GOLD STEADY AT 111 1-2. Money 1 and 2 Per Cent. on Call—Govern- ment Bonds Lower—Raiiway Bonds Firm—The Bank Statement. Wat SrRExr, } Sarurpay, August 12—6 P.M. Delaware and Hudson was the skeleton in the closet @f to-day’s proceodings and frightened away most of the strength which the market was inclined to show. A five per cent drop in ono day has goue far to seduce the distance between this stock und its coal-bearing ally, New Jorsey Central, while the fact that this oc- curred offorings of tractiona! shares shows, not 80 much the pressure of a bear attack, as a want of faith on the part of investors. a The other combination stocks, meanwhile, rested quietly, as mere lookers-on, exhibiting neither activity por marked fluctuation. Speculation was so thoroughly dull that tho weak- ness in Delaware and Hudson fora time held the rest of the market almost without change, but later on some spirit was plucked up anda pretty general ad- ‘vance took place among all tho favorites, Western Union and Michigan Central received Fan most particular attention in the way of magnitude of bperations, though those, by comparison, were limited mough. The Jatter, however, boro off the palm for variety in price, oscillating as it did betweon 42% and 44, winding up, finally, about midway between tho two. ‘The annual report of the Chicago and Northwestern road, though apparently a favorable one, had no effect ‘upon the stock, either in pou nt of activity or price. Tho remarks of the President showing what might have beon the case if things hadu’t happened as they fd are about as logicat as the usual run of theories which are based upon a very large ‘if.”” ‘There 1s a decrease of $1,050,000 in the line of legal tenders held by the banks, yet, despite this, there seems to be money enough left to bid for over $21,000,000 of Genova award bonds and to supply de- mands on ¢all 14g per cent por annum. At the close the whole list stiffened up, leaving rood foundation for operations ia the coming week, which it is to be hoped willbe more worthy of com- ment than those of the week just passed.
