MURDER AND SUICIDE. 4 HUSBAND SHOOTS HIS WIFE AND THEN KILLS HIMSELF IN GREENPOINT. Greenpoint was thrilled with horror yesterday even- ing by the rapidly circulated rumor that a murder bad been perpetrated, and that the murderer bad then com- mitied suicide. The tale grew by repetition until the excitement for a time fully equalled that of the finding of Simmons’ head, but tne lack ot mystery in the lat- ter case led to Its quick subsidence, It retains, how- ever, the staple subject of conversation with the crowds at tho street corners aud on the sidewalks, The facts are as follows:— Michael Downey, a carpenter by trade, aged fifty Years, but who has been working of late as a cotton sampler, owns the cosey little cottage No. 204 Greene Street, im which he has resided with bis wife Sarah, aged thirty-eight years, and three children, George, aged seventeen years, Mary, aged nine years, and Sarab, aged six years. With the exception of occa- sional quarrels when Michael bad been drinking the family lived very happily together until within « few months, when the frequency of the quarrels in- creased with Michael's habits of drinking. Yesterday the children went on the picnic of st. Anthony's Roman Catholic church, marching in procession with their classmates, Michael saw them and it incensed him Yo that going home fie abused his wite for allowing them to do it, threatening to shoot both her and him- well. Mrs, Downey becoming iudiguant, left the house and remained at the residence of a neighbor named Wilham O'Rourke for three hours, In the meantime Downey had obtained some more liquor and was half razed, When his wife returned at half-past four P. i. be met her atthe front door and began abusing ter, calling her a common drunkard, accusing her of infidelity and other offences, until at last, growing more excited as he proceeded, he pashed her off the front stoop to the sidewalk meld ipvapee afier her. When abe recovered her footing she turned toward him, and at the same instant be drew a pistol from his pocket and fired at her, the ball piercing ber neck under the left jaw, aud, passing in, lodged in or near the spine. She fell at once to the sidew: Mr. O'Rourke and others rushing to ber assistance as ber husband ran up the stoop and jnato the house, securing the iront door bebind him. Officer Tenicre responded immediately to the alarm that was roised, as did Officer McKillop, and they were on the spota minute or two after the unfortunate Woman Was shot and just in time to hear another pistol report from within the house, They then forced An entrance, and as the neighbors conveyed the in- jured woman in, they proceeded in their search for Downey, whom they found dead on a bed m the back room up stairs, ho baving shot himself through the heart with the same weapon he bad used on his wife, He had placed the pist 1—a single barrel breech- loader—so close to his breast when he tired that the powder scorched his shirt. Doctors Wheeler and Jeokins bad responded to the calls for assistance which had been made during the few moments the search and removal occupied, and devoted their attention to the tnjured woman, whom they pronounced seriously hurt, though the wound was not necessarily fatal. Everythiag that rould be done {or ber was done by the ne}; will render assistance as long aa it i Scene on the return of the children a harrowing one, the tragedy overwhelming them with grief, though for the sike of their mother they restrained excessive demonstrations in her presence. Coroner Nolan was notified of Downey’s death, and will commence the in- quest to-day, OBITUARY BIGHT BEV. AUGUSTIN VEROT, D. D. About this time he assumed control of the Chambers. A PEDLER BRAINED. HIS HEAD CHOPPED OPEN WITH A HATCHET. [From the Fort Scott (Kan.) Monitor, June 11.) Word was brought to the city yesterday morning by N. Rockwell, a farmer living ten miles northwest of Fort Scott, on the Mapleton road, that a murder had been committed near Blair’s blacksmith shop, about seven miles.from the city. Dr. Garwood, the coroner, was notified, and together with Sheriff Gumm, Con- stable Allen and Deputy Sherif Hulbert, started for the scene of the murder. On reaching the place a man between thirty-five and forty years of age was found lyiug on the ground, near a wagon, with bis bead cut open and brains scattered around on the grass. Appearances indicated that he must have bled pro- fusely, as there were two large pools of blood where the body la: P. Copes, J. Copes, R. Osburn, J. C. Hanna, N. Rock- well and John Bishop were selected as a coroner's jury and Jobn Bishop, Dr. Barlow, Joho Allen and J. B. Veith, partner of the murdered man, were the wit- esses examined, The facts elicited were substantially as lollows:— J. B. Veith and Celestine Desprey left Leavenworth for Buxter Springs a few days since in a Wagon drawn by a span of mules, the outfit belonging to Desprey. A kiud of partuersbip existed between them in the vusi- ness of peddiing harness oil and emery stones. Night before last they camped about one mile from Blair's shop and half a mile from tne Mapleton road, It is an out of the way place, and not such a one us is usually chosen for the purpose by persons who depend on beighboring larmers for their supplies, About four o'clock yesterday morning Veith started. for Mr, Bilau’s resideuce after food tor him- self and partner (30 = he states). On arriving, be noticed his ules running across the prairie, and remarked to Mr. Blair thut something Inust be wrong, and started after them, going by the wagon. He followed the mules four or five miles to Mr. Bishop's, where he announced that his partner bad been killed, aud stated that the mules must have kicked bim to death, A hatchet covered with blood and two cans of har- nes8 oil were found about sixty yards from the wagon, where they had evidently been thrown by the person who perpetrated the deed. On Veith’s puntaicons there were three bloody finger marks, where he had wiped his band. His explanation of this was that Le hau moved Desprey’s body, blood on his hands. Tho general impression of those present was that Veith had killed his partner, but for what purpose it could not be surmised, as no money was found on his person. There is another side to the case. Sheriff! Gumm re- turned from the country nignt before last, and when about one mile from the blacksmith shop and several rods from the road he observed two men lying in the grass and two pomies near them, They both had a bottle of whiskey, and for some reason were trying to hide, but on discovering that they were observed the fellows got up aud ‘took suthin’.’" Other parties also having seen the same two persons, and Veith says he and his partner met them, and that Desprey felt uneasy and loaded bis revolver to be in readiness should any demonstration be made, The Coroner's jury returned a verdict that Celestine res ges is ang to his death by a hatchet belonging to |. B. Veith.” ‘The body of the murdered man was brought to this city yesterday ovening and leit with 8. O, Guodlander, undertaker, for interment, Veith was ucrested and taken belure Judge Cheney for prehminary examina- tion, which was postponed until Tuesday. In the meantime he will board at the county hotel. W. J. Bawden js attorney for the prisoner. DIED. SavLes,—Berraa, eldest daughter of Henry L, and Nellie V.
