Money on Call 2 and 21-2 Fer Cent—Govern- ment Bonds Steady—Railroad Bonds More Active and Firm—Invest- meat Shares Steady. Watt Street, } ‘Tuvrspay, July 6—6 P. ‘The tendency of the stock market to-day bas been downward, in spite of the efforts of the few bulls who have taken the bit in their teeth for the Purpose of causing an advance. In fact, there are not a few intelligent observers, disconnected from any in terest and therefore not likely to be biassed in their Judgment, who believe that the engineers of the late rie are now adroitly selling stocks and pocketing the profits that have been gathered in their several neta. {t is but natural that a reagtion should occur. The temper of the street is not favorable to a protracted campaign on the long side of the market in the absence of the reserve torcea, which in ordinary times inspire confidence in a forward movement, Mere skirmishing by abalf dozen sharpshooters is not by any means & prelude to a genoral engagement, and, hence, when they cease firing quiet is restored in the camp and little or no harm is the result outside of their own coterie. In the contest to-day only 77,000 shares found a mar- ket, and the majority of brokers contented themselves with simply looking on. Western Union and Lake Shore, as usual, were sent to the front The former ‘was wounded to the extent of 7% per cent., declining from 71% to 70%, and closing at 71. The latter stood Are a trifle better, the highest price of the day peing 58%, the lowest 68%, and the close B85. Michigan Central likewise drooped trom Wy to 61%. Late in the day Jersey Central was forced into action at about 721, and made 4 brief stand at 7434 a 7434, but retired from the tleld ‘ooring 7344 a 73%. Delaware and Lackawanna, as somparod with yesterday’s figures, suffered a loss of Se per cent. The Granger stocks were comparatively quiet, One would suppose that with the abundance of cap- ital awaiting employment the investment shares would attract attention, but beyond a transaction here and there, at prices which have varied only a trifle for many days, this department shows unchanged dulness, In fact money is seeking use more in government and first class railway bonds, on which no default has been recorded, than in the speculative fancies, which have become mere footbalis to be tossed about with every whim of a close corporation of wealthy stock gam- plers, It is, perhdps, well enough to state here that one of the causes assigned for the movement in Jer- sey Central was the rumor that the company had suc- ceeded in negotiating the remainder of its consolidated bonds, These sold in the open market to-day at 102 THE SALES TO-DAY.
