FINANCIAL AND COMMERCEAL The Stock Market Dull, Feverish and Irregular. GOLD STEADY AT 112 5-8 Woney on Call 2 1-2 Per Cent—Government Bonds Strong—Railway Bonds Firm— Investment Shares Steady. Wan. Sraerr, Faipay, June 16—6 P. M. ‘The buffetin boards in frout of the telegraph oflices attracted more attention this morning than did the tape of the stock indicator. Almost every broker has B trifle bet on the result of the Convention, and the ehange of venue to the speculative mind was retresn- ing from its novelty, Consequently, the chances of the Presidential candidates overshadowed the familiar at- tractions of the stock fancies. Still there was a fair amount of buginess doing, the yarger part being confined to Lake Shore as usual, thongh the aggregate of sales showed a considerable failing off trom yesterday, ‘The firmness so clearly to be seon in Lake Shore at the close yesterday was more fully developed in the early dealings this morning, with the result of ad- ‘vaneing the quotation from 5434 to 54%. and of holding it steady between these two points until nearly three o’clock, when tho price receded to the opening figures of the day. Weatern Union was not in sympatby, as it was next in order of activity, and sold at from 6834 to 69, with a fall back of 3 at the close, There was almost as much attention paid to the Western stocks as to the Telegraph fancy, at generally Improving prices, and with alike Foca in final dealings, ‘The only positively weak stock on the Nat was to be found in the New Jersey Central, which gave way from 81 to 7934 under gales of some 2,500 shares, the result of a report that the coming dividend was to be passed ‘nm toto, How anything difforent was to be expected under the dismal showing of the last report is strange enough, but it would appear as if somo pertinacious holder of the shares had just awakened to a realization of the situation. Contral and Hudson bad at one time the elasticity of the India rubber man, for on sales of 200 shares it bounced down from 10834 to 107, and bounced up again to 108, at about which quotation it remained for the rest of the day. For a long time no day has been sc free from reports, good or ill, or so destitute of any information bearing upon the market as the present one, Things were left to take care of themselves, which they did in a manner that showed the entire list of shares and bonds to possess a degree of latent strength that is epcouraging for the future, THR SALES TO-DAY. M. Commercial reporters continue to hear the same complaint as to the general depression in trade circles, and though the expressions vary somewhat from day to day, there is no mistaking the general meaning of them—< ¢, the merchandiso markets continue to be characterized by the same Quietude that has obtained so. long, and during the past week the situation of affairs bas been rendered still more unsatisfactory by the comparative inaction and consequent reaction in the breadstuffs market. The cessation of demand ts the signal for a recession of prices, hastened by the poor condition of the receipts, 0 that at the present writing the market is dull while prices aro materially lower than they were some time ago. The cable ad- viees have been of a less favorable tenor during the past week than they were during the preceding week, and tho movement hence to Great Britain and Continental Europe has accordingly not been nearly so lively, although ‘the falling off will hardly be shown by tho cli ees from the Custom House, as o large proportion of the amoung cleared was sold last woek. Tho week, taken as @ whole, has certainly tended in favor of buyers, although, with re- duced limits, the inducements te ship freely bas 1s been as great as they were during the previous fow weeks, The “ups and downs" of provisions have been about as conspicuous and about agtrequont as during the Inst week. yet she dif, ference in values of the hog product at the present writing ascompared with those current ® week ago is not great ‘Tho dry goods market has remained provokingly quiet, yet a¢ all the large auction wales it hax beon demonstrated that there is @ point beyond which the trade will not permit to fall, urchases of both cotton and woollen Ribries have charnatortued ail the large auctions of lave and the avidity with which the various offerings bave been taken has oceasioned no little remark.
