In Washington the other day the remains of colored man were found in s mackerel barrel. The arms, lega and head had been chopped and severed in ashocking manner. It was soon discovered that the deceased’s wife was the author of her husband's death and mutilation. They lived at No. 616 Second street, Northwest. The Washington Star says:—On Friday, late in the evening, the police made a thorough search for the murderess, who nad fled, and they learned that she had been seen on tho Rockville road, and at an early hour he proceeded to Perry’s farm, near the Presbyterian churcb, about seven miles out, and thers found her aad took her in custody. SHR APPEARED TOTALLY INDIFFERENT, and was disposed to talk of the murder as a matter of little consequence. Sho was immediately brought into Georgetown, and about nine o’clock she was taken to Police Headquarters, where she wus turned over to the detectives. She answers pretty well the description given in the Star of yesterday, with the addition of a slight scar over the left eye, made, as she states, some months sinee by Turpin’s fist To a representative of the Star she stated that she believed she was thirty or thirty-tive years old; that sbe was born im Alexandria, and was a slave of the Taylor family of that eity until the war, spending most of ber life asa house se! and since ber marriage to Turpin, which was during the war, by Rev, Pompey Tenney, in the First ward, sue hus made her living by working out by the day. In the room adjoining the cells at headquarters she SAT CHEWING TOBACCO and apparently uncoueerned, and continued her state- + ag follo' talking very fast:—‘He wouldn’t take me to the picnic on Seventh street on tl ‘ourth, say- ing be hadn’t money, but be took one of the childre: and I went there, sir, but couldn't go in, tor I hada’ no money, and I stood by the fence. When we got home that bight he quarrelled with me, and | asked, ‘What is the use of quarreling?’ He then threaened to stump my guts out. Al awhile he became quiet and we went to bed. The next morning he /are up and we commenced to qnarrel again, and | asked why he dida’t take me to the — and he said, ‘What’s use of talking; 1 told you hadn't any money,’ and tore my dress. He went out, but came back and got bis breakiast, and then commenced to qnarrel agaim and struck me with his fist and called me a stinking slut. Ho then grabbed the axe and struck at me and I dod; it. He put the axe down behind the door and I pi itup. hen struck me on the head (indicaing the left forehead), saying, ‘I'll go to jail for you.’ I then PICKED THE AXE UP AND STRUCK unt, knocking him down; after he fell he said, ‘Never mind; wait till I get up, and I'll kill you; 1 mean te hang’ for you;’ he lay there groauing, bat didn’ groan long, and after awhile I tound ne was dead, cut off Lis head; then I cut off nis arms and legs; I put the body out on the ash pile first, and the other pieces afterward; I hardly knew what I was doing at the timo—I didn’t know what I was doing at the timo. Q. Did you whitewash the body? A. No, sir; I put the lime on him to keep him from smelling; the two children were home that night, and stayed there with me; ne didn’t smell much that night; 1 didn’t tefl the children that I cut his throat; I didn’t cut bis throat, and the only thing I used was the short handled axe, and when it was over | washed it; I didn’t put the body and legs out of the window; there was nobody about, and I curried them to the ash pile; before I took them ont and before | cut him up I took his clothes off and put them in the barrel. Q Why didn’t you pat your dress there? A. I for- got it; the blood on it did not come from him; HE USED TO QUARREL with me right from the first and knock me about; he did this with bis fist (pointing to the scar over bet eye). Q. Don’t you know that you had better take to yous Bible and prayers? For the first time she showed feeling, and her eye moistened a little as she said, “You atn’t going to hang me, are you? I hope you won’t hang me. ‘Deed, sir, I didn’t know what I was doing. I was in a passion ana he strock me first.” She continued, saying that when she left home at balf-past five o'clock tm the morning she Sntended to go to the station house and tell why she did it, but she recollected that her aunt used to five in Bladensbu: and she went there but could not find her, she walk out on the railroad and cut across the country, searce knowing what she wus doing, and stopped at the house where she was arrested to inquire for a service place, and they told ber she could stay all night. ‘On being asked if the moon did not affect her she sald that sometimes it did; that her head was skinaed once and when in the sun bead felt curious. She further stated that there was not much blood in the body and what littie there was she first washed up and then whitewashed over it, AME HAS AER PICTURM TAKER. When it became known that the murderess was in castody at hoadquarters an immense crowd of all colors and ages gathered about the building. Some of the party spread a report, to get the crowd from the front of the building, that she was to be taken out the rear door, and vory soon the alley was fall, as well as thestreet in front, Lieutenant Kelly, Detective Mo- Eltrest and a posse ot officers started with her throug! the rear of headquarters and Price’s stables to Gardner’s photographic gallery to have her picture taken, and were soon surrounded by a dense crowd, who followed them tothe gallery. Here the crowd swelled, blocking up the avenue and rendering it almost impossible to pass. 1¢ was with comsiderable difficulty that the officers re- turned with ber to headquarters.) Here was al- lowed an interview with her counsel, Mr. R. J. Mai and RD. Ruffin, which lasted for hour or more Coroner Patterson left a commitment on the verdict of the jury, on which she was taken to jail with the prisom- erg from the police court. MORE GAS.
