Iv POLITICAL CONVENTIONS, DELAWARE DEMOCRATS. ENTHUSIASTIC INDORSEMENT OF SENAFOR BAY- A4RD FOR THE PRESIDENCY AND A VIGOROUS ARRAIGNMENT OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. Dover, Del., June 13, 1876. The Democratic State Convention met here to-day. A full representation of delegates irom the three counties of the State was present, Caucuses were held by the three delegations previous to the assembling of ‘the Convention, that of Newcastle county, in which Wilmington is situated, being of so long dura tion, on accouut of a contest, a8 {to con- Biderably delay the meeting of the general body. ‘The struggle in Wilmington was between the friends ot Mayor Whittley and John O'Byrne, two leading poll- ticiaus, as to who should be delegated to the St, Louis Convention. ’Byrno was defeated, Robert G. Reynolds, Chairman of the State Committee, called the Convention to order and nominated Thomas EB. Ricords, of Sussex, as temporary chairman, who was chosen. A committee on YERMANENT ORGANIZATION having been appointed they reported the nomination for Fresident of the Convention of J. Alexander Ful- jon and a pumber of Vice Presidents and Becretarion, In his «pooch upon taking the hair Mr. Fulton spoke of the flagrant cor- ruption which now prevails in our government. Heo regretted the fact that of late it is not an assur ance of good character to finda man in public office. It was not so in the olden times, and It was one of the objects of this convention to bring back in this mem- prable and suggestive year, the primitive condition of bur government, He pointed with pride to the record vf Deleware. For fourteen yeurs since she had been under democratic control, they challenged investiga- tion into the character of their public officers Not one cent bad ever teen lost by a defaulter, It was therefore appropriate that Deleware shoula urge reform, In closing the chairman urged SENATOR BAYARD as a candidato for the Presidency without mentioning him by name, The Committee on Credentials reported against the admission of five delegates from the New Hundred of Blackbird, reducing the number of dele. Fates for Newcastle county to fifty-five and the same as the other counties, A long two hours’ debate ensued, The matter was tinally settled by allowing sixty to each sounty hereafter. The Committee on Resolutions then reported the following :-— THE RESOLUTIONS. ‘The democratic party of Deluware, strong in its ancient faith and loys! to the principles of tree government upon which the Union was founded, declare— First— imitation of power e {anchor of our iustitutions on whien the safesy uf th future depends Second now in States, tion an bralized go be viewed with ularm and should be met with the rebuking ballot of w free people. That the people ot Delaware recognize with leasuve the eminent public services of Senator Bayurd; that in all public trasts he has been 8 duty, and bis public and private blemish. "We therefore declare that he is our us choice for the Presivency of the United States. ‘That the delegates to the dem:cratic Couven- tod to cast the vete of Delaware for him and blo meats to secure his nomination . ME, TALBOT NOMINATED FOR GOVERNOR— STRONG RESOLUTIONS URGING TILDEN FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION. Bancor, June 30, 1873, The Democratic State Convention was called to order this morning by E. F. Mr, Madigan delivered a briet address, which was greeted with applause, all the delegates rising to their feet. General Anderson was called for and briefly addressed the Convention on the corruptions of the day, arraigning the republican party forthe same. The temporary organization was Inade permanent and 706 delegates were reported. The country delegations then consulted und reported a State Committee, a Committee on Resolutions and one Vice president from each county, ‘The Convention reassembled at ten minutes past two P.M. A ballot was ken, which resulted in the choice of Samuel J, Anderson, Samuel Wall, Frank W. Hall and SD. Leavitt as delegates at Jarge ‘to the St. Louis Convention. On @ ballot being taken for Governor Joho C, Talbot received $11 votes of the 453 cast, and his nominauioa was nade unanimous, Hampden Fairteld, John Varney, Edward Wilson and Darius Alden were chosen alternates at large. Lhe resolutions call jor govermental reform by intro- ducing economy in the public service, striking down every abuse of power, and by the honest administration of the public aflairs, lightening the public burdens and restoring peaco and national prosperity, The services of the de tuting investigations, &e are commended, ‘The inflation of the national currency fs opposed. The jourth resolution declares Samuel J. Tilden, the able, zealous, intrepid reform Governor of the Empire State to Le the first choice ut the Convention tor Presi- dent of the United States, and bis nominauion by the Navonal Convention is recommended as eminently tit d proper. The uth resolution deciares that it is the sense of the Sonvention that the rule adopted by the late democratic conventions requiring two third delegates to concur in making t at Variance with the well established principles of jority control, should be abandoned. he Cauvention adjourned sine die. ARKANSAS DEMOCRATS. Lirrix Rock, June 13, 1876. Most of the delegates to the Demvcratic Stute Con- fention, which mects here to-morrow, have already ar- rived. The canvass in the interest of the various candi- datos for United States Senator, who is to be olected in the Legislature next week, is being very actively car- ried on, but as far as can be judged the situation is‘not materially changed, There are certain rumors regard- img the candidacy of Hon. Onslow Stearns, one of which ts that be contemplates withdrawing fis name ride ani Fhomae Fs pen nt coun drow Ube eogtaeh Ua I authoritatively denied. AMUSEMENTS, GILMORE’S GARDEN. This beautiful garden, which has now become one of the choicest summer resorts in New York, and which | was once a Roman Hippodrome, bas tor the first time this summer regained its pristine glory. Offenbach and Boullard have giyen place to Gilmore and bis band. Offenbach was not exactly at home im the garden. One hundred musicians, three-fourths of whom were booked for Baireuth’ and swore by Wagner, were rather too much for the Franco-German in- ventor of the diablerie of opéra bouffe. Next, opéra dbouffe was clevated to an undue degreo of importance, in an orebestral point of view, whieh the public readily realized, Tho advent of Max Maretuek, the most popular of all operatic managers, and a thorough adept in all the ‘ways that are dark and tricks that are vain’ of the average orchestra was a change for the better. Max infused new vitality into the garden concerts, Gilmore came back on Saturday Light with his big military band, which he bas now brought to a standard of discipline not only higher than anything heretofore known in this country, but little lees than the organizations known in Europe, as Les Gaides, of Brussels; La Garde Republicaine, of Paris, and the Hungarian band of the Emperor of Ausiria, ‘The band ts better than ever, It muy be 1n- teresting to musicians to know the component parts of this band, ‘They are as follows :—Two piccolos, two F flutes, two D goncert flutes, one A fees clarinet, two i fat clarinets, fourteen first I flat clarinets, six second B fat clarinets, four third clarinets, four fourth 'B flat clarinets, hes saxophones, four fagotti, four obol, two alto clarionete, one bass clarionet. This comprises the family of reeds and other wood instruments in Gil- more’s band. The brasses consist of one E flat cornet, two firs: B flat cornets, two second B flat cornets, two F flat trumpets of the most improved kind, two fluegel horns, six French horns, three alto horns, two B flat tenor horns, two baritone B flat horns, four trombones, five bass tubus and a small army of instruments of percussion, Over 100 musicians twake up this band. Gilmore has succeeded in reducing this museal force into perfect shape, Last night his programme was an ambitious and a varied ove, extend ng ail the way trom Smith up to Verdi, Arbuckle and Levy played cornet solos, Levy comes back to New York with an embouchure ununpaired and with a cornet delivery more briliiant and more effective than ever. The triple encores seemed to,be more emphatic on the part of the audience and more deserved on the part of the renowned artist than a year ago. Arbuckle was also welcomed back with a degree of enthusiasm that was worthy of such an accomplished and painstaking artist. The house was very large and very select, The magnificent display of the Horticultural Society was an additional feature in the garden. P. 8, Gilmore and his band have revived the éclat and brilliant fortunes of Gilmore’s Garden as 1t was known last summer, DINNER TO CHEMISTS. A dinner isto be given under the auspices of the American Chemical Society to the foreign chemists connected with the Centennial Exhibition, It will tako place in Philadelphia at the Union League Club house on Friday, the 16th inst, SUICIDE OF A DRUG CLERK. Mrs, Lina Gerhardt testified:—I am the wife of de- ceased, and reside on Cortlandt avenue, between 156th and 157th streets; my husband was a drug clerk, and ‘until the 1st of last January was employed as travelling | clerk by Lozel, Marsh & Gardner, of Gold street; sinco ‘that time he bas been out of work and unable to earn any money, although he tried hard, On Monday night at nine o’clock he called me and said that he had taken morphine and wanted to bid me goodby, Iran for Dr. ‘Zengre, on Cortlandt avenue, who soon arrived and gave him an emotic; several physicians treated him till he died, which was attwo o’ciock this afternoon; I know of no other reason for my husband having taken tho poison than that he could not bear the thought of be- ing unable to support me and tho children. Dr. Cushman testified that he made a post mortem Xumination and that death, in his opinion, was caused by an overdose of acetate of morphine. ‘The jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death from morphine administered by himself while laboring under a temporary aberration of mind.
