THE COURTS. Judge Westbrook held Supreme Coart, Chambers, yesterday, succeeding Judge Dykman. He weet through the calendar for the month with a despatch equalling any of our veveran city Judges. Both Judges Westbrook and Dykmac, through their prompt dispo- sition os, have already become great favorites of the Ni ‘k Bar. A MURDERER TO BR TRIED. In May last, in the course of a tenement house quar rei in Kast Nivth street, an old man named James Dow well killed bis wife. Bofure Recorder Hackett. OPENING OF THK SEPTEMBER TERM. Promptly at eleven o’clock yesterday morning Re- corder Hackett, looking vigorous and fresh after luis brief vacation, took his place upon the bench to open the Court for the September term. Assistant District Attorney Bell was on hand to prosecute, and a large detachment of prisoners {rom the Tombs, whose names figured on the calendar, occupied the lock-up. A grand jury was ompanelled, with Mr. Charles Partridge, of No. 129 Broad street, as foreman. His Honor delivered a very brief chargo to them. ‘1 do not,’ said he, “pros pose to charge you at any great length on this occasion; but I fear it will become my duty to call your attention in the course of a few days to @ matter that directly affects the interests of this community, I am not proparea to-day to speak of it, but will simply content myself with calling your aMention to those requirements which tho statute en- joins upon me.” ‘rhe Recorder proceeded to call the ‘attention of the jury to offences which should claim their special attention, including iotteries, usury, dis- honesty on the part of public officials, violation of the laws concerning the elections, sale’ of intoxicating Iiquors, and frauds upon steamboat and other passeu- gers. charge concluded with a warving to tho Jory not to find indictments against prisoners for a higher grade of crime than they could be convicted of in Court—for instance, not to find an indictment against & person jor highway robbery when he could be con- victed only of larceny from the person, A petit jury was then sworn, and the officials were prepared to dis- pose of all the cases on the calendar, but it proved that most important witnesses wero not in attendance, and His Honor adjourned the Court till this morning, after sending a couple of prisoners who pleaded guilty of as: gaults to the Penitentia GENERAL SESSIONS—PART 2, Before Judge Gildersleeve. PREPARING FOR BUSINESS. A large number of lawyers and jurors were on hand yesterday in tho new court room, directly above :'art 1. During tho vacation the room has been thoroughly cleaned, painted and carpeted, and now presents a very tastotul’ appearance. At the Fifty-seventh street Court yesterday Michael Kingiy and Robert King were committea for trial mmpiaint of Michael Harrington, No, 457 West eventh street, whom they robbed while lying pon his own stoop. Fr.nk Condon, of Bayard street and Bowery, yester- ay made a complaint before Justice Morgan, at th Fombs, charging Joseph Martin with robbing bim of a watch valued at $50.
