Ww THE COAL TRADE. JDNEASINESS AND ANXIETY IN PHILADELPHIA— THE BEADING BAILROAD COMPANY MAKES A CONCESSION—MR, GOWEN KEEPS A 6TIFF UPPRR LIP—HIS REMARKABLE PREDICTION. Pmiapenruta, August 0, 1876. In the coal market in this city there is a univers! feeling of shakiness and uncertainty. The great au tion sale of yesterday and its emcet upon the futuro Gre the theme of general wonder and comment, and nobody seems to know what the result will be. Every man—with bis own private end to gain—!« anxtous to give the public histheory, and ove thing only seems certain—namely, that the newspapers which regard the extreme low prices at the Hanover square Auction sale yesterday as a certain augury of cheap coal for the winter and a-general good time for every- Dedy are not by any means ceriwin to be in the right Assuredly they are not, if a remarkable prediction | | Conservatory, where he had which Mr. Gowen, the President of the ading Ratt Poad, favored me with this morning can be relied apon. He said it with emphasis, knowing I was going to publish it, and is willing to stand by it But RYERYTUING 18 IN CONYUSION, and when I asked a long-headed operator this morning what is in store, he simply shrugged his shoulders, elevated his eyebrows and said, “Lord Knows what next, as the tadpole said when his tail dropped of.” Itwas hard to find prominent dealers to-day, many being out of town, scme in New York and some attending a meeting of operators, which took place in the Schuylkill region to-aay. No trustworthy person seemed willing to hazard a guess as to future prices until it is found out what every dealer is waiting for—whether or not the carry- ing companies will reduce their tolls. On that all de- pends, Said one:—"Will THE READING RAILROAD accept the situation and reiuce its tolls? Should this not be done it will cost moro to work than to stop, and the collieries will close. ‘The average price of coal for August was $230 at the mines, and now tho aver- age reduction at Port Richmond is to $213. Taking into accoant the expense of shipping the coal froin the mines to Scbuyikill Haven, which averages about sixty cents, if there is no reduction made in the tolls, the dealer would lose forty-treo cents if the coal was made a present to him at the mines. A ton of coal actually costs, with mining and transporting to market at present rates, at lcast $4.00, You see the sbsurdity ot supporing that it could be gold for $2.15 under present tolis.”” TUR GREAT MR. GOWRN. Mr. Gowen, Who, us prosident of the great transport- Jng company, was ‘the head and front of the gigantic Bombination, is always an interesting person to talk with, and the Hexatp correspondent called on him this Afternoon. He was besieged by coal dealers and op- erators, who wanted to know what was going to be the price of coal and when the company would announce its prices for September. Waiting ior the Henatp man to leave was a committce from the Coal Exchange who came oilicially to ask these quesnions, Mr. Gowen Bpswered everybody with a smiling, frank looking face, and seemed more like a Sunday School teacher than She grinding monopolist he ts pictured. A SURPRISING STATEMENT, “What will be the effect of this sule, in a few words?"? was the frst question. “It wiil accomplish just what the combination would dave done,” said he, with # bland and honest seeming mnile. Rather taken aback, 1 asked it the combination really would have cheapened prices. “Oh, yes,” us though hurtat the question. ‘But weren't you surprised at the extreme low Prices obtained at the sale, like everybody else??? “Well, it was about fifty cents a ton cheaper than I thought likely.” “Why did (be Reading coal bring lower prices than buy of the others ?””. “1 don’t Know; unless it wa because ours was in larger lots aud was sold among the last.” “Phen the combination realfy wanted to benefit the people ¥”” “THR OBJECT OP THE COMBINATION, as it was called, was simply to take out of the mines as znuch coul as the publig needed and no more, and at the same time to regulate prices according to 'a tixed and unvarying scale. ‘There was no business Teason why we should act otherwise than dairly. It was to the common interest to have the supply of coal regulated Justus inuch us was needed and no more. They never charged high prices tor coal. The fixed rates enabled the mavutacturer and every Dither business man using coal to make contracts based bn acertainty for 4 yeur alicad, for the prices of coal Were arranged on a fixed seale tor that time. The re- Suit of this sale will be to stop the production of coal In a great many regions, which, in a very short time will make tho demand execed'the supply, In that evont much ,higher prices will be realized than now, and higher than would have been under the combina: tion, You wil! see that this will be so “You can say that the Reading Hailrond Company, @ mecting of the directors to-day, reduced its rate: Sransportauon of coal. This will help to reduce the fost of coal and increase the product We have put the tolls down from $175 per ton to $125 and $1— $125 tor distribution to the local dealers and $1 for At delivery at Port Richmond for ship:nent abroad. duis lower rate wo will make more money as a railr company than we have done us a member of the com- Dination, managed as the combination was,’? Mr. Gowen then suid, with emphasis:—“There are a great many reasons why the combination was an advantage to the commuvity, and, mark my words, they will ad- mit that within six months. ”’ Upon being asked what he meant by this ominous, yet Lystenious Previctions. Mr. Gowen said that high prices would be one conse- quence and nncertaiaty aud tluciuation auother and, perhaps. worse one “There will be a fluctuating Market for coal,” be said, “which will be sometimes up do $12 per ton, as is was during tho war, and again jown $2; Whereas if the combination had re- Rained intact prices would bave beca controlled ind regulated, so that in no event wouid jhose engaged im the mining and carrying pf the coal make more than a fair, but always a uni- lorm and proportionate profit, while now prices will be $0 fluctusing that no man can make a contract with certainty. If the combination had not dissolved it would have been a good thing for consumers You can depend upon it prices will mot be permanently lower, Yhe combination would not have distolved bui for the dishonesty of one of its members. You understand)" “Do you anticipate any strike among the oper- atives ?” That 1s wu result of this business very gener- ally wuticipated.”” “No. Now thatthe miners are out of the bands of politicians who have been manipulating them, there is bo danger of that. They are reasonabie men and they want to work, and (hey will be content te take lower wages, “aig. Gowen it is ramored that on account of the ex- treme low prices at the sale yesterday some of the comn- panies Wili avail themseives of the provision releasing them in case of strikes, &c., and refuse to deliver.” “Phat is the usual thing. 1 think the coai will all be delivered. The sale was g bona fide one, certainly, 80 far as our © y was concerned. Besides, most of the coal that w: id is ready for immediaie deivery. All of 1 is mined." NO MORE SALES IN NEW YORK. As your correspondent was about leaving Mr. expressed his indignation that some of the ) papers stouid have spoken of himself and other honor- able gentlemen this morning as ‘Peter Funks.” He considered that they had been badly treated by the press of New York, aud be announced that yesterday's coal sule was the lust positively that shall ever take place in New York. In future Philadelphia shall re ceive the benetit of the preseace of the dealors who come to buy coal. wen York MEETING OF THE LBHIGH COAL OPERATORS, Brruiears, August 50, 1876. ‘The cos! operators of the Lehigh region met in the office of the Lehigh Railroad Company this afternoon. The meeting was tho lagest over held in the Lehigh Exchange, nearly every colliery in the region being represented, A proposition from the railway officials, placing the rate of freight at $125 per ton trom Penn Haven Junction to Perth Amboy, when coal averages $8 50 per ton mm Now York, and vo'side up and down OD that basis, Was rejected. The meeting adjourned without reaching @ satisfactory adjustment, and the probabilities are that there will’ be continued idleness at the mines. POLICE AS PAISONERS. HOW THE. ALLEN FOOLED CAPTAIN VAN DUSEN. Last night Captain Van Dusen, of the Fitteemtn pre- cinct, heard rumors that gambling was going on in No. 05 Bieeeker street, and sent OMcurs Carr and Howry, of his command, to that number with tnstractions to stay inside the coor until reiievod, The. Allen, the wel! known politician of the Eighth ward, who rents one of the floors, assured the ofscers that no gambling was going on, and freely opened his doors for their inspection. ‘Although no evidence, if any, was found, tho officers \nsisted upon remaming in the building. PELICIEN-C¥SAR DAVID. A cable despatch from London announces the death of Felicien-Cmsar David, the celebrated French musical composer, Tho deceased was born at Cadenet, in the department of Vaucluse, in 1810, and re- | ceived bis first lessons in music from his father, who was a musician. Ho attracted attention while still very young as a choir boy in the Church of tho Holy Saviour at Aix, and, having been admitted to the Jesuit College of that town, he soon became distin- guished for hig extraordinary memory and for his skill on the violim At eighteen ycars of age ho left tho college, erphan and without means, and went to work as @ lawyer’s clerk. He soon began to neglect his work, however, and became assistant conductor of the orchestra in ‘the theatre and clerk of the Chureh of the Holy Saviour at Aix. He went to Paris in 1830, one of his compositions hav- ing attracted the notice of Cherubini, He entered tho for masters Lesneur, | Fotis, Benoit and Reber, but he soon became ap en- | works, thusiastic advocate of the doctrines of St Simouisfa and composed all the —_cantieles sung by his contrires at Meailmontant, On the breaking up of that establishment he paid avisit to the East in company with Eufantin, and while the missionaries of the séct sought to propagate their doctrine, he employed hitnself collecting popular airs und ip seeking musica) inspiration from the Desert of sabara to the more civilized countries of Ast. Re- turing to France im 180, he commenced a loug strug- gle for famo inthe musical worid, His first publica- Uon, acollection entitied “Oriental Melodies,” mot with littie success and gave smail promise of the popularity whieh this kind of composition alterward acquired for him. In 1844 he finished at the Conserva- tory his “Desert,” the words of which were furnished by his friend aud compatriot, Colin. Its success was as complete as it was sudden, eral of the Paris theatres were rivals for the honor of presenting it, and at soou mudo the tour of Furope. Oh ali sides this souvenir of the Orient full of grace and Iresbuess and those perlocts imitations of homag Ie and tableaux from natore were applauded, and 1 Was admitted that tho imitation by music was carried 48 far as it Was possible to do so. His success became so complete that the musical publishers used every means in their power to procure something from his portfolio, und he was thus led to publish many things which had better have never seen tho hght. These appeared about the same tme as “Tae Swallows.” — After several journeys to Belgium and Germany M. David published his “Afoses on Mount Sina,” which did not come up to the general expectation, ‘The following year he gave his ““hristopher Columbus” to the public and partly recovered the ground he had lost In 1866 . David undertook a journey to Russia and visited St. Petorsburg and Moscow, where his works were played and obtained =a ‘odigious success. In dramatic music he produced The Pearl of Brazil,” a comic opera given at the ‘Dheatre Lyriquo in 1851 and produced since with suc- coxs; “Hereulaneum,’? “Lalla Rookb,” and other In 1868 he received the grand biennial prizo from the Emperor, and in the same year was named an officer of the Legion of Honor. THE BAVARIAN VOLKS FEST. THIRTY THOUSAND SOUTH GERMANS ENJOYING THEMSELVES AT JONES’ WOODS. Last evening tho Bavarian Volks Fest, which has lasted for throe days at Jones’ Woods, was closed by a grand performanco ropresenting the battle of Bunker Hill, During phe three days and nights of the festival 80,000 persons of both sexes Visited the grounds. ‘The management of the festival was in the hands of Major G. W. Sauer, who was elected Fost Marshal, and who attended to the guests conjointly with Martin Nacht- man, formerly Excise Commissioner and president of the Fest. Some idea may be formed of the appetites of the Bavarians from the fact that 25,000 dumplings have been ordered during the fest, and the quantities of sauer kraut, leberwurst, blutwurst and bratwurst that were de voured was in proportion to the number of dumplings. There were also shop dancers, Scotch bell ringers, pro- cessions and recitations by school children and other kinds of amusement, The victor of tho bowling alley, or kegeibahn, contested for three days, received a prize | of $100 last evening. The band on the ground was | dressed in uniforms made for a crack regimental band in Munich, and the unitoris worn by the soldiers on the grounds wero of sky Bavarian blue. They were ordered for the Fourth regiment of Bavarian infantry, who received high encomiyms from Prince Frederich-Karl during the Franco-Prussian war, Ma- jor Sauer, Who commanded the French armies that fought at Jones’ Woods in 1874 and 1875 in the sham battles of Sedan and Weissenberg, yesterday took comn- mand of the American patriots who were to fight the batule of Bunker Hill There were two companies of Colonel Unvbekant’s Eleventh regibent — and batteries = Band = Koo the First New York regiment of artillery, Battery K was under Captain Hoelsy and Battery B was in command of Lieutenant Ernest Foeller. This lat- ter gentleman personated the aracter of the British General Gage, while Major Sauer enacted the part of the heroic General Putaam, A fort was erected, in which the Amoricans took their stand, the British, under General Gage, brought all their six-pounders to bear, and smashed things for « few moments, and — then the American patriots, who were in Continental uniferm under Major Sauer, charged oct of the works, and, with a wild cheer, drove tho British into the river, and taey are running yet. Comptroller Green visited the park during tho evening and was cheered by the Ger- mans Who saw him accompanied by Major Sauer. SPARRING BOUT. COBURN AND DWYZR IM A THIRTY MINUTES’ GLOVE EXCOUNTER—THE MATCH A DRAW. About 1,000 spectators were present last evening at Contral Park Garden to witness the sparring match between Copurn and Dwyer, The spectators were very orderly, and everything passed off pleasantly, Bill Tovee, the vetern master of the ceremonies, officiated, The evening’s entertainment opened with a sparring bout between Ed Muliaban and Johony Saunders, and as they siugged one another pretty lively the spectators became quite gow! humored, and listened to the music from the Professor at the pianoforte with compla- cency. After a short delay the auaience became im- atient and once more ‘The Blue Danube’ and “The Thousand and One Nights”? floated out upon the smoky airand soothed the savage breast. Mr. Bob Carman and Mr. George McCarty, two gentlemen of the heht weight class, then mado their appearance, and Mr Carman, who had the advantage in the length of reach, opened the ball with a rattling lefi-nander on the left peeper of his opponent, Mr, MeCarty, although with twenty pounds the worst of the weights, proved himself the best sparrer. Mr. Austin and Mr, Mare then had a bout at Grweo Roman wrestling and gav the spectators a really interesting exhibition of the science in that sport, Afler a protracted struggle Mare won the first fall, Attor five minutes’ intermis- gion they resumed work and slung one anotver about the stage as if they were playing ina feather bed, Austin finally obtained a fall, Ono failforeach, Mr, William McClellan and Mr, Deter Croker then appeared with tue mitt ud bad & pretty set to. , They wero size larger than Messrs.
