—__—_-—_—— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Irregular, Unsettled and Tnactive—After a Sharp Rise Prices Lower. GOLD § AT 112 5-8. DY Money on Call 3 and 3 1-2 Per Cent—Foreign Rxchange Quiet—Dulness on the Government and Railway Bond Market—Invest- ment Shares Steady. ‘Watt Steger. } ‘raurspay, June i—6 P, M. We believe there is no law upon the statute books ‘Against self-slaughter, and consequently the great rail- oad corporations are left to commit suicide to their hearts’ content, and this they are doing most effecta- ally, for today a farther cutting down in passenger rates is reported, which, however satisfactory to the public gunerally, will befar from pleasant to stock- holders. Nevertneloss, there is a marked resistance to a farther depression in prices, in spite of tho railroad war and the unfavorable reports as to Mr. Vanderoill’s condition, which bears out the opinion previously ex- Pressed in columns that the ebb tide in financial matters bad about reached low water mark. There Is certainly not much to invite speculation upon the bull side, but there is less to invite it upon the other, and even a fair steadiness in the matter of prices; would, under the circumstances, be a gain. Lake Shore, Western Union and St, Paal preferred Were the stocks chiefly conspicuous to-day for their ‘Aetivity, and they were equally notable for their pro- gress or the road to higher prices during the early hours of business. Later on, when the usual midday torpor settled on the market, prices. dritted off tuto smaller figures, and these prevailed to the end. Of course, Pacific Mail, as usual, was an exception to the rule. The steady pace upward which it has been keep- Ing for a day or two back was abandoned this morn- Ing for a gallop down hill. The ground was coy- ered pretty rapidly, too, for it required bat a few min- ates to break the opening price of 27% down tw 26. Alter this followed a rally of nearly one per cent, with a decline at the close to 26%. Un- doubtedly a very considerable lot of tho stock was purchased for the simple purpose of ousting Gould and his kindred harpies out of the direction, and, this having been achieved, there is a disposition to market tho shares at the high price now ruling—a price that has grown out of an anticipated contested election, rather than from any increase of values. ‘The moderate demand for money was met with sup- plies at 3 a 33¢ per cont, and stocks, for borrowing pur- poses, were to be had at from 1 to 3 per cent paid for carrying. If the loan market is a fair means of judg- ing it would appear that the short interest has been sensibly reduced, and that the long side of the market is, for the time being, the favorite one, ‘THE SALES TO-DAY. Yesterday at one o'clock an important adjourned meeting ot the Pacific Mail Board of Directors wag held at the office of the Panama Railroad Company, No. 7 Nassau street. A consultation was held with Mr, Trenor W. Park, President of the Panama Railroad, which lasted until half past three, The directors wishod (o ascertain all about the business of the Pa- cic Mail Steamship Company, to have an exact under- standing with Mr. Park as to.its future relations with the railroad, and to devise ways *and means to meet the present and accruing liabilities of the company. Mr. Park met the directors in a cordial spirit, and assured them that as fur as himself and associates were concerned the utmost should be done to promote harmony between the interests lately so conflicting. A long discussion was indulged in as to the condition of the company. This will doubt. less form tho basis of an official report soon to be made. An executive committee was formed composed of the following gentlemen:—Charles G Francklyn, 8. C. Thompson, C. H. Mount and Andrew Boardman. Committees were appointed, first, to audit the accounts; second, to audit and adjust old claima; third, to settle accounts between the Pacific Mail and Panama companies, and, fourth, to provide ways and means to settle all the present liabilities of the com- pany. A resolution was then adopted to.close the old books and open an entirely new set, dating from June 1, which rahall show tho current transactions and business of the steamship pomapeny. under the new Board, as entirety distinct from that of the former management Provision, it 18 sald, was also made for mecting presen’ pressing iabilities and to re-estabiish its credit. The different committces agreed to meet to-morrow, ut the same place, to enter upon their duties, and the Board adjourned to meet on Saturday, at noon, to receive the roport of the ccmmittees and to take such furtner action as may be decmed necessary. After the moeting Mr. Park told a H&RAup reporter that no difference would be made in the running of the steamers of the Panama Transit Company on account of the new and harmonious relations with Pacitic Mail; the latter company would despatch three steamers monthly until August, when one steamer per week would be despatched. He thought necessarily there would be many changes in Pacific Mail service; the di- rectors were determined to cut down expenses to the lowest point consistent with the proper iususgamaes of the company. There were many places ing three employés where only one was required. As to rely tions With the Pacific railroads he had no doubt har- monious arrangements would be consummated ; in fi it was to the advantage of the railrouds to Mx jast an proper rates. Good steamship men were now in eom tro] of the line, and if they could not make it pay ona business basis ibe public would soon kaow it, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, LAST MEETING OF THE SEASON—REPORT OP THE COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL COIMe AGE. Ruggles, Chairman of the Committee on International Coinage, reported that tho resolutions adopted at the last meeting of the Chamber, duly authenticated, had been transmitted to the President and both houses of Congress early in May, but that there was good reason to believe that no decisive legis- lative action would be takon in tho matter before the close of the pending Presidential canvass, The Chairman farther stated that there was the greater reason for acquiescing in the delay in view of the necessity of a thorough examination of the meas- ure, which might largely affect the public securities and general welfare of tho United States. Asa further reason he presented to the Chamber an official news: paper of Franco, stating that the: vital question of the | single standard of gold or the double standard of gold and silver was now pending in the Senate of the Frenct Republic, presented by the project of a law, proposes onthe one hand by the Minister of Finance, ands counter proje ubmitted to the Senste by the divtin- guished lead ih monetary reiorm, M de Parten, Jormer sfinister of State and now a Senator of France, iu the discussion of whith much interesting informa- tou would be elicited, impor:ant to be considered in the United States on ‘the discussion of the question in Congresa, The counter project of M. do Parien pro- poses to discontinue the coinage of the five fran preces of nine-tenths ine.
