FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Speculative Shares a Trifle Firmer—Sharp Decline in Coal Carrying Stocks. GOLD STEADY AT 112 1-2. Money on Call 2 and 2 1-2 Per Cent—Govern- ment and Railway Bonds Steady— Investments Generally Firm. Watt Srrzzr, } Moxpay, June 19-6 P. There was a disposition to let well enough alone this ‘morning, if not even to agvance prices, but the coal ‘stocks broke out with a fresh exhibition of weakness and alarmed the whole list. Not badly, however, for the dec!ine in other things was limited to & percent br 80, and was chiefly shown in Lake Shore, which fell off from 5534 to 54%, and in Western Union from 68% 26834. Indeed the St, Paul and Northwestern shares Fefused to be scared at ail, and assumed a detant front in the shape of better figures, The Old Broad street party, which has been dry nursing their fayprites through good and ill report, still occupy their former Sairey Gamp position and by caretul attention, have succceded in licking their bantling into about the most favorable financial shape of any railroad securities in the list There is no doubt that these lines are doing a profitable business at paying rates, which is likely to continve so long as grain flows Eastward, and they themselves keep out of the cutthroat cumpetit.on which the great trunk lines are indulging tn. There is somewhat of a pause in the Lake Shore movement, although in magnitude of operations.1t stood ut the head of the list. There was no evidence that the reported manipulators were acting at all, aud the stock was left to be guided by tho “Judge” and his jury of fellow scalpers, At the very cnd Luke Shore rallied up to 55, with rather a firm tone to proceedings. Western Union at one time betrayed great weakness, being offered down to 6834 1m such a menacing manner that there was a general standing from under. During the last half hour, however, a prominent broker who had just arrived from the ‘‘sad tea waves” of Fire Island dashed into the market a8 he is wont to do into the surf and slashed about with the result of accumulating a considerable amount of Mock and of marking the price up to 69, the highest point of day. To-morrow the transfer books close for the promised 1% per cent dividend, which will probably be paid, despite reports to the contrary and the doubtful sources from bine the money has been procured, The stocks of the coal combination do not seem to be having a very cheeriul time of it with all their monop- oly. Yoo may load your horse to water, but you can’t make him drink, and the combination may carry its coals to market but it can’t force buyers. Therefore, their product remains a drug on tho market, which bids fair to physic stockhulders of other companies than New Jersey Central. There was a re- port to-day that Delaware and Hudson had swallowed the pill which would result in the passage of the dividend, and the consequence was stumble in the stock from Saturday’s price of 108 to 106. Jn sympathy with the above New Jersey Central receded from 78 to 75, and Delaware and Lackawanna from 106% to 104%. In the final dealings there was a tally of about ono per cent. to supply the short de- mand and to realize the profits of the day. As awhole the market was dull and pretty much left to the predatory attacks of the guerillas, the com- Manding generals who usuaily “shape the ends’ of matters keeping sedulously aloof. TUE RAILROAD WAR ‘ presents no new feutures, It has vow lasted for neariv two months and the motive for a settlement is daily diminished by the making of contracts with the prin- cipal shippers, both Kast and West, to transport freight at existing rates fora period extending from six Months even tou year. A glance at the tabi below will show how severe and bitter the fight bas be- come, The rates of January and February, 1875, are of the rail- those that werd fixed, by the .comprom) roada after the cutting that followed the opening of the Chicago Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, during which the rate on grain to New York was reduced to thirty cents. RATES OX WEST BOUND FREIGHT. lst dtd Ath Spt eldss, class, class, c.ass, class, January, 1875..... 0c, T5c, Oe, = 4a June, iste we, 25 Ye Ide, Ibe. From tho West there 18 little to come except fourth ciass and grain, which in February, 1876, were 35 cents against 20 now, The rates given for 1875 are nearly 50 per cwt. below the average rates prior to 1873. While tho foregoing are the all rail rates to and from Chicago as published, and at which long contracts have been made—the rates to and from intermediate and competing points being made upon this basis—it is as- serted that in special cases a reba from even these low prices, On west bound fourth and special classes, by rail to Buffalo and thence by lake to Chicago, therates are 11 cents, And on grain from Chicago to Boflaio the rate is 24¢ cents per bashel by lake, thence by canal to New York 6 cents more. LEGAL COMPLICA‘IONS, A complicated caso of alleged conspiracy to defraud came up in the afternoon session of the Fifty- seventh Street Court yesterday, in which James J, A, Bruce, of No. 120 Broadway, was the complainant, and Thomas W. Wyatt, a lawyer of No, 21 Park row, and Wellington A. Carter, a merchant of No, 62 Cort | landt street, wore the defendants. It appeared tha Bruce is the executor for three persons named Ethma B. Bruce, Elivso B, Melvin and William ©, Stout, Parties for whom Wyatt acted as counsel obtained a Judgment against the estate of those for whom Bruce was executor in the courts of Weatchester county for the sum of $80. Mr, Brace knew nothing of the proceedi by which this judgment was obtained, Wyatt, it is alleged, then procufed a tranecript of the judgment, which he entered in the County Clerk's office in this city, He next got Sheriff O’Brien to levy on the premises No. 109 East i first street, which belonged to the estate, although there was sufficient property to satisiy the judgineut in Westchester county if they had seen ft to set: upon it, The house, which was worth $13,000, was sold for $189, and after Mr. Wyatt aud his client, Mi Carter, were satisfied the remainder was claimed the Shoriff, Possession was still to be obtain however, of the house, and this wi no small difficulty to get’ over. But Wyatt, itis alleged, was equal to the emergency. A men named Dunn was brought into the piot, and he leased he house from Bruce for a year. Having obtaiued, jon of it be transferred itover to Wyatt and Car- d and sold and resoid, until it changed hands several times within a sbort space, and then Mr, Brace became at last acquainted wito the plot by which wis wards bad been swindied. He commenced proceedings forthwith to recover the house on the ground of conspiracy to deiraud, and succeeded, after a lengthy litigation in the Superior and Supreme courts, in obtaiuing a judgment in his favor. Judge Sedgwick, it is said, in rendering the decision characterized bee toy saving by Wyatt and Carter as a gross outrage. hile the Itigation oy Wid Bruce was being carried ov a man named Cotton W. Bean began an action to forclose a mortgage on t house, $0 a8 to complicato matters ‘and prevent by that means the recovery by Br of the house. But thi ike ull the others inade to provent the decision in wi favor, failed, and the house is now in the hands of its righetal owner. Mr, Bruce has commenced criminal proceedings against Wyatt and Curter, with the view of punishing them, for he bolds them to be the principals im the alleged conspiracy, Tt is due to the defendants to stato that they deny the charge in toto, and that they will, they claim, be able in an examination to disprove the allogatioua here made, Wyatt has not yet been arrested, and Carter was altowed to go until to day on the responsibility of his counsel, SUNDAY LIQUOR.
