FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Shier aehate dvr orm er cals te Kew Yor FACTS AND FIGURES YOR THE CURIOUB, Watt Steer, July 3, 1870. A'though the Exchanges are closed, incidents in the the financia! world are still interesting to alvrge class whose business it isto dwell upon facts and figures, and from them draw the inferences upon which opera- lions are based, It is for this reason that in he Other matter pertinent to this column we publish from the advance sheets of Poor’s Manual, a number of in- Seresting facts connected with the growth of our rail- ay system. From this statement it appears that th® total earnings of the 8,876 miles of railroads im opera- tion in 1851 were $39,463,35%, or $4,447 per wile; for the 71,759 miles, whose operations are reported for 1875, $503,065,505, or $7,011 per mile, the earnings we! The ngs from freight in 1851 were $20,192,104; in awe 960,234, an increago of over 1,700 per cent ‘in freight receipts iu the last quarter of « century. ‘The gross egrnings of our railroads jfor 1875 are less by $17,400,511 than for 1874; but the falling off in net ‘earnings hus been only $4,064,520, he total net for last year being $186,596,488. Notwithstanding the falling of tn earnings, the dividends paid amount to $7,251,266 more than in 1874, being $74,204,208 for 1875, against $67,042,942 for the previous year, The dividends equal & 38 per cent on the $2, 198,601,281 of capital stock in- Vested in ali our railroads, good, bad and indifferent. Iv tea fact worthy of notice in this connection that Wirile this is the Centennial year of our national exist- ence, it is-also the semi-Centennial of the first year | What the Erie Canal was opened tor commerce aud of | she chartering of the first railroad in the Unived States, It is also the quarter-Ventennial of the opening of the Erie and Hadson River railroads, giving us unbroken ral) connection with the great lakes, Nothing shown | at the Great Exposition at Philadelphia can compare | with the increase of the railroad traille of the country ag an illustration of its material progress for the lust twenty-five years.
