, FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Marke. Heavy and Lower—Further De- cline in Coal Stocks, GOLD 109 7-8 A 1093-4 A 109 5- Government Bonds Steady—@ailroad Bonds Somewhat Lower—Money on Call Easy at 1 a 2 Per Cent. Watt Street, Sarcupay, Sept. 2—6 P, x} 4s theatrical managers return to a well worn stock Piece when a novelty falls to draw, 60 did stock ex- change interest return to the favorite coal speculation. In attendance upon these was ceutred a crowd of deal- ers of high and low degree, while the other fancies wero lolt to what was possibly ‘a wise and salutary neglect.” Of the two great anthracite specuiations New Jersey Central secured by far the greater regard and responded by far more important Huctuations, if the term may be used for a succession of figures which tended nearly all one way, Openirg at 39%, a selling Movement commenced, which steadily forced dowao prices with scarcely Jet or hindrance to 35, at which tt tlosed for the day, having recorded the lowest range pf prices of the present decline. Over 35,000 shares ‘were brought to market, the greater portion being un Goubtedly lung stock, the last squeeze of the sponge tn, the bands of origimal and confiding holers and the ac- quisitions of such bulls as believed that the rupture of the combination meant hard pan for the stock, Tho incentive to this serious shaking out was due to tho Feport that a prominent ofliciai of tho road was in trouble, and that a long line of hypothceated stock had been soid tor his account As with ‘Jack’? in the rhyme, “Jill came following after” in the shape of Delaware and Lackawanna, but witn less impetuosity and at a re- Bpoctiul distance, the tumole being only trom 84 to 81%. Delaware and Hudson sagged two points in sym- pathy, though bears still showed themselves merciless in pounding with seller 60 options at 8to 4 per cent ander tho cash price. Nor wastho disaster in the Cen- tral property confined to the common stock, for the contagion spread to tho bonded debt also, the guaran- teed Lehigh and Wilkesbarre bonds being offered at 66 as against sales at 71}; at the first call, while the other issues of the company proper wore weaker by a hal{ to one per cent, Beside engrossing speculative attention the anthra- cite-trouble threw a gloom over the railroad list as well. Bulls lost their pluck as tar as any attempt to advance quotations went, and satisfied themselves with holding prices as nearly firm as possible, and thereby succeed- (ng in stopping a fail more serious in the extremes than bne per cent. Miscellaneous stocks, such as Western Union and Pacific Mail, wero even more neglected, 5,000 shares Deing the aggregate of dealings in the first and 500 in the second. As regards tho telegraph concern it is “billed”? for an extraordinary — performanco to take place in the immediate future, when an ascension is promised that will astonish a first elas baiioonist. Meanwhile stock jobbing Lord Bur- Jeighs Wander about, shaking their beads wisely and giving out points to all who ure venturesome enough to kick against the pricks. Toward tho close some things were a little stronger, Qs is apt to be the case on @ Saturday afternoon, but there was no decided improvement, and the floish of business was anything but encouraging for the buil side of the account.
