BROOKLYN YACHT CLUB. @8 ANNUAL CRUISE TO THE EASTWARD—REN- DEZVOUS AT GLEN COVE—THE YACHTS IN THE FLEET. Guex Cove, L. 1, July 21, 1876. Iu accordance with the time-honored custom the Brooklyn Yacht Club are again on the eve of its aunual ernise to the eastward. Though the event, in the number of boats taking pari in it, seems less promis. jog than in years past, hopes are expressed, 4nd reasons even given, that the reunion will eclipse any like one preceding it, During yesterday afiernoon anid evening vessel after Vessel dropped its anchor off tois quiet retreat, and when the flagship at sundown fired ber gun @od hauled down ber colors, nine boats in ail were . Tepreseated, Most of thei experienced but littic dif- ity in the run up from Gowanus Hay, and nothing that occurred, sc far as learned, occasions remark. The day was fair for the rendezvous, and the large number of guests on board the boats were augmented by the arrival of owuers and frieuds on the Seawan- haka, from New York, which made the landing shortly after six o'clock. At eight o’clock the captains of the various yachts, Dy previous notification, assembled on the fingship Madeleine and talked of the movements of the squad- ron, It was soon settied that the boats should get un- der way this morning about cight o'clock and proceed to Mgrris’ Cove, where they will lay over night, and on Saturday start for Greenport, Here it is anticipated there will be a race for both schooners and sioops, and as the prizes that are to be offered are said to be valu- able an exciting contest may be expected. from that Sime on the captains will decide upon the places to be visited. Just upon the adjourument of the mecting on board the Sadeicine the news was Iashed across the wire to Commodore Dicker-on of the sad death oO: that spirited Yacutsman, Mr, Wiliam 1, Garner, together with bis Wie and Mivs Hunter, The intelligence could not at first be credited, aud despatches were seut to New York inquiring whut trath there was in the report. Too soon it was found to be true, Nothing tuat could huve occurred Would have for the time so efectu- ally dampened the ardor = and enthusiasm of the yachtsmen = usthis_ terrible news. Phough comparatively young in the pastune the owner of the Mohawk hud made a name in yacht- ing circles, second to nove in this or auy otber coun- try. From the tine he commenced to love the sport on the deck of the magic, through tue ownership of the Vixen, bis tirst boat, the Magic, and then bis last trait, ex-Vice Commodore Garner was ever looked upon as a model amateur sailer. There could have been no more appalling news’ to his friends and fellow yachts- men than this of his sudden and terrible death. What action the club wil: tuke in the premises is not yet known, but as Mr. Garner was a member ol the cub there will doubtiess be some expression of the great Joss :t has, a8 an organization, susiained, ited following are the yachts that compose the Jee SCHOONERS, Owner. ‘ommodore J. 5. During the cruise the British yacht Heien is expected to be allen in with, A squall trom the borthwesi cooled the atmosphere greaiih iast might. It. was taining early this morning, but now there are indications o! fair weather, ARRIVAL AT NEW HAVEN, New Haven, July 21, 1876. As deseribed in my communication of thit morning, the run (o this place was au exceedingly agreeable one, and bad it not been tor the sad news communicated to the tleet on the way, would have been one of unmixed Pleasure, Uil Matinicock Point the sight was unusually ani- Mating, though the number of yachts in triendly com. petition was small. With tbe reliable Clio in the lead, | the stanch Sea Witch next iu order, the slippery Madel2ine third, Mystic fourth, the new sloop Niantic fifth, Favorite next, and then the Comet, but little was. Wanting to make the picture preity in the extreme, ‘The Tidal Wave's owner having entered her forthe Brenton Keet race of Monday next, sue accompanied the boats a short distance only, and theu went to the westward iu order to be in readiness to start for that Important event At Sb. 45m. the Clio bad ivereased her lead of th fleet fully haifa mile, with the Sea Wich as before but the Madeieme was iast picking her up, while the Niantic was showing ter slippery heels, and, by the way, during the run here this new boat has shown that she has much speed. The Comet at this time was a Jong distance to the leeward of the flogstip, while the Mystic and Favorite were stil! further astern. Filteen minutes later the Sadeleine pessed the Magic to wind- Ward, and from (hat point on she was rapid.y securing the leading position. Occasionally the wind was very hgbt, and during much of the tne it was pufly, while now and then it came in big ankks.? Soon all the interest was centred on the Cilio, Madeleine and Niantic, for the others were so rapiily dropping astern (bat it was evident noth.ng like a tace could be expected. Atten o'clock the Madeioine shot through the ice of the Clio, having beeu nearly jwo hours in accomplishing it, though the lattor car- fled more gail than the tlagebip. The Favorite and seh iteam yacht New Amsterdam were out of sight at this | joncwui OW Norwalk Islands, the Madeleine was ing the Cho sbout a quarter of a mile. the showing the course to the Coimet — fuliy threeguarte,ra of a mile ahead, with the Niantic next doing excellent work, aud the balance as beiore given. Here the America, the new sloop of Mr. Tresiweil, was sighted, she having lett Glen Cove wbout 6. 30m., making ber way slowly to destina- tion, At 10b, 23m., the Clo sent down her Jibtopsail, it no longer being of service, and at 10h, 4m, she picked up and passed the America which bad ‘vow dropped to third position. Saintes were exchanged with the Clio as they parted company, aud though the Awwerica’s owner coud not lead the fleet imo Morris Cove he seemed just as happy as if be were able to do 80. At 11h, 45m, the Niantic also placedthe America Astern, and off Stratford Pot light the Madeleine had such Mmanding position that she stowed her maintopsail aud ‘oresail, rauning the balance of the dis- tance under mainzail alone. The. the Comet lefe the fleet and stood away for Greenport, and, ax the Mystic had already adopted this course, there remained but few vo anchor in Morris Vove, ws ordered by the Com- modore. The yachis arrived as follows:— dt. M. - 1 03 America. Pavori w Atmscerdaim, Not tim'd lead- Cho WM. a ae 1 The distance, over forty miles, was thus made in about five hours by the Commodore's and Vice Commo- dore’s boats, Soon everything was made snug by the early argivais, preparatory to remaining until to-mor- row mofning. At daybreak, or shortly atter, they are expected to leave for Greenport, where oiber yachts will be found. The athletic sports were concluded at Glen Mitchell to-day, The air having cooled and the track crusted by yesterday’s rain put matters in excellent trim for good sport, and after a little delay the three-mile run was called at about balf-past ten. There were five entries for this event—two from Union, two trom Wesleyan and ove from Dartmouth; among them Frear, the Union stroke oar Oniy two started—Hays and E. C, Stin- son, of Dartmouth. inson went in 3,000 feet ahead of his adversary, and looking all over a winner, in lim. and 2ls., the fastest time by far that was ever made by any Amer- ican student, and 4748, better than Monell’s fatpous time last year, Hays follows in 23m,, and neither looks much doue. ‘THE ONK-MILE WALK. Among the six who came up the score for this in- teresting race were Noble, of Princeton; Merritt, of Bowdoin; Watson, who walked so gamely in the three miles yesterday and broke down, and Driscoll, of Will- jams, Who was so feartuily u: last year at the cud of the seven-mile walk. Springing away very last at the word, and looking as if all were running, they at once strung out in the following order :— Driscoll, Watson, Merritt, Woodbridge (of Union) and | Noble. Merritt ‘got enough of it about 400 fect down | the second quarter, und dropped out, At the gate Watson gocs by Driscoll, but in a moment the long six-looter—tor, by the way, he looks larger every way since last year—is abend of him again, aud both going home at a great pace, he is thrown out by the referee just befure the finish, and Watson wins, to the great delight of his friends, who surround him, and he walks off briskly to dress, sheltered by an umbreila. ‘Hoo! ray! Y s the new shout ity of New York taities is rightly proud. IN THE GRADUATES’ MILK RUN Downs, of Wesleyan, 18 well chased by Philler, of the University of Pennsylvania, uot up to the quarter mile, when the latter, saying “I can’t stand this to- day,” and drops back fast, stepping out at the halt and ‘ng Downs finish at his leisure, which he does in fine torm, dropping bis hands and running in in bm, 388, THE mIGu sUMP. Mann, of Princeton, who threw the base ball so well yesterday, pressed Pryor, of Columbia, for a while and did good jumping, their two styles being entirely diffe: ent. He exemplilying completely the sideways ran and juwp while Pryor ran straight at the bar, and after many times clearing it with the utmost grace, at last winning by jumping. IN THE MILE RUN Stimson, the fast Dartmouth man, again appears, T. R. Green, of Princeton, being his Sole rival. But, to the general surprise, the Jattor ruus away trom him at | once, and by the quarter has put him 150 feet behind. | Here Stim says as he passes, ‘“He’s too much for me.” Bat bis attention is called io a} fact which does him good, for Green had | been holding his right hand bard against | his side, which almost certamly meant side ache, | And sure enough, though 200 feet ubead at tbe half, nis stertorous breathing tells the story, and he gradually falls back, till the plucky Dartmouth boy is level, then passes him, and in response to “Stitason, make your usual spurt,” obeys orders jike a man, and finishes in 4m, 53448 —good time, indeed, for a fellow who had through what he had to-day. So ended a capital port, and all who saw it were pleased, THE BERDELL-MURRAY TRAGEDY. MURBAY DEAD—THE CASE STILL IN CcOURT— BERDELL’S WITNESSES SWEAR THAT MURRAY HAD A PISTOL ALSO—THE INQUEST.
