FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Stock Market. Irregular, Feverish and Lower. The GOLD 112 1-2 A 112 8-8. Money on Call 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent—Govern- ment Bonds Strong and Active—Railroad Bonds Firm—Investment Shares Steady, Excepting Jersey Central and Delaware and Lackawanna. Watt Stax } Toxspar, June 20—6 ri x Old Mortality was called upon to-day to affact s mar- ket, which a trust in living issues has failed to do, If, in the nature of .matters commercial, there is nothing to invite a rise, brokers vote that there shall be some- thing to create a fall, So to-day they have been in a skeli and crossbones mood, and have gloated over the anfavorable reports of Mr. Vanderbilt’s health like an andertaker over a corpse. This was practically exem- plifed in a sharp and successful attack upon Lake Shore and Central and Hudson, which produced a de- cline in the frst from 55 to §3% and in the second a { drop to 105, or two points from yesterday's prices, Of course there was no rhyme nor reason for the weak- ness, as Mr. Vanderbilt's condition 1s woll understood, and the effect of his demise has been practically dis- counted long ago; but in these dull times any straw is taught at which is likely to produce fluctuations, and the change in the Commodore’s health was a particu- larly tickling one to-day. It is not to be denied, however, that thevever in- creasing dimuess of the black diamond properties hetped materially to foster the bearish feeling, for Jersey Central broke from 75 to 7234, and Delaware and Lackawanna, which bad strugglea up trom 10514 to 1063, in the early hours, lost all it had gained before the second call. Western Union was equally de:ponding with the othor speculatives, breaking down nearly a point from 6934, n spite of the dividend which the directors, as sponsors, have promised and vowed In its name. After ‘two o'clock the stock sold (dividend off) and closed at 6744, or equal to the morning price of 68%. Tho infection even spread to the Western stocks, which lately have been advancing on their own hook, with a right of way which, like Robirson Crusoe’s, “there was none to dispute;” but the ‘‘miching mal- ‘echo” which had seized upon the two favorites be- witched our grange specialties also, and carried them down more than 1 per cent from best quotations: Toward the close the Commodore was reported bet- |- ter, and the market rallied with him as though prices were a pulse under some stock doctor’s thumb, which beat in unison with the physical oue in Fourth street. Thus the deciine of the morning was in a measure re- sovered, having proved a godsend to both bulls and bears, but leaving things ina state of uncertainty that Dundreary himself would fail to understand.
