DECLINE IN GOLD. Capital a Drug end Money Bssy—-The Movement in « Dailway and Government Bonds—Mining Intelligence. Wau. STReer, Sunpay, June 25, 1876, ‘There are few events of sufficient importance to be posted ip the ledger of thi ke. Business in the stock market has been causally dull, sbowing an indisposition on the part of those whose capital omables them to give reul strength and consist- ency tothe market to join im what is clearly a gamble between afew local operators. Brokers’ offices ai comparatively deserted, clerks are idie, expenses are i aR aa the feeling of depression is almost ‘universal, So far as speculation is concerned—euch as it le—the Principal feature was the strength of the granger stocks, which were marked up to a point that enabled Bot a few of the ancient holders to realize a fair profit for their patience. Increased earnings are reported on ‘these lines aa the result of a sharp movement of grain, and the “point”? has undoubtedly been well utilized. ‘The compactness of the cliques engaged in manipulat- ing Northwest and St, Paul is the chief secret of their success. .) In other securities, like Western Union, Pacific Mail ‘and Lake Shore, the fluctuations bave been more or less suggestive of lacteal tactics, prices acting and re- heting obedient to the whims of the bold players whose little piles are at.stuke, Tne “point”? that a dividend will be surely paid by the latter continues to be freely Uroulated. We can obtain no truthful information on Whe subject, New York Central remains quite steady At 106 a 106, notwithstanding the unfavorable bulletins dally published concerning the condition of the vener- able Commodore, The contracts that have been‘ made with this com- pany by shippers to carry freight at present low rates antil February and even later, with the privilege of say further reduction that may. be made, are regarded \s inimical to the best interests of the line, and sug- jeativo of a determination to fight in the pending wer ¥ the bitter end, Much interest attached during the week to the er- satic course of New Jersey Central, which, after run- jing down to 12%, was met by a statement of Premaent Jounston that things ure not so bad as they might bo ind promise to be a great deal better, whereupon the ‘shorts’ rushed-in to cover and advanced the figures to 78, Subsequently it further declined, but the close presented the evidence of a sustaining power by rallying to 753g. Delaware and Lackawanna likewise suflered from depression in the. early part of the week, the opinion apparently being treely shared that bottom bas not been reached in any of the coal carrying stocks. The Michigan Central party succcedea in putting their Javorite up to 49 and are predicting yet higher figures but in the face of a summer market and the absence of @ legitimate demand for even the specialties itis dificult to see on what grounds a permanent upward movement can take place at the present time in any stock on the list, It ta but fair to say that there is a small constituency of prophets on Wall street who do not look on the ex, isting situation through the goggles of melancholy, and Tecommend their iriends to avail themselves of pregent low prices, ana by buying ‘‘along the line” be prepared foran autumn rise, While this sanguine class are not themselves openly setting the example, and are simply eloquent to the audience that surrounds the stock.indicator, the remoteness of the result makes the prediction plausible, and is worth remembering. Your small operator, however, is generally too impecunious to walt for Jarge profits or take the chances of a three or five per cent decline againstan advance of ten or filteen per cent three months hence. He * Counts time by purse throbs, Not by figures on the dial. ‘THE TRANBACTIONS OF THE WEEK. ‘Tho following table represents the opening, highest and lowest sales, regular way, of the principal stocks during the’ past weck, togecher with the number of shares dealt in:-— No. of Open- High- Low. The total imports of merchandise since January for by $1 053g this year wero $153,310,439, against $176,747,337 for the corresponding period in 1875, and $211,163,581 ja 1874. GOVERNMENT BONDS. ‘These have beew inactive demand during tho week by institutions and private capitalists. At frst they were strong, but later, in sympathy with gold, they declined, which induced still further orders that could not be supplied, owing to the small number of bonds offering, STATE BONDS. In the bonds of the Southern States there has been a better demand at firmer figures, though the dealings were the largest in Tennessees and Louisianas, On the lavter interest is now being paid. They represent sixty per cent by composition of the original debt of the State. By the amendment of the State constitution, ratified by the people, the whole State debt is limited to $15,000,000, The old debt is being cousolidated at the rateof sixty ver cent, and this $15,000,000 provi- sion will more than cover the oytstaading bonds. The inquiry for Missouri bonds brought the price of plain sixes to 108, The District of Columbia 3.658 were firm, and advanced on the passage of » bili making stauding provision for the interest in place of a eemi-annual ap- propriation. RAILROAD BONDS. These maintained steadiness and im some instances, as for instance the lines not involved in the presen, rivalry for frei, hts, were strong and active, Tho Pasific issues were higher. Capital ig evidently seeking to this class of securities a chance for employment, and good bonds will reap the beneilt. MINING STATISTICS. Until within avery recent period it has been the common opinion of those who have not acquainted themselves with the statistics of the business that mining for the precious metals is the most hazardous, and, upon the average, the least remunerative of all industrial pursuits. We commend to such as atill hold to that view the following excerpt from a trustworthy authority. ‘The allowance for expenditures seems to be liberal, while the figures as to the production aro actual and apparently indisputable. “By careful search among the records of all gold and silver mining companies incorporated in the United States, it has been estimated that about $600,000,000 have been subscribed toward mining and milling com- panies, from the time of the discovery of gold in Cali- fornia, up to the beginning of 1875. This figure repre- sents the total capital stock and assessments oi all companies of which record can be found. About sixty percent of this figure, or $360,000,000, was paid in cash; the balance still remains as paper. Now what have been the results? The following will show ap- proximately the whole thing:— Bullion produced... +++ +++ $1,088,000, 000 Intrinsic value of mineral lunds working . up to 1875 only, counting the produc- tion a8 a profit of ten per cent per aa- DUM. seceseres von seseeveneensseen 160,000,000 | «3,338 0 (000,000 '360,000, 000 Eatimated value of surtace improvements, 200,000, 000 Labor of 10,000 meu at $4 per day for 26 An gicghl ++ $860,000, 000 <._ 1,878,000,000 $2,43%,000,000 —or a little more than $60,000,000 per year (part of this being permanent improvement), which, upon an investment of $360,000,000, represents a profit: of about sixteen per cemt per annum from the date oLthe dis- covery of gold im 1849 till 1875."
