OYSTERS, (CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.} favored with the world’s goods. Contrary to the gen- erally secepted idea, the dealers state that as good and As sOund a oyster can be obtained in June as in No- vember, but prudential and economical reasons stand io the Way Of bringing the articio into market during summer, It even seems that if the supply was as pientitul and the prices even lower in the heated Season than in the cold there would not be a consump- tion at all equal tothe supply. Appetite for oysters fails when the thermometer goes beyond cighty Fees; it requires the bracing breezes of October or the ting blasts of January to freshen trafiic in the article. Indeed, wholessle dealers would have no great objec- Hon to a suspension of ull sales during the summer, believing that an entire abstinence trom the food few months would have the effect of vastly increasing the consumption during the remainder of the year. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. A Quiet Market—Speculators Waiting for Something to Turn Up. GOLD 1101-8 A 1097-8 A 110. Government and Railroad Bonds Firm and in Fair Bequest—Money on Call Easy at 11-2 a 2 Per Cent, THE NATIONAL DEBT STATEMENT. | Watt Srruzr, Fauvay, Sept. 1—6 P, M. ‘The difference popularly supposed to exist “twixt tweedledum and tweediedee”’ will give a fair idea as to the choice of either the bull or bear side in to-day’s market, Ifanythingthe bears had the best of it, tor ‘there was more fall than rise, more weakness than strength. At the send off there ovcarred a spasmodic Advance in New Jersey Cevtral and Delaware and Lackawanna, which carried both stocks % per ent above the initial prices; but the rest of the list Tetused to sympathizo und rather looked the other way, #0 the coal fuvorites being unable to struggle upward all alone speedily joined the ruck im the course to lower figures, ‘Tho decline was a very moderate one, however, and by no means of the galloping sort we have recently been avcustomed to, Generally fractional parts of a point comprised the variations, thus giving the lesser hghts of the market an opportunity to shine im a me- dium adapted to their peculiarly luminating powers, Luke Shore, which was such a hot favorite yesterday, had few courtiers to-day, aud by the abandon meut of the Osborn Mill phalanx, who had sold their siock out at something less than cost price, was left solely to the dty nursing attentions of the smallcr gambler. ‘The strongest fancy on tho list turned out to be Western Union, which, although its rise was limited to a balf per cent, showed its best figures at the close, The new doctors in attendance were liberalin their “acvice gratis” as to the policy of purchasing, while they promisea aspecdy strengthening of the stock and a sure recovery to 80. There were buyers of 15,000 shares, who tock the stock and the medi- eine on the faith that both would do them good, Timo will show whether the dose is tonic or cathartic. The halt inthe market was in a measure due to fresh reporta of further reducticns in railroad freights, it being given out that Pennsylvania Central had sliced off an additional five cents per hundred from their existing schedule, The roport failed to be confirmed, however, and later in the day lost any influence it might have had, As the market (after yesterdays’s fashion) turned on the pivot, and at threeo’clock showed a recovery of XM to 13 per cent trom the poorest quotations. Money remains at the stereotyped figures of two per vent, at which unlimited amounts areto be had on tall The loud calls were entirely without feature, ox- dept such as were presented by aquict firmness and Uminished business, Taken altogether, Sir Charles Coldstream’s complaint What ‘there was nothing in it” 1s as fair a criticism on yo-day’s business os can be suggested. ee ‘THR BALES TO-DAY. ‘The transactions of the Stock Exchange to-day ag. sregated about 108,718 shares:—New York and Hudson, M0; Erie, 6,500; Lake Shore, 15,500; Cleveland and Pittaburg, 143; Northwestern, 800; do. preferred, 1,400; Rock Island, 6,300; Pacifle Mail, 700; St. Paul, 5,400; Bt Paul preferred, 11,800; Obios, 2,500; Western Uuton, 11,700; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 24,200; New Jersey Central, 16,835; Michigan Central, 1,900, OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES, ‘The following table shows the opening, highest and lowest prices of the day :— 5 Opening, Highest, Lowest, New York Contral........ 106 106, 106 Eri - 1% 104 97% Lake Shore... wae OB bai Northwestern , seceee BOK 3T Northwestern preterred... 60 60 Rock Isiand 108% 104% Milwaukee ai ~. Fripax, Sept. 1—6 P. M. Tho trade movement has been irregular and fitful during the past week, some days showing a large busi- ness, While others were uuusualiy quiet. Some depart- ments of trade have been tolerably active right along, however, and presenting an unusually large showing for the week. In dry goods there has been a freo movement all through the week, and the demand for new fall descriptions of goods shows a steady increaso from day to day, the aggregate trans- actions of tho week being unusually heavy. The market: for both cotton and woollen fabrics has also shown groater strength and prices Lavo favored the seller for the first time in mavy mouths, Wool has met with free salo and tho market has shown increasing strength. ‘The improved feeling in the breadstuffs market noticed in our remarks a week ago has been sustained, and during the past few days wheat has been more freely taken, in part to arrive, for export at improved prices. The aggregate sales for the week, however, aco moderate. Flour bas fluctuated @ have been no Fadical fluctuations. been fairly active, but the tone of the market has not improved although choice samples have occasionally realized extreme figures, or about lc. # 2c. above the quotations at the current writ- ing. Oatshave generally ruled firmer. Whiskey has been nominal all through the week, tumbling down wonderfully at the close, and very little has been done. Provisions have been the particular shattlecock on ‘Change, having been knocked about ad Hiitum. About all the speculative feeling there is on ’Change centres in the hog product, and the bear interest having gained the ascendancy of late « perfect raid has been made during the week on both pork aud lard, both of which have been forced to @ lower figaro than has been known im this market for many months, Freights and charters have fluctuated about as little as anything, the rates being generaily weil sustained. ‘To-day (Friday) the markets showed few important chan Flour was dull, but nominally unchanged.
