Rvr - to be facts, and bears pretended to believe them, “New Jersey Cent _NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER ER 7, 1876. TRIPLE SHEET, Another Bear Raid—The Ceneral Market Meady at a Fractional Advance. a GOLD 1095-8 A 1091-2. Government Bonds Generally Steady—-Rail- road Bonds Slightly Lower—Money on Call Easy at 1 a 1 1-2 Per Cent. Watt Street, } + Wepnxspay, Sept. 6—6 ot. Mt. ‘The fresh stampede in New Jersey Central this morn- ing was too sudden and unexpected to yield much benefit to the bears, for there were fow ‘prophetic souls” among their number who would hava fore- shadowed such a catastrophe. From 34 the plunge to 25 was quick, sharp and decisive. 1t was like the charge of the Light Brigade. Brokers were sent in with orders to sell at the market, “Theirs not to Teason why,” but simply to obey instructions. As is usual with frights of this sort, the effect was out of aly kind of proportion to the cause. The wildest rumora prevailed that an cnormous defaleation had been discovered within the company; that Mr. Johnson had abandoned the presidency, and that the paper of the concern would go to protest to-day. Holuers of stock believed the stories 0 be tween the pressure of these two classes of sellers 1t is little wonder that a break of nine points was recorded before noon. A little later on Messrs, Whitehouse & Co., king for Mr. Knox, tho Treasurer of the com- pany, caused an announcement to be made to the effect that all rumors and reports of every kind and cescrip- tion were entirely false, The stock, which had already begun to recover, and was selling at 28, gained new Strength from the statement, and rose to 294, at which M remained at the clos: Lackawanna and Western showed but little of a fidua Achates tecling, and with a “sympathy cold to dis- tant misery” limited its variations by the points of 833; and 8034, with a Qual improvement to 8134. Delaware and Hudson was even less sympathetic, for It refused to budge more than % per cent either way, and, being unassailed by sellers’ option, had a quiet Gay of it and a smail record in the way of transactiona. In spite of the alarming flurry in the coal concern the jlway and miscellaneous list preserved its equanimity. The market is no longer to be scared by the cry of wolf, and to-day business went its way unaffected by the turmoil and deaf tothe alarums that arose from the coal carriers’ quarter, dake Shore, the Western roads and Western Union at the most alarming moment scarcely showed more than a fractional reiapse from the opening prices; while, as the day. grew older, quotations grow betier with it and those finally made were the best of the record. Against Michigan Cextral some of the old Venom was ejected early in the day, with the result of marking 118 value down a point more, but the virus jost its power on the exhibition of strength in other quarters, and it finished 3% per cent betier than it opened. In a word, there was convalescence ali around at the close, and the sickly patient of a day or two back showed a marked improvement in strength and tone of speculation, Railroad bonds were also looking up and shaking off the depression of yesterda’. The issues of the West- ern roads were again stronger and higher, and the general list steady, with the exception -of the coal companies’ bonds, whieh were drooping and weak under the affliction which bas seized upon the rest of the family. No employment for money on call at over 1% per cent, and no use for it in the share market as a pur- chasing medium, though a builish feeling is growing, and such stocks as Lako Shoro, St. Paul and Western Union are urged as sure winning cards to fortunate holders.
