMER AT 10 A WO 18 Money on Call Loaus 1 and 1 1-2 Per Cent— Government and Railway Bonds Steady— The Coal Stocks Working Up. ~ Watt Sraxer, Tuurspar, Sept, 14—6 P, M. ‘The bulls have appeared in battle array to-day, ‘‘ter- rible as an army with bapners,”? and their march bas been a victorious one, with scarcely let or hindrance. Even the anthracite stocks have been wheeled into line with a dash and élan that carried them to the front of the slower moving railwa: New Jersey Cen- tral was the only laggard, decidedly ragged in condl- tion, as though it had deserted from Falstafl’s regi- ment aad in its crippled condition was unable to keep step with its comrades. The strength shadowed in yesterday’s later dealings came out in full force this morning and increased with the hours, pervading the market as a whole, abd espe- cially affecting some particular stocks. Thus Delaware aad Hudson bounded up from 655; to 72, Morria and Essex from 84 to 90, while Delaware and Lackawanna, not quite so vigorous in its advance, but at the head of the column in point of transactions, reached trom 74 to 79 under considerable excitement. From the coal Stocks the furor spread to the railway and miscella- neous lst, being particularly observable in Lake Shore, in which the oid party were doing yeoman’s service, carrying the price to 5434 at the close, and establishing ® quotation over five points better than ruled some ten days ago Inalesser degree the Western shares, with Michigan Central and Rock Island, showed a higher range of tigures, varying from }4 tol per cent, and protty generally keeping the improvement at the end. ‘The beara, as usual, helped the rise vy frantic efforts to cover, amd the customary scramble to eseape the penalty of selling other pooplo’s property was strongly de Joped. Although the shorts put their best toot foremost the market ran away trom them, and there ‘was Do catebing the longs, who seemed to be favored with an additional leg, like thoir prototype in efligy, ‘That oil'd and curl’d Assyrian bull. While the abovo is true of tho general market New Jersey Central was plunged into ‘‘doletul dumps,” and, In fact, oflered the onty harbor of refuge for crippled and despondent bears inthe whole market. An ourly Advance of nearly one point brought the quota- Mon to 28%, when the whole aspect changed ind @ precipitate slump ensued, which carried the stock to 25, or equal to the lowest figure it has yet reached. Thore appears to be no confidenc ewhatever im a possible resuseitation of the concern under the Progent management, and to this was added to-uay re- vived reports of a receiver, if not of an actual appeal to the Bankruptcy Court The latest figure was 26—an (improvement due to the closing of sellers’ contracts end « desire to harvest profit, * The borrowing demand was not so urgent to-day, and premiums like those of the Centennial Exhibition were nothing to speak of, the highest rates being 4 per cent and tapering off to flut beiore twé o’clock. Tho upward xpurt in tho market very decidedly di- minished the supply of sellers’ options, which, in the matter of the coal sharey, have een so trooly offered for wome days back, tho bears finding suflicient employ- ment ia closing up old contracts, without troubling themsclves about now ones. Hs In railroad bonds there was rather an active market, with generally better prices, the notable exception being in the issues of the coal carriers, which were weak and lower. Business closed with every appearance of a further advanco to-morrow, The question remaining to be solved, however, is as to whether the rise has any- thing permanent in its nature—whether it is founded apon the stable busix of an awakening prosperity, or whether it is simply awhirl created for the discom- fiture of boars and limited to the accumulation of paltry profits and & brief existence.
